Some revered him as a savior long before he set foot in the Oval Office. Now that’s he’s ready for his White House close-up, President Barack Obama is looking to a multi-faceted approach to help resuscitate the American economy.

But the sheer brilliance of the president’s iconography, established over almost 2 years of nationwide campaigning, is already helping to build up certain industries. It’s a fascination that, for better or worse, has created its own unique cottage industry - and is starting to expand far beyond politics.

The fascination with Barack Obama was percolating long before November 4th. But the day after that historic election, the nation’s newspapers experienced a run on print issues not seen in ages.

On the morning of November 5th, people lined up to buy copies of the New York Times. In response, the paper printed 75,000 additional copies, which subsequently sold out; the company then printed an additional 150,000 copies of the November 5th paper to be sold through that weekend and via mail order. Commemorative Obama issues of Time and Newsweek also saw considerable spikes in sales. Sensing an opportunity, the country’s publishers dove headfirst into an Obama business that extended beyond political coverage.

In the weeks following Obama’s election, the Chicago Sun-Times began selling commemorative copies of their November 5th paper on eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY) for $350 a pop. Through the sale of Obama-related merchandise, the New York Times (which has been selling authentic Obama photos and assorted Obamabilia on their website for as much as $1,099] has sold close to $2 million in Obama-related merchandise; the Los Angeles Times has sold close to $1 million.

With Obama items ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous, Madison Avenue has also started deconstructing Obama’s marketing success. Take Pepsi’s (NYSE: PEP) new logo, for example, which drew immediate comparisons to the Obama campaign logo:

Of course, Pepsi's new "Yes You Can" slogan speaks for itself.

And these incredible similarities could just be the beginning: A great deal of attention has been paid to Obama’s official font, Gotham. Originally designed for GQ, Gotham has quickly become branding and marketing’s go-to typeface. Over the life of the Obama campaign, it’s been used by brands ranging from Banana Republic (NYSE:GPS) to Kia Motors to Saks Fifth Avenue (NYSE: SKS) to Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO) to Saturday Night Live.

And with Obama’s old Chrysler retailing for over $100,000 on eBay, there’s no telling how far the new president’s populist appeal may go.

keith, you're exactly right, the situation now is atrocious.  We wars on two fronts while our economy is in shambles.  We print more money like it's monopoly money and knowing down the road that it'll have to be paid back one way or another.  Our government has given over $1 trillion dollars to white collar financial institutions with no accountability whatsoever.  People drive their Toyota's, watch the Superbowl on their Sony's and then take pictures with their Canon Camera's.  When I returned home from Vietnam in 1973 at least we produced something here in the US.  I believe, as FDR did in 1932, that you invest money to produce jobs and hopefully we will again produce products and that's why I like Obama's plan to invest in building and the infrastucture here in America.  I sincerely hope that simply giving away money like we have hasn't forfeited my kids and grandkids future.

your all in for a very rude awakening, obama is completely weak on protecting this country from the next terrorist attack, here is just a few samples of this moron's plan for america, suspend all searches of muslums boarding the planes, that means NO searches will no longer be allowed, he is also going to do away with the ''Patriot Act'' completely, and finally he is going to close gimto and send all the detainee's back to their countries, with NO trial!!!! This sounds like a recipe for disasterfor this country being attacked again, The terrorist must love Obama Now!!!!!! The next four years will be hell, he is no Savior!!!!!

The country is in a real bad shape, just don't forget what is looks like at his defining moment. It took eight years for Bush to get it where it is. Give Barack a chance. he has good intentions and good plans. We all need do our part.

There is only one savior, thats Jesus Christ and I pray he's watching over us because were going to really need him now!!! This guy Obama has never run anything successfully except his mouth.l

Our Country and our Historical founding is being shakened. I think that is time for the american people to look around and understand that we have made the mess and now we as a people have to clean it up. This country was built on Christian morals and we need to get back to them, we need to pray for our elected officals and all those that stand and speak for we the people. I believe that God is in control and we have not cause we ask not, the prayers of a rightous man prevaileth much. Our battle is not against flesh and blood. Stop the bashing and start praying to our true saviour the one that we give all glory jesus christ. It does not matter the state of any president, a king is nothing without a kingdom. If we began to think of our children and the next generation and what we are leaving them, than that alone should be enough to get us out of our selfishness and brings us to begin to pray and teach our children what it seems is tring to be taken away, which is the foundation of Jesus Christ. God changed saul to paul and he can still do that. Our country is in need of alot of things , but the one things it needs the most, is the hope of Glory.

its nice to see that the party that was to bring in change will waste millions of dollars on parties and festivities on the 20th of january. The very first action of our new administration. It proves that BO just doesn't get it. He does not feel the pain of the middle class. It is just more of the same wasteful spending from our elected public officials. One last question to everyone out there: Why is every Us politician wealthy? How can any of them really feel how bad it is out there for the working man and woman when they do not have to worry about any bills. Their biggest worry is what PERK to accept . I'm fed up with all of them (politicians) We need to start fresh and get some people in there with some Real passion for Working for the people.

Jesus Christ people, grow the hell up.  If you want to see his birth certificate, then go to snopes.com.  They have seen and felt his birth certificate.  Obama is your president, and he's going to bring change to this cuontry.  He can't do it alone, so we all must stand united with our president.

Also, this is for you unintelligent ones:

Quit trying to blame the economy and loss of jobs on Obama.  The guy hasn't even placed a shoe in the Oval Office yet.  PLUS:  There's the fact that THE PRESIDENT HAS NO CONTROL OVER THE STOCK MARKET OR JOB LOSSES.  IT'S THE FAULT OF THE COMPANIES FILING FOR BANKRUPTCY.

God, the stupidity on these blogs just amaze me.

I almost allowed myself to become "excited" about having Obama in office and that he was truly for the people....UNTIL....MSN.com's front page blurb, which was about the Obama's new Interior Designer.  Now, Obama is for the people, and we are in the midst of an economic crisis, and we (because I can assure you it is not coming out of Obama's pocket) are footing his decorating bill?  If this were Sarah Palin, she would be inhialated in the press for this.  Just look at her wardrobe fiasco.  Obama says he is going to stop our jobs from going overseas by strengthening our economy, well he is failing his first test.  His "decorator" loves Armani, which is headquartered in Milan, Italy.  I can assure you the Obama's will not be sleeping on 100% cotton sheets made in the USA, as I do.  I would suspect that the majority of what will be decorating the White House will come from the finest manufacturers overseas.  Lets dig a little deeper, press, and find out.

Again, this is in the midst of an unprecedented economic crisis.  I, personally, just received a notice from my credit card holder, Chase bank, who informed me they were issuing an approx. 6 point increase on my interest rate.  This comes a month after the first time we have ever carried a balance on our card, and a couple of months after Chase received 25 billion (wth a b) in bailout money.  Interest rates are at a historic low, AND they have received more than I could ever dream of seeing in bailout money and they are still jacking interest rates.  This economic bailout is a crock, there is no accountability and I don't believe we will be seeing any accountability if we push the next phase through....mark my words....

At the end of the day, sadly, he is like any other politician.  Greedy and excessive.  This is what has led our country down the path we are on, and both reps and dems are to blame.  We can point fingers at whomever we like, but at the end of the day, we suffer.

Agree with DEE on GW who many will second guess all they want but governed with decisiveness, clarity of conscience and a precise moral compass that all Americans ought to have emulated. But the democratic clock in the USA ticks on, the citizenry has just commissioned BO to lead and govern next. He seems to have been blessed with all the requisite tools to succeed. May he also find the fortitude to resist the impending pull of the liberal humanists, hollywood, black ethnocentric cabals, etc. who may be looking for substantive payback as he carefully steers the ship of state. His presidency will one day too be history. The ordinary American can only hope that history books then can unanimously lay down words that will read somewhat like . . . "an American president, unsaddled by a most un-American sounding name, during the second decade of the new millenium,  restored America to . . . sustained, widespread economic prosperity . . . higher moral ground . . . familiar role as respected arbiter of global peace." It is not now nor ever will it be a sin . . . to hope and hold . . . the default position of optimism!
