As a partner I will say starbucks would make a lot more money if they had free wi fi

In Mexico, there is free, unlimited WiFi for customers in every Starbucks. Needless to say, their stores are always packed with students and other people with laptops. Yes, WiFi is much cheaper in Mexico, but if they offered that everywhere, they'd see immediate results.

Kathyk: I like your idea of canceling online access at home and just using Starbucks. I wonder about privacy issues though. Hmmmm...

At Panera, Wi-Fi is totally free with no time limit, no cards, no accounts to sign up to, and nothing to buy. Even better, Panera looks better, coffee is cheaper and tastes better!
