Do we need a doggy tax break?

Kim's catAnimal care can be outrageously expensive. I've probably spent enough money on my cat's ailing kidneys to buy a small car.

Should the government be helping out? One Republican congressman thinks so, and has introduced a bill that allows pet owners to deduct the cost of animal care from their taxes.

The bill would let you deduct as much as $3,500 a year, according to NPR.

Rep. Thaddeus McCotter of Michigan said he's heard that economic hard times are causing some people to give up their pets.

"When you think about the relationship between people and pets and the humane way that it helps people think, it seemed to me to be a good idea," McCotter said in a video about the bill, according to NPR.

Some pet owners are thrilled at the idea. But it seems to me that if you choose to have a pet, you should be able to pay for it.

Julie DelCour, a columnist at Tulsa World, summed up the issue nicely: "We have a $11 trillion national debt; and 46 million people without health insurance," she writes. "With those realities, Congress can ill afford to pass out tax deductions like Milk Bones. This novelty bill will die in committee and McCotter's 15 minutes of pandering to us animal owners will end."

How about give me tax deduction for SELF CARE. I will show you all the movie

tickets and fancy restaurant bills.

Take this stupidity and multiply it by the biggest number you can imagine.  THAT'S how we end up with unsustainable debt. Now ask yourself - do you believe in the dollar as a good long term investment?

People will collect pets for the tax deduction.  Much like so many welfare families that keep popping out the kids for more welfare money.  As the owner of 3 dogs and 8 cats I would love to be able to "claim" my critters but I don't see it happening and if it did....it would be abused.

If Obama and his cronies are going to force those of us that still have jobs to provide health coverage for ILLEGAL (read criminal) ALIENS then why shouldn't we get a tax break for our LEGAL pets???!!!

Ok so if you choose to have a pet you should be able to pay for it right? Well same rule should apply to all those that receive government money for children they have and dont work...So if you choose to do what it takes to make a baby then have and keep the baby you SHOULD be able to pay for the baby?? Why cant we hold ourselves to that rule when it comes to paying for the broods of kids people have and the tax breaks they receive but working the minimum if at all? I see no difference

I believe that everyone should have affordable healthcare in this country before we start allowing deductions for out pets.  I have both a dog & cat and I give them whatever they need and believe that all humans deserve healthcare regardless of income.

Here is a shout out to all the politiations with better healthcare than everyone else "Figure it OUT"...

I agree with Roger....but I would like to know if it is $3500.00 per pet...I am getting good ideas....

This bill is insane.  I feel if you want to have a pet pay for it yourself - no tax deductions.

Unbelievable.  I can not even believe that any congressman or woman would even think this up.

I HOPE THERE ARE ENOUGH NORMAL PEOPLE WITH AN I.Q. OF30 OR ABOVE TO GET THIS MORON OUT OF OFFICE
