True unemployment rate already at 20%

Really, how hard is it to find a job? Was June's horrid numbers, in which 467,000 people lost their jobs compared to 345,000 in May, a one-time fluke? Or does it mean that all those Wall Street economists who believe the economic recovery is starting are dead wrong?

Not to scare you, but the situation is actually worse than it seems. Over the years, the government has changed the way it counts the unemployed. An example of this is the criticized Birth-Death Model which was added in 2000. The model is designed to account for the birth and death of businesses and the resultant lag in survey data. Unfortunately, the model doesn't work that well during economic contractions (like we have now) and consistently overstates the number of jobs being created each month.

John Williams of Shadow Government Statistics specializes in removing these questionable tweaks to the government's statistical data to better align current numbers with the methodology used to gather historical data. After reviewing the data, Williams believes that "the June jobs loss likely exceeded 700,000." David Rosenberg of Gluskin Sheff notes that the fall in the number of hours worked in June (to a record low of 33 per week) is equivalent to a loss of more than 800,000 jobs.

There are similar issues with the way the unemployment rate is measured. The headline rate only jumped from 9.4% to 9.5% because of a drop in the number of people in the workforce. The more inclusive "U-6" measure of unemployment, which includes discouraged workers, jumped from 16.4% to 16.5%. But even this doesn't adequately capture the situation on the ground: Back in the Clinton Administration, the definition of discouraged worker was changed to only include those that had given up looking for work because there were no jobs to be had within the last year.

By adding these folks back in, William's SGS-Alternate Unemployment Measure rose to a jaw-dropping 20.6%. Separately, the Center for Labor Market Studies in Boston puts U.S. unemployment at 18.2%. Any way you cut the numbers, the situation is very bad. According to David Rosenberg, one-in-three among the unemployed have been looking for a job for more than six months and still can't find one.

This brings us to another issue: expiring unemployment benefits. Continuing unemployment claims fell 53,000 to 6.7 million last week, but Deutsche Bank's chief U.S. economist Joseph LaVorgna wonders how much of this decline is due people exhausting their standard 26-week benefit. He says: "We are concerned about what will happen when a significant share of out-of-work individuals' benefits completely expire, because this could lead consumer spending to re-weaken, hence jeopardizing a fragile recovery."

Unless the economy starts getting traction here in the third quarter, we could face a situation where people find that they have no job and no unemployment benefits. For these people, 2009 will feel an awful lot like 1932. As a result, spending cuts will be deep and dramatic.

My positions

The ongoing job losses will continue to weigh on the retail sector -- which was one of the best performing groups coming out of the March low. I've added short positions in Target (TGT), Macy's (M), and Office Depot (ODP) to my portfolio. Besides penny-pinching consumers, retailers face a federal minimum wage increase as well as a tough back-to-school and holiday shopping season.

Dave... U are halarious! Obama has had six months and the Bush administration had 8 years. Give Obama a break he is doing what he needs to do.

bubba you need a government lesson - foreign affairs is for the Secretary of State to " run around the world ".  that be Hillary, the one who should have been President.

There are jobs out there. Just not jobs people feel like doing. I work in the wireless industry and we are always hiring. Pay is great however for some reason people feel retail is too demeaning for them.

So, why don't you quite your job right now and test the theory for us.

"Change, we need."  Where I live, foreclosures are among the highest as a percentage of home ownership in the entire US.  Also, we are among the highest in percentage drop in property values over the past 2 years in the US.  As for unemployment, we've set a record high for our area going back to when they first started keeping records.  We're in uncharted territory now.  Find a job here? Nope.  Go somewhere else.  Waste of time and energy.  So, now, we're going to improve things with a hike in mimimum wage, unionizing the tellers and back office workers of Bank of America, starting a nationalized health care program with mandatory participation at the pain of paying fines, cap and trade (boy, will THAT help at the gas pump and with the utility bills), horribly intolerably low interest rates on CDs and bank accounts, and on and on.  Way to go!!  Don't worry, you won't have a worry in the world when we finally become a Marxist Socialist country - the government will take care of you, no problem.  If we wipe out private property rights by nationalizing banks/industrial companies/insurance companies/ownership of real estate, confiscate cash and investment portfolios, and restrict travel to within our borders, that'll take care of the national debt.  "Change, we need."  Wake up America!

This was an excellent article.  Hit the nail on the head!  I speak with the general public every day of the week.  From white collar workers with degrees.  To general laborers.  So many of them have no jobs, and cannot find one.  And most of them see no relief in sight.  I also feel that this is just the begining.  Unfortunately we have a very long way to go yet.  And the government just tells us lie after lie.  The government treats all of us like we are brainless.  Wake up and smell the coffee.  Better stock up on some food stuff.  As that may be all many of us will have left.

So no jobs, and no benefits, what people supposed to do for money? They are still going to need to eat, and try and have a house to live in come winter. But don't worry everyone, we are all going to be saved by the Obama-nation! Because when he passes the cap and trade, and government healthcare we will all have jobs making solar panels or building windmills, while the US government takes personal care of us..........We are all doomed.....

sickofdeadcelebs - here in Pennsylvania we pay an unemployment compensation tax, on top of the SSI deduction. A few years back,  we had an EMS tax that started out at 26.00 or 52.00 depending on what the municipality wanted. Now there talking about raising those to 150.00 + dollars per year. I'm not working for minimum wage , but I cannot afford anymore taxes. Between my wife and I we are close to $95,000.00 per year income, have a small mortgage and no credit card debt, and are still having trouble saving. Absolutely no discretionary spending, just the necessities. Now Spendell wants to raise the income tax when everyone else wants the sales tax raised so everybody participates.Yeah, unemployment is going to get worse before it gets better at least until incomes go up or commodities go down because most people are strapped.

Hey Sundevil stop stop being so ignorant and stereotyping Mexicans . Welfare is collected by an array of illegal immigrants not just Mexicans. Of course you classify mexicans as every hispanic person. My  father worked hi @#$ here in the U.S to give my sisters and I a future. He never collected welfare while working three jobs. So NO not all MEXICANS collect welfare. It is insulting that you call yourself American.

Obama's a joke, soon there will be NO ECONOMY, its a biblical thing.

So, why don't you quite your job right now and test the theory for us.

I'm assuming your one of those that cannot find work.

I suggest going back to school and retaking English class before you persue any new career.
