Ford's sales still horrible, but improving

Warmer weather could be helping Ford (F) out, as spring thaws bring more people into its dealerships. Ford's March sales were up by a third from February -- a horrific month in which the automaker only sold 99,060 cars.

In March, Ford sold about 131,000 cars and trucks in the U.S. That number still pales to the 222,000 it sold at the same time last year, but at least it's an improvement from February.

Does this mean things are getting better for Ford? Probably not yet. Many consumers -- including commenters on this blog -- say they're still waiting for good deals and price breaks before plunking down for a new car. Consumer spending is still too low to give Ford any peace of mind.

Automakers are trying hard to lure buyers. Their incentive spending is at record levels -- about $3,200 on average for a car, a 30% increase from last year. Ford and other rivals have even agreed to take over monthly car payments for customers who lose their jobs.

Other carmakers report their March sales later today. Stay tuned for the update.

Just went down to buy a new Ford truck.  I own my own busisness and have saved the money to pay cash for a truck.  I asked how they would off set the difference since I would never use their program to pay in the event of a lost job.  I was told there is no incentive to pay cash.  They offered a very small rebate on the truck.  Ford folks better start thinking. I just politely left the dealership and am off to purchase a Duramax diesel from Chev or GMC.  This is a cash deal, I buythe extended warrnty each time.  And they offered the same rebate as they person who they may have to bail out.  They lost the sale on this truck.

Yeah thats great, now theres another chevy truck that my tax money will have to cover the warrnaty on.

In this economy "Cash is King".  Make them compete if they want your business.  The dealer with the  "lowest" drive away price gets the sale. That usualy takes care of all the phoney fee's they want to tack on too.

bob would not have qualified anyway because it does not cover self employed peolpe. enjoy your chevy before it becomes extinct.

yeah, lord forbid they make a profit.

Good luck at the Chevy dealer.  Locally, I see they are advertising a new 1500 pickup for $30,000...........and they wonder why sales are at a historic low!!  It won't be long, and you will be able to purchase a "new" two year old truck!

Never, ever buy a new model year truck,  buy the "New" truck thats one model year old, - skip the depreciation and yes, the dealer needs to make a profit and the salesman has a family to feed

Bob, why didn't you go down to the Chrysler dealer why you were looking for a handout? Now we have businessmen wanting government subsidized trucks.  Also have fun with that government backed extended warranty you bought.

The Stock Research Portal is genuinely perplexed. Does anyone, he asks, “Have a rational answer as to why the US dollar is stronger in the face of the White House’s apparent position vis a vis Chrysler and GM”?

I own a Ford and I will buy another when it is time.
