GM, Chrysler suing taxpayers with taxpayer money

As I recall from my college Greek mythology course, arrogant mortals ultimately learn -- and quite harshly -- the folly of excessive ego. The stories usually end with Zeus smiting with a few choice lightning bolts. Arrogance never escapes punishment from the gods.

For a modern-day example, we can turn to the automakers. They are the mortals; President Obama, the god. Except this is no myth.

Earlier this week, Obama instructed the EPA to reconsider the case of California’s existing proposal to raise fuel-efficiency standards. The automakers have been fighting California and other states in court for several years. Last week, they pledged to continue that fight - despite the president's instructions and, to a larger extent, his consistent and unequivocal insistence on a “green” auto industry. Except, as it stands now, the automakers are basically using their bailout money -- from taxpayers -- to turn around and sue…the taxpayers themselves.

Last month, General Motors (GM) and Chrysler LLC begged the federal government for $14 billion to stay afloat. They got it - and now they're biting the hand that feeds them. As arrogance goes, not even Ovid could have crafted a finer tale. What remains to be seen is how the offended god will respond.

As California’s attorney general, Jerry Brown, pointed out on NPR:

“The irony here is the auto companies want a bailout, in many ways because they weren’t building the kind of cars that were compatible with today’s energy market – and at the same time, they want to keep going with their lawsuits, which have already cost millions and millions of dollars.”

During the Big 3’s testimony before Congress, several politicians asked the executives why it made sense to provide them with money: Wouldn't they just use it to continue fighting old battles. The heads of the Big 3 dodged the question, saying they’d prefer a single national standard. Well, they have now answered Congress's question, and in the affirmative.

“Keep in mind that the money that was given was to 2 manufacturers [GM and Chrysler],” Charles Territo, a spokesman for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers, which is a party to 2 of the lawsuits, told The New Yorker. “And all manufacturers have opposed the standards. Those lawsuits were brought by the entire industry, to protect the longstanding federal law that says that fuel-efficiency standards should be set at the federal level and not by individual states.”

According to The New Yorker, the auto manufacturers have so far lost all the cases that have gone trial.

Mr. Territo and the rest of the industry refuse to see the forest for the trees. Do they actually believe the federal government won’t eventually codify higher emission standards, following California’s lead? Gone are the days when the industry could deny climate change and break promises to voluntarily cut emissions. Waging a public-relations battle against the Obama administration -- especially given the Big 3’s well-documented tone-deafness to public opinion -- is just asking for harsh retribution. Just like in ancient mythology.

So how will Obama enact his revenge? I found one hint from his inaugural speech: “What the cynics fail to understand is that the ground has shifted beneath them - that the stale political arguments that have consumed us for so long, no longer apply.”

The mortals of the Big 3 should watch where they're walking.

I do not support the positions of US automakers and their undoing is of their own devise.  I do not own an American made vehicle and haven't for several years.  However in their defense a state like California is often rediculous in expectations of any industry in their state.

California can't supply themselves with enough power, water or any other resource and currently needs 100 billion dollars in financial aid just to stay afloat.  Year in and year out 50% of all federal aid is spent on California.  They lead the nation in problems they don't know how to fix.

It's time California grew up!

It makes perfect sense to me.  For the last 40 years federal govt in general and CA in particular have been absolutely crushing the big 3 with regulations.  The big 3 is in t his mess largely due to the actions of government.  Every asinine idea that comes out of CA is adopted by liberal democrats and then the rest of us, semi-sane people, get to suffer with their regs.

quote:Do they actually believe the federal government won’t eventually codify higher emission standards, following California’s lead?  end quote.

That's exactly the point.  I don't appreciate CA  telling me what kind of vehicle I can drive.  I don't appreciate the govt telling me what kind of car I can drive and then using CA for an excuse.  If CA is so smart why ar ethey  50 billion in the hole?

this is so preposterous...everybody needs to boycott all gm and chrysler products...they are NOT american made they are all made in mexico....whereas honda, toyota, nissan, bmw, mercedes, hyundai are made in US....GM and Chrysler do not have any innovation, and STILL sell regals and centuries in china...whereas american standards are more stringent, they sell older junkers overseas, so HOW can they complain about having to meet different standards??? when they have had to do this all along JUST NOT HERE IN THIS COUNTRY.... if they force Obama's hand, he will mandate increased fuel efficiency standards everywhere, the SOONER the better, as smaller rural towns and backwards people still have SOV driving an hour each way to work in SUVs and cause asthma, respiratory illness, etc. in children and in neighborhoods....Ban all SUVS which are not for contractors....I am sick and tired of all GM and Chrysler BUllSH*( when two years ago GM CEO Bob Lutz said "global warming is a total crock of SH*()&"...his exact words....this douchebag deserves nothing except a kick in the &*(^

When the country was founded, did they envision some states being 50 times larger by poplulation than others?  Sue CA to break up in to multiple states.  It's too big and inefficient.

And, um, whose money are the states using to fight in court...?

At least the auto manufactures are using  / purchasing American lawyers at no doubt $500.00 per hour on average.  We need bailout packages or lawyers don't you agree!

When is the government going to wake up and stop wasting OUR money?   Answer, When the American people stop re-electing the same A**holes every two and 6 years.

Americans, well we get what the majority wants...incompetent law makers whose only concern is being re-elected to their blush and easy jobs.

The automakers should stop wasting their money fighting these individual states incessant regulation.  Instead they should all just pull out of the market in these states and not sell their product there.  See where that will get these overburdensome states when their citizens have no automobiles to drive.

Unbelievable how smug the idiot that wrote this article is!  If we allow states to regulate monoliths like the car industry, we lose all hope of competing internationally, on any level.  The auto industry is not only supported AND subsidized in every other country on earth with an auto industry, but often in violation of international treaties and especially in violation of the Kyoto standards.  California far exceeds Kyoto in their overreaching but threatens to make Toyota the only car company that will qualify for their standards, in turn destroying Detroit and subsidizing Tokyo.  They have their own subsidies, why would true Americans ever support US government intervention to require the purchase of Japanese cars!!!  Ludicrous!! IDIOTS!!
