But, at least in the case of eggs, it looks like producers are conspiring to jack up prices . Egg prices were up nearly 30% last year, while overall food prices rose just 4%,

re: Why egg prices are a shell game

Who would tell the President not to use private modification companies? The banks, that's who… who else? I've come to understand that the banks do not want private loan modification companies helping consumers obtain loan modifications. Why? Because they'd much prefer to deal with homeowners who are not experts in mortgage terms, are distressed as a result of being at risk of losing their homes, and as a result are much easier to take advantage of, simple as that. Us Mortgage Mod , LLC of Philadelphia is 100% reliable and honest. 1-866-859-8764 or usmortgagemod.com. US Mortgage Mod expects to modify over 1,000 mortgages this year and of course, they will charge a fee for their work, but since all of their customers that I spoke with personally didn't mind paying that fee in the least ,then I'm thinking it should be okay.

He was very pointed and seems to know more than he says about the egg producers animal welfare programs. Lets just turn all the chickens loose and see what eggs will cost consumers. Eggs were 50-60 cents a dozen thru the 30-40's and we know what the dollar will buy today. Poultry has held the line in the sand far too long. I am a egg farmer and know this for a fact. We can not feed the world organically. We can only supply the high priced specialty eggs to the few who can afford them-maybe 2% of the world population. Now this is what the vegans are going for. Did you ever stop and think what will happen to the farm animals if HSUS gets their way and we become a vegan society. There will be no farm animals under their program. Literally billions of animals will cease to exist and then the HSUS will have no cause. They better be careful what they wish for.

Production costs, which you so cavalierly dismissed, are THE main reason for the rise in prices. I don't know much about the egg industry, but I know firsthand about beef. A year ago last November, corn was at around $5 per hundred. Thanks to speculators, and the word Ethanol, corn rose to $14. At the same time fuel, meds, supplies, repairs, and the rest of the commodity market spiraled up. As a result, along with droughts here and floods there, the cow herd in the US has diminished because nobody can afford to feed 'em.

If you want to write a factual article about the egg industry, I suggest you work on an egg farm for six months so you can observe firsthand the amount of blood, sweat, tears, and capital required to make a living.

Hasn't the US government been all in a dither (and even increased import tariffs) when foreign producers do the same thing into the US market?

Who's minding the store? Oh wait, I know. No one in the Bush administration.

Your article is another fine example of sensationalist journalism, filled with only half the story. You seem to have conveniently ommitted, or didn't bother to research and learn, that in the 2 years or so prior the period in which you note the egg price rise, egg farmers in this country were selling their eggs at significantly below the cost of the production. Most of the bloggers responding seem to have selective memory of how cheap eggs were throughout 2006 and a big portion of 2007. And if you want to report on the reduction of laying hens due to cage size, please point your journalistic gun at HSUS and PETA, who want to do away with cages altogether. Do you think you could manage to report on what that would do to egg prices. I'm no lover of UEP's market influencing export sales, but their cage size program is only in response to the much larger threat posed by these to extremist animal rights organizations. So in the future, a little more balance would be in order.
