OK, beer nation. You commented, and I read every word.

In my post earlier this week regarding the testing of "beer in a box," I offended many by stating that "all beer tastes the same." I could not have been more erroneous.

All beer does not taste the same. I repeat: All beer does not taste the same.

I would have been much better served making my point by specifying that the big-name beers made by the large brewers taste the same -- and they do, as far as I am concerned. My mistake was suggesting that microbrews and varietals taste the same.

They do not, and for those words I was wrong and rightly chastised by the MSN community. For my penance, I am now hosting my own "Beer Summit" in an attempt to win back the graces of beer nation.   Read More...

BeerImagine kicking back in the shade on a hot day and popping open an ice-cold box of beer.

Yes, you read that right: box.

The Wall Street Journal reports to that MillerCoors is testing beer in a box in several cities.

Now, like many people during this economic crisis, my wife and I are doing some personal belt-tightening of our own in order to save money. But there are some things I just won't do, including buying wine in a box.

Now, with beer, the box might be less objectionable since, in my opinion, the quality issue is not really in play. Despite what the microbrewers will tell you, all beer is pretty much the same. Consumers who pay a premium do so more for the experience than the taste.

But for me, the issue is the bottle. I like drinking my suds from a cold bottle. Period.   Read More...

Shares of Molson Coors (TAP) were up over $1.70 or 4.5% to $38.45 yesterday, and its options have traded at 4 times the average daily volume. A good portion of that was in the June $40 call, which saw 2,019 contracts trade at the $1.25 asking price.

Prior open interest in the strike was 2089 contract; this was an opening sale. It appears to be tied to stock  as part of buy-write. The sale pushed IV down 10 percentage point s on the day, even as the company’s earnings are slated for release next Tuesday, May 5.

The David in publicly traded brewers, Sam Adams (SAM), also saw a pop in its share price, up some 1.20 or 4% yesterday and over 16% over the past 3 trading days. But its options lack any fizz. There was a big purchase of calls back in late March which is proving to be well-bought; no notable volume has occurred in the past 3 weeks.   Read More...

There is plenty of fun in store for this week. The markets have not been taking kindly to missed earnings these days, so why not get right down to some of the ideas you should be looking at as potential opportunities to make a few bucks.

    Monday, August 4

If you are looking for a complete disaster, consider the fundamental and technical’s for Nam Tai Electronics. Earnings have been slowing considerably over the last several quarters and sporting a P/E ratio of 12 against an annual growth rate of -3% doesn’t provide much incentive to purchase shares. Add to that the fact that volume has been spiking on share declines and it is no wonder that the trend has been negative. Even though the technology sector has been somewhat stable throughout this recent market fiasco, there’s always an exception. Analysts are looking for $.17 per share of profit on $140 million of revenue.   Read More...
