If you want to shop where the discount offerred has absolutely NO limitations and be able to find top quality at a great price shop Kohls! They have a yes we can attitude towards both the customer and their sales staff

the closed stores are duplicate stores that were aquired when they bought May Co. Why they bought May is beyond me. As one retail expert said" they bought the Titanic. The Macys CEO should be thown out and fired, for his stupid buy.

I too am buying more at Walmart and Target & Ross, but with Macys restructuring

they should survive, but again these store closings are not due to loss of business,

just not needed locations of former May stores, and there could be a need for more of them to go next year...we will see.

The issue when reading this article has far more to do with the analyst expectations that are, or are not being met.

Should a company post a gain but not meet analyst expectations they still fail, and investors, banks and consumers show no confidence.

What is also very wrong with the retail structure is that companies expand without developing a strong financial plan. They take on investors, acrue debt and grow planning on paying back with new sales and investors. Sounds like a a similar scheme that Madoff guy is going for.. Growth at any cost is not smart, becoming beholden to shareholders is not smart.

Perhaps the deaths of many of these chain stores isn't such a bad thing. Smaller regionally based companies may be able to take the places of these behemoths. Remember Tjmaxx wont survive, they buy seasonal ends no big stores no seasonal ends.

Remember to support your local stores, buy regionally and pay for what you expect.

If you want to look at the system that creates a large part of this feeding frenzy, look at Wallstreet itself. Selling options in your company to raise capital places most companies into a place where they consistantly react and are not able to plan long term because results are being demanded immediately, Again to meet an analyst's expectations and thus the public expectations.

All discounts are marked up and then down. Retail mark-up is horrendous.

Now getting to the real issue, when Macy's came to Denver and bought out Foley's that was a sad day. Merchandise is inferior, certain designers were taken away and it is just not the same. Leave Macy's in NYC and San Francisco where it belongs. Some shoes look like Payless items and prices are really inflated. I do not shop at Macy's even when I could afford it, can't shop anywhere since I lost my job and this economy.

Macy's VS Discounts? No way, I dont feel there is a discount in an item where the sticker reads "60% Discount" PLUS 10% at the register and the final price is 24.99 after the discount, I am talking about any item in the store specifically a denim shirt from levi's found by me at (same item) TJ Max for 14.99, the if that is the case what was the original price at Macy's then?55.99? Oppps, what a discount, they probably inflate the original prices before it was to clearance.

Worked for Macy*s 5 years. The first 3.5 were an outstanding experiance, mostly because of my fellow workers. They were tireless and proud, however when Macy*s accuired Foleys here in Texas, this all came to a halt. The Foleys people were horrible, they lied, would not work, took credit for others work to keep thier jobs. Slowly they mannaged to run all of the original Macy*s people out;(some with many years servitude) The service is at best abnoxiuos if not down right poor.One would think Foleys bough Macy*s, if not why did not Macy*s protect thier loyal but gone workers? Who cares seems to be the norm for everything now days.

Macys is so much better than Kohls. Did you ever get service at a Kohls?

Tj Maxx and Marshalls buy the clearance that Macys and other major retailers

couldn't sell off their 80% off racks and then mark it back up. Coupons have ruined the retailers, it is the only way to get the cheap skates into the stores and

they still aren't happy. I worked in retail for 32 yrs and everybody wants it for

nothing, thats why they can't hire enough help.

Big box retailers still do not have a clue...Look at BKE, AROW, and other small retailers. Still showing profit in 2008...The problem isn't the price it's the service! My thoughts, put down the merchandising photos and help people. It is that easy...Go retail...

The store in Mansfield Ohio is a joke! They moved from one end of the mall to another (when they merged with Maycompany) and they chose the older, outdated store! It is so dark and dingy I feel like I am shopping in Goodwill instead of a Macys! And in this store there is so much in the mature ladies section (sag harbour, etc) and really nothing in the 20-30 age group for business wear, etc. I used to find wonderful things on the clearance racks but why bother when you can't see what you are purchasing. Then their coupons have so many stipulations why bother? I'd rather just shop online....
