Sony takes top spot in video games

Price cuts work. In September, Sony’s (SNE) PlayStation 3 outsold the Microsoft (MSFT) Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii for the first time in recent memory.

Industry research firm NPD said that the video game industry, which includes both consoles and games, had sales of $1.28 billion in September, up 1% from a year ago.

Sony shipped 491,800 PS3 units in September, moving ahead of Nintendo’s Wii which shipped 462,800 units, and Microsoft’s Xbox 360 which dropped to third place with 352,600 units shipped.

Microsoft and Sony both cut the prices of most of their consoles by $100 in August. That helped sales of the PS3 move up by more than 100%  from September 2008.

Sales of consoles are higher, but are profits?

The component costs for video game consoles have probably dropped over the last year, and certainly have dropped since the current generation of players was introduced.

But the price wars among the three major companies in the industry look eerily similar to the e-book price wars among Amazon (AMZN), Wal-Mart (WMT), and Best Buy (BBY). Price discounts may help drive up holiday sales, but the concept of losing money on every sale and making it up on volume by definition never works.

It will not be long before investors know how much price cuts have hurt the bottom lines at the three companies because they are all publicly traded. Shareholders won’t be happy if revenues for gaming move up sharply but margins fall apart.

Comparing video game systems to ebooks is not a valid reference.  Console makers make most of their money on software and liscensing fees.  Selling more consoles makes people buy more games.  Lowering the price of the system deosn't necessarily hurt.

do your research

people by PS3 only for blueray not games

This was expected.  Sony dropped the price to $299 and rolled out the "It only does everything" ad campaign and ... tada!!!  When you look at it these numbers are highly influenced by the fact that the Sony unit plays Blu Ray Disc.  With the price for a low end Sony Blu Ray player around $170 it seems like a little extra gets you a whole lot more with the console.  These next gen systems for the most part play all the same games.  Only a small handful of games are released exclusively for each console.  Its like getting the higher end version of the Blu Ray player with the added bonus of playing video games.  The only setback is that if you own Playstation 2 games Sony has removed the ability to play those games on the Playstation 3.  I will always believe that to be a terrible move by Sony.  They are purly hurting only themselves by doing that.  I don't own a Playstation 3 yet.  I still believe that the days of a $250 or even $200 are coming down the line.  With the units ability to freely upgrade the hard drive storage you would be a fool not to buy the least expensive unit and upgrade it.

Ps3 doesnt play PS2 games?  Obviously you do not own a PS3.  Whata ridiculous thing to say.  It also plays Ps1 games.  Know what you are talking about before you talk about it.

Jerry, check the specs of the patest PS3's. They no longer have backwards compatability. They have also removed other features also. BC isn't quite as important now that there are moany ps3 games out now. When I got my 60GB a few months after launch there weren't many games yet and the BC was a good feature. Though, there was only a couple PS2 games I ever played on it and dont play any of them any more.

Taking BC out isnt new either. They have had models without it for quite a while now. They have to make them cheaper somehow.
