Guns: A better buy than stocks

Forget stocks and bonds, the real money's in guns.

The Wall Street Journal reports artillery enthusiasts are stocking up on guns and ammo, not necessarily ahead of widespread civil unrest resulting from our ongoing economic swoon, but as an investment. These trigger-happy speculators are betting President Obama will institute a ban on assault rifles, which would crimp supply and send prices, well, shooting up.

For it's part, the Obama administration says it has no plans to enact such legislation and supports the Second Amendment right to bear arms.

During the federal ban on semiautomatic weapons from 1994-2004, prices soared. Recent buying has reached almost a frenzied pitch, creating backlogs for popular models and enabling resellers to list certain guns well above suggested retail prices. AK-47s doubled in price between September 2008 and the end of last year.

Ammo, as well, has become a hot commodity. As one supplier said, "(Ammunition) beats the hell out of money markets and CDs. You can double your investment in ammunition in a year."

Equity investors, too, are betting on Americans arming themselves to the teeth. Smith & Wesson (SWHC), maker of Dirty Harry's weapon of choice -- the .44 Magnum -- has seen its stock jump from around $2 per share to over $6 since Inauguration Day. Still, shares are off around 70% from highs seen as recently as late 2007. Sturm Ruger (RGR), another gun manufacturer, has seen a rise of almost 100% in 2009.

As Minyanville's Kevin Depew is apt to say, "These are heady times we are living in." The Journal running a front-page story on buying guns rather than stocks is indicative of just how strange things have become.

Recent volatility in financial markets is driving Americans to seek alternative ways to protect -- and even grow -- their money. And while we're yet to see widespread construction of bunkers, protective trenches or armed militias patrolling the streets, the country is on edge to an extent not witnessed since September 2001.

I mean, pirates are all over the news, for God's sake. Pirates!

My God, we are becoming dumber and dumber with each passing day!

No wonder most of the world thinks we are a bunch of gunslingers.

Well, you guys were all wrong. Mr. "O" didn't ban them due to border issues. Good try, should have spent your time at the tea party, instead of blogging....

Sounds good to me. I should go buy all the weapons I can so we can start shooting each other. That's what America wants right? A bloodbath in the streets. I guess people think that this is a good way to live. It's just a good way to die. God does not love America anymore and it shows in the morality of its people. I know a gunsmith that can make me an automatic 60 caliper weapon. Hell I can get some grenade launchers from Mexico and then ship then to all of my friends in populated areas. It's not about the gun amendment; white people are just scared, like they've always been. All the rich people think there goin to get away with stealing from the poor. Well poor people know how to shoot too! So let's do this!!!

I WORK FOR A SHERIFF'S OFFICE IN NORTH CAROLINA,I WEAR A GUN TO WORK EVERY DAY, ALL TOO OFTEN THE CRIMINALS ARE NOT THE VICTIMS OF RANDOM GUN CRIMES, IT IS THE ELDERLY OR CHILDREN, LET'S PUT A STOP TO LIBERAL POLITICIANS WHO HAVE ONLY SEEN VIOLENT GUN CRIMES FROM THE COMFORT OF THEIR RECLINER, DISARM THE LAW ABIDING CITIZENS; AND YOU ARM THE CRIMINALS            1

I bought my first gun ever on Nov.5 2008...

The difference between an "assault weapon" and any other firearm would be lost on those girlie-men who don't have a clue as to what they are talking about!  There are absolutely no statistics that support a decrease in crime where firearms are banned, just ask any resident of Washington DC!  In fact, in states where conceal-carry laws prevail, assaults have decreased because afterall, you never know when the GOOD guy might be packing!

Likewise, how many shooting crimes have actually been committed by those with carry permits?  No matter how you cut it, the bad guys will have guns but the good guys take the heat.  The Supreme Court upheld our Right to Bear Arms just last year, our greatest fear and the greatest harm this Guy in Office can do is have the opportunity to appoint a new Supreme Court Judge. Long live Ruth Bader Ginsburg!

Silly liberals. There was NEVER a ban on semi automatic weapons. Hopefully there never will be. I will say it one more time. If guns are outlawed only the outlaws will have guns. Pray that we keep our 2nd amendment rights.

Patriot you are a fool! The real patriots are the gun owning people who through their 2nd ammendment rights will be the ones protecting you from an unjust government and anyone else who dares to tread on american rights. I'll bet you were never in the service or you would not advocate sending anyone to one of our governments unjust or unprovoked wars. This from a Viet Nam Cambat Veteran who fought in one of our governments uncalled for wars that waqs conjured up out of bull and political waste and paid for with the blood of americans whio only wenjt to protect our citizens, mot our government. Sorry to bash ypu but an idiot needs to be told they are an idiot!

You better get your weapons while you can before obama's lying ass passes the martial law in oct.

The right to own guns for self defense was put in the Constitution so that the people could defend themselves and have guns for self defense against their  government...........if you don't believe me, ask those who wrote it......their government was the British!

A new book should be in book retailers all over in a couple weeks called
