Is Slim Jim an endangered species?

Get ready for a summer Slim Jim shortage. The New York Post reports that Slim Jim fans may be hoarding the processed meat product, and it soon could be disappearing from store shelves.

An explosion last month destroyed the only Slim Jim plant in the U.S., the Post reports. And the company that makes Slim Jims, ConAgra (CAG), hasn't produced any since then and won't do so for at least another month.

Industry analysts say that Slim Jim loyalty is very high, and that people aren't going to be OK with substitutes if the real thing is gone. That's why some fans may be hoarding the remaining supply.

Analysts tell the Post that ConAgra could produce as many as 500 million Slim Jims every year. ConAgra said it won't return to full Slim Jim production until the fall.

"The sooner, the better," writes the Post. "Yesterday one convenience store in Midtown Manhattan was still selling foot-long Slim Jims that expired in February."

A group of ConAgra workers who were injured in the accident are suing the company and two contractors, the Associated Press reports.

Is there no God?  First the recession, then our Slim Jims.  Expect total mayhem as seemingly normal people come to grips w/ this crises.  Obama will have to do something.

LOL this is news???

What a shame that millions of fat Americans can't buy their "poison sticks" now. How about an apple or something natural you sickos.

If there wasn't a shortage, there will be one now.  Wag the dog.

come on, look at the good news... how many other american made products are in such demand? maybe slim jim can start the ball rolling for a demand of other american products. they aren't the heatlhiest to eat but they are a tradition that every baby boomer can relate to.

Ya'll best STF-up. We need our SJ's. Eat that tofu what's made from chemicals. We want MEAT. Seeing as how I et 6 packs ever day, just to stay healthy, I already gone to the 7-11 and bought every box they had. It's in the freezer so I can keep it fresh. Ruthie & Wayne, you need to eat some real food and not that processed crap you eat.

My Grandson, deployed to Iraq, requests a supply of Slim-Jims with each mailed package.  He shares with fellow soldiers, and they greatly appreciate the gesture.  As for Mr. Dennis' comment, my grandson is neither a fat American nor a sicko.  He eats apples, but does enjoy Slim-Jims.

People actually buy those??? I thought Slim Jims were like the hard boiled eggs in the jar of vinegar that no one in their right mind would ever eat!! I agree with Wayne, sickos!!!!!!!!!!!

Why didn't they tell us this when the explosion occurred.  Now I'm a month behind in hoarding.

Good post, Really Chapped, but our media thinks otherwise.

Every notice that every successful American business gets trampled?  Microsoft, pharmaceuticals, Tobacco, McDonalds...you name it.  If it's successful, the media will call it "greedy" or "profit hungry".

It's like people don't understand that successful businesses are necessary.  They don't get that profit is GOOD and is the goal of business.

All hail Slim Jim.
