Oh by the way our national defense runs on oil. Ethanol is a key bridge to other alternative fuels that can be domestically produced, employing Americans all the way thruough the process. What you will wind up with in a few years is more choice for consumers who have converted their fleets with the new kits installed having their choice at the pumps for the best and cheapest refined product at the pump. Big oil adn the terrorists want only oil products availabe. We want choice, the American way. If you can chose Ethanol 85, Methanol 85 , Butanol 85 or oil with all the sulphur and oilfins deposits , I feel the choice is clear. Competition. Tax credits for converting cars to be flexfuel compatble. The author of the above article might as well be wearing a turban since he is not seeing this transitional technoolgy as our saviour from foreign oil. We have a big problem and America has solutions.

Check your owners manual. Ethanol (or any alcohol) rots rubber and its synthetic look alikes. Take a look at that big tube that leads from your filler on the transom, down to the gas tank. No eathanol, not even 10 %, not even 5 % is meant to go there. We still go boating, same as you, but aware of the risk of catastrophic fire more than ever. Keep your lifejackets handy, (not stowed.) Please inspect these rubber lines, (the little ones too). I/O owners please run that bilge fan like never before. Go to the louver where it the fan exhausts and take a whiff. before you turn the key. and thank George Bush Jr. and a republican congress for putting your loved ones in danger. Please do not try to save the boat in the event. Get your loved ones in the water and away. The fire will go out by itself when it burns down to the water line. God helps those who help themselves.

Switch grass has much better growing, processing and fuel yield characteristics than corn. Granted any fuel process will have some negative carbon foot print, but processing the switch grass ethanol close to existing oil fields then use the new technique of pumping post processing gases from the ethanol back into the earth of existing oil well which will hold, trap and can maximize old oil field lives by as much as 25% or more. New technique being practice to date., but only with traditional crude oil post processing by product gases(carbon dioxide) being pump 100's of miles back to the oil field to pressurize the well's and cause extra oil to be captured and the greenhouse gas is stored under ground and not in the atmosphere. Long term effects are not yet known with this new technique.

Combustion engines will eventually need to replaced completed but realistically until the masses can afford this type of replacement and suitable ethanol based fuel should be the short to mid term solution, just re-think the source of the ethanol fuel ( use--SWITCH GRASS). the benefits are proven with use in Brazil. Switch grass is easy to grow, doesn't deplete the soil, yields more actual fuel per % of energy needed to process and create the fuel.

Infrastructure oil capability has been flagged by "rich/greedy" Oil Companies for years.. they must be forced to invest in the new Ethanol processing infrastructure with their recent wind fall record profits. University of Tennessee has reported excellent results from recent harvest and fuel processing.

Don use Corn. It's a food source and is too costly and bad carbon foot print.

Going green or more environmentally friendly is all I am trying to advocate not any personal agenda. The rich seem to be getting richer and the poorer are getting poorer.

Peace- Out

Recent studies show that in a permaculturally designed mixed-crop alcohol fuel production system, the amount of greenhouse gases removed from the atmosphere by plants—and then exuded by plant roots into the soil as sugar—can be 13 times what is emitted by processing the crops and burning the alcohol in our cars. All the money that we give to oil exporters can be kept in this country so we don't bankrupt our future even more. We can make alcohol right out of grass clippings, and if we use corn, the part that is left over is even better animal feed because starch is taken out, starch produses gas in animals which is a bigger source of greenhouse gasses in the world than emissions from vehicles.

I only became aware of the Ethanol in my Gas, this month. I tracked down when it was introduced here in NY and it was the same time period when my car's MPG dropped by 3. It has remained lower to this day. But there is no way to get %100 Gasoline where I live, upsate NY. Still confused here?

That source of power came from the crude and coal that is embedded under the deep oceans and in the deep [cavernous?] areas of the earth. Throughout the passage of time mankind comes along with his twisted mind and starts robbing the earth of its power source and thereby creates humongous problems not only for the inhabitants but also the stability of the earth itself. Now they are talking about alternative sources of power (like burning corn or sugar cane or other vegetation) but at the same time they are still robbing the earth of its power source which is creating all the problems like so-called "sunamis" and "earth-quakes" and the likes thereof that claim numerous lives (and then idiots and others say that it's natural or it's GOD' work). Is it not time enough that our so-called "brilliant scientists" turn to 'Pure Sun Power' instead of creating still more problems with burning plants (especially food plants like precious corn and cane) to create more problems for the earth and all the inhabitants? Personally, I believe that we are all screwed...
