GM tries to pitch Camaro to gay men

The videos, broadcast on YouTube, use sex appeal to sell Camaros to guys. Only the models aren't women, they're men.

The racy commercials are part of a new advertising campaign targeting gay, bisexual and transgender Americans.

In addition to highlighting the Camaro, the online videos illuminate a new challenge for General Motors and rival Chrysler: marketing the same car model to different audiences.

Before the current restructuring, the car companies had enough models to make "a car for every purse and purpose," as long-time GM-president Alfred P. Sloan famously said. But not anymore. GM once had 11 brands, including international ones. It plans to shed or spin-off at least four. That means instead of having several cars for soccer moms in various income brackets and several other cars aimed at, say, young, childless men, the car companies must market the same car to both groups.

"We are trying to broaden the appeal," said John Fitzpatrick, marketing manager for the Camaro.

The Camaro, for example, is a model that GM hopes to market as an affordable muscle car for the masses. GM is using the new Transformers movie - a film about machines that turn into robots based on a popular comic book - to market the sports car to young people and hip parents. The company is also marketing the car in the Middle East with a message focused on performance and power, says Fitzpatrick. The car will eventually need to be sold in Europe as well, a very different market that tends to prize features such as fuel-efficiency.

In the U.S., GM has tacitly supported online campaigns by homosexual Camaro fans. The YouTube videos were created by a Camaro enthusiast to promote "Gay Day at the Movies," a Los Angeles event featuring a screening of the new Transformers movie. Chevrolet supplied the vehicle used in the video, said company spokesman Adam Denison.

Fitzpatrick acknowledges that appealing to so many different groups with the same car is challenging. The Internet has enabled folks in different countries to see advertising campaigns intended for different audiences.

"It is a lot more difficult to do in today's day and age because of what the Internet can do," said Fitzpatrick, adding that focusing on the technology has helped broaden the Camaro's appeal.

So far, GM is pleased with how the Camaro campaigns are going. The 2010 model, which hit dealerships in April, has sold the most vehicles in its class, said Fitzpatrick. More than 9,000 Camaros were sold in June and GM is working to fill orders for another 25,000 vehicles.

You guys are totally buying into a publicity stunt.  AND IT'S TOTALLY WORKING!!!

What the CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I hope they do realize that 90% of all muscle car owners are Heterosexual!!!! That's the biggest bunch of crap I have ever heard of! I will not be buying anymore G-overment M-otor cars! This is the future of America "Land of the free" unless it offends some poor sole!!! Then we have to adjust 303,824,639 people because it made one person mad. That is thinking right there... Way to go Obama! (Loser)

Yo Bob, I drive a Camaro and I'm not a redneck Pentecostal.  I'm from Ohio, and a member of the Episcopal Church.  I am actually against the whole evangelical fundamental Christian movement to.  CYA!

G_Lo, it's not hypocritical.  Straight men are attracted to women.  As a straight man, if you put a half naked man in front of me, draped over a car in a "sexy" pose, I'm going to look away.  I'm not gay, I don't want to see that.

I wasn't going to buy a GM product anyway, but this is another good reason to keep my distance from their dealerships.  That and more ammo to make fun of GM owners with.

What a bunch of intolerent redneck comments!!!  So they market to gays..so what....I saw a commercial once and it had BLACK people in it  OMG!!!!!  Seems like the STUPID REDNECK SLACKJAWS are the ones upset!!!! TOO BAD for GM since rednecks were the only people WHO bought Camaros!!!

They should try the cute little nodding/bopping rats angle. Oh no. Sorry, that one is taken already.  I guess Gerbils would be considered copying the rat gimick?

Michael, then you have something in common with gay women

The 2009 Cumaro!

Why am I so not surprised that this brings out all the right wingnut redneck backwater haters, whom I STILL cannot understand have enough basic intelligence to operate something as "complicated" as the "internets"

Be who you are, but when you start trying to act like being hetero is somehow superior, you've gone way, WAY too far.

I don't care who produced it, it's the best idea ever.  Normally I'd never consider such a car, but now I might just jump right on it!  Anyone selling wares with models or physical appeal should be 50/50 male female.  Period.

Meanwhile, don't worry your pretty little testosterone-deficient heads, boys:  I don't know why I'm so nice, but despite your sometimes outward behavior I won't tell your secret or turn you away when the sun goes down and you answer my Craigslist ad and show up at my door all horned up because you're so busy keeping up outdated appearances the rest of the day.

You may have heard of the "real" unemployment rate, but there's also a "real" percentage of gays and bis that is far higher than you'll ever know involving people you would never imagine.  Trust me, you have friends that are doing it.

What genius thought this one up.  They pander to maybe 5% of the male population and risk alienating the other 95%.  Way to go Obama moters.  What's for the encore?  reintroducing the Yugo?
