Starbucks beats McDonald's in coffee wars

McDonald’s (MCD) was supposed to crush Starbucks (SBUX) in the premium coffee business when the world’s largest restaurant chain introduced a line of premium java more than a year ago.

It turns out that McDonald’s impressive start as competition to Starbucks, Dunkin’ Donuts, and other specialty coffee retailers has begun to flag.

New research shows the momentum in terms of store traffic patterns has turned in Starbucks’ direction and it is likely that the trend will continue.

New research done in September by ChangeWave shows that those surveyed were 5% more likely to buy coffee from Starbucks in the upcoming 90 days than in the 90 days just past. The figure for McDonald’s was down 3%. Starbucks almost made gains in the previous survey. The research confirms what Wall St. has suspected that the coffee store chain is doing well. Its shares are over $20, near a 52-week high and up from a period low of $7.06.

In the restaurant category, the companies that can expect an improvement in traffic, according to ChangeWave, are Olive Garden (DRI), Chipotle (CMG), and Red Lobster. Denny’s and Morton’s are likely to do more poorly.

Looking at trends across the industry, ChangeWave reports better than one-in-ten respondents (11%) now say they will spend more money at restaurants going forward. That represents a 1 point improvement over August. Another 36% say they will be spending less, also 1 point better than before.

The only coffee that I liked was French Vanilla Cappachino (spelling?).  But after a month of the machine being broken I became use to not having it.  Now I enjoy the extra cash in my pocket.  There other speciality drinks really don't taste good and there is no comparing Starbucks Mocha Frappachino (spelling?).

Starbucks has a better atmostphere for going on an evening "date" with your husband.

No Amout of Starbucks Coffee Can Make Me Really Awake. Yawn...

Frankly Mcdonalds nor Starbucks coffee taste good. I usually can't finish a cup of either. Some out local shops have much better blends. I guess if you like burnt or stale coffee then  those two will work.

The problem that mcdonalds needs to address is that I find their food disgusting and NO amount of clever advertising or monopoly games is going to get me in one of their "restaurants".  At Starbucks I can almost always expect pleasant baristas who generally remember my order from one visit to the next. At mcdonalds I can almost always expect rude employees who do not want to be there...

McDonald's cannot compete with Starbucks because their products are not consistent from store to store.  The taste is totally different because the employees have not been trained on how to properly make the coffee and coffee products.

Give me McDonald's any day!

Starbucks is NASTY and over priced. People buy thinking they are keeping up with the Joneses. Dunkin or fresh roasted Guatemalen from a beanery is the BEST. F the Jonses!

Tried McDonald's and threw it out! YUK! it was awful!  Give me Starbucks any day!  I am willing to pay a little more-at least I will drink it!

The corporation McDonalds wants to sell lots of coffee.

The employees of McDonalds don't seem very happy to serve it.

Customers paying several dollars for a cup of coffee deserve good service by people who want to be there.

Good luck McDonalds.

MCDONALDS SUCKS. No matter if you deal with their food or coffie.
