If you look at most of the post offices today there are fewer clerks at the counter. People retire and they don't replace them.

Reading all the comments about the postal service is very disheartening. It seems like those wanting the Postal Service to fail and close down have all the answers, but in all reality has no idea how the postal service is structured to handle the HUGE volume of mail that goes through its establishments each day. Sure UPS and Fed-x probably has a better track record of deliveries. It does not handle letters and the number of "small" items that the postal service does and yes there will be some missed deliveries I’m sure. Does UPS and Fed-x go door-to-door like the postal service or handle the number of items each day that a carrier does? And did you know that the postal service picks up the slack that UPS and Fed-x can’t deliver? The junk mail that is delivered is not the work of the postal service, but independent business using the services of the postal service. So why point fingers at the postal service for your mal you receive? It’s up to you to contact the people you’re getting your mail from to stop it! Most of you probably have a 9 to 5 job and weekends off. Well let me tell you what I have observed from the employees of the Postal Service. They work 6 days a week “Every Week” with split shifts going to work in the mornings and then coming back in the afternoons and most not even getting a full 40 hrs. a week, but expected to do a full weeks work in less than 40 hrs. They work all Holidays to assure you have your mail after you return from your Holiday trip! If you think it’s such a great idea to close the Postal Service maybe you should take time to re-evaluate and see what business will close if the postal service is no longer around to deliver that junk mail you so described like the Cards you get on different occasions or a stores ads that draw in customers each week or the magazines you receive from your prescriptions and the bills you get from your Dr. Office, Utilities, or a family member letters from Iraq or Afghanistan. I could go on and on, but what’s the use because those of you wanting the postal service to close might already have the answers!! OH! I forgot to say I’m a contractor with the postal service and I have seen how the postal service handles, sorts, and distributes the volume of mail each day while at the same time manages to get you your mail in a timely manner and maybe a mistake here and there, but you handle as much as they do and see how perfect you can be!! I commend the postal service for what they do.

I hear people complain when their mail is not delivered on time! Let me see you get a package delivered via email. I don't think grandma's present fits in a phone cord. How about original signed documents across country by the next day? The postal service does more volume than all the other delivery services combined. Get rid of half of the bloated management level, and deliver mail four days a week to eliminate some fuel costs. That is the answer.

The service has gotten worse with time. Many years ago regular mail could take up to five day for delivery, in the worst case. My impression is that they are delaying the delivery of regular mail so people chose Priority instead. To my understanding that is the wrong approach. They must give a better service and prove that their service is reliable. Otherwise people will go with UPS or FedEx.

If that happens the postal service as we all know it will cease to exist.Their way of thinking is I am going to get mine and screw everybody else. Here is a suggestion tell them or somebody in congress to eliminate the dead weight at the top statring with the Post Master General just a figure head really serves no pupose as I see it.Next eliminate the board of governors that set the price of things, they are just trying to get what they think they deserve, trying to keep up with their counter parts in the private sector.and finally I think they only need on supervisor or {PostMaster} for three or four offices make them a floater or trouble shooter for that area.
