It seems like anyone with a business plan and some initiative could get a business loan. The problem is you need more than any business plan. Atmosphere and culinary arts have little to do with restaurant suuccess. Just because a guy with a fake college degree in business can hook up with a chef with a fake degree in culinary arts and a fake degree in marketing can convince a loan officer with a fake degree in financing to loan them money from a n institution that has fake stability, restaurants were born. I was in the restaurant business for 30 years. It's too tough for me to risk my families future in, so now I'm out and I do miss it. It takes 3 things to make a go of it in restaurants and always has. Value, location and sound business practice. This means making the tough decisionslike NOT keeping all your staff levels up when things are slow. It's a matter of survival. Find creative ways to help them when hours are hard to come by, do whatever, but if your costs do not follow your gross downward, in the restaurant industry you will eventually fail. How long it takes depends on how much you are willing to lose.

It's getting ridiculous trying to get in for breakfast or dinner lately. There was a period when people were staying home, but in the past month or so, the restaurants are thriving. One opened recently, and I thought.. "uh oh, bad idea." Well, you can't get near that place at dinner time.. So perhaps corporate chains are going out of business because they aren't bringing in the profits to the shareholders, but around here... the locals and the regional restaurant chains are doing great. The smart businesses know that bailing out and cutting your workforce because your PROFITS drop, is suicide. Instead, the smaller chains and single businesses are willing to operate with less profit, while keeping their biz model and staff intact, and just ride things out.

Be very observant when you read about layoffs lately. They are cutting back to save profit. You know, profit.. the thing that you hope to have after paying all the bills and salaries and taxes.
