Nearly one-fifth of U.S. homes don't have a home phone line. The residents are exclusively using cellphones. A big incentive to drop the home phone is savings. My neighbor has a electric problem and they cut my phone line and Verizon told us it wourldn't be fixed until 9/18. That is 13 days without a phone, and they could care less. Thank GOD for our cell phones.

Recently I canceled my cell phone contract and bought a Tracfone which is saving me about $40 per month, and I'm still making the same amount of calls; that's a total saving of $70 per month that's going towards my emergency fund. Tracfone gives me long distance and international calls to about 60 country's for the same rate as a local call and text messages are only 5 cents each - that's really cheap. There are no hidden costs and no roaming fees or daily charges so I only pay for my calls. My handset has a great camera and it does everything I need so why would I want to stay at home to wait for a call when I can get it anywhere while I'm doing whatever I want.

I had a attempted break in and I had a cellular back-up for the system.

The police caught the thiefs.

All my neighbors now have ADT.

One of our friends had an alarm installed by some kids and their home was vandalized and the system didnt work.

They tried to sue.

We cancelled our home phone last month and now only use the cellular connection to ADT.

Then I was "conned" into getting one by all the hype and advertising. But my life is no different really. It is just another way for the telephone companies to put another siphon into my wallet. I mean honestly, who really needs a cell phone? I'm not the president or the governor calling to stay an execution. A plain old telephone line (no bell or whistles) is all you need. An answering machine at best (one time cost). Don't be conned. Don't carry a GPS. And certainly don't pay for the "privilege" of supporting big business just because. This is an example of why many people have money problems. They get caught up in keeping up with the Jones’s, run out of money and then keep borrowing from the future. It is a house of cards waiting to fall. By the way, I no longer have a cell phone and enjoy the quiet. (People still know how to reach me.)

Voice mail, call forwarding, etc. are the real money pits. It is better to have an answering machine at best (one time expense) instead of all the add-ons. I lived most of my life without a cell phone, then got one, and used it all the time. It was a neat toy, but definitely not a necessity. I am now cell phone free and loving it again. Let's not kid ourselves folks. Cell phones are not necessary.

There could be an installation charge as you might need new equipment and an increase in your monthly fee between $5-10 a month but you could ditch your monthly phone bill.
