US Airways raises checked-bag fee

US Airways (LCC) is upping its fees for checked bags -- again. And this time it's a bit more confusing.

Starting in July, the airline wants travelers to prepay checked bag fees online when checking in. If you do that, you'll pay $15 for the first bag and $25 for the second.

If you don't prepay online, it'll cost you a $5 "service fee." When you get to the airport, checking in bags will cost $20 for the first bag and $30 for the second. So, if you don't have a computer -- or can't access one -- get ready to pay.

The airline told employees the new fee was part of a broader move to more self-service features, which will save it time and money, according to The Arizona Republic. Only one quarter of US Airways' passengers currently use online check-in.

Remember, this is the airline that tried to charge customers $2 for sodas and coffee. Seven months later, it reversed the policy and returned to giving out those drinks for free.

Alaska Air (ALK) will soon be charging for checked bags as well. The airline announced a $15 checked bag fee starting July 7.

The industry is waiting for Southwest Airlines (LUV) to join the checked-bag-fee crowd, but that doesn't look like it's happening anytime soon. In a recent earnings call, chief executive Gary Kelly said the airline's no-fee policy is boosting demand

When are the airlines going to crack down on the size of carry on bags???  Full-size garment bags jammed full and large duffel bags ARE NOT CARRY ON BAGS!  Also if you carry on a bag, you should be physically capable of putting your own bag in the overhead bin.  If you cannot, you should check it.

We recently flew US Airways and it was a terrible problem with all the carry on bags.   There was not enough overhead space for all the carry-ons as people try to avoid paying the fees.  They ended up checking some of the carry-ons anyway.  We had to make a connecting flight and had a terrible time retriving our bags as they had to be put many rows behind where we were seated due to everyone coming on and putting their bags in the front compartments so they could retrieve them as they got closer to getting off the plane and not having to try to carry them up the aisles.

To Frustrated Traveler, I like most people will try to stuff my carryon bag to the max to avoid having to pay a ridiculous checked bag fee!

To mrd, if you don't like the checked bag fees - fly a different airline that doesn't have a baggage fee or pack lighter!

I too recently flew on US Airways. The baggage situation was horrid.  The over head bins were completly full of oversized bags and I had to put by real carryons under my feet in a middle seat for 2 and a half hours.  I will try to avoid US Airways for any future flights...I reccomend that others do the same..

I'M GETTING READY TO FLY FOR VAC. EVERYDAY THERE IS A NEW PRICE FOR THE SAME DANG TICKET..  WHAT'S UP WITH THAT????  NOW $20 TO CHECK A FLIPPING BAG...  THEY GOT MORE $$$ THAN THE ROCKERFELLA'S..

GIVE THE POOR PEOPLE A BRAKE...
