Obama swag stimulates economy

Some revered him as a savior long before he set foot in the Oval Office. Now that’s he’s ready for his White House close-up, President Barack Obama is looking to a multi-faceted approach to help resuscitate the American economy.

But the sheer brilliance of the president’s iconography, established over almost 2 years of nationwide campaigning, is already helping to build up certain industries. It’s a fascination that, for better or worse, has created its own unique cottage industry - and is starting to expand far beyond politics.

The fascination with Barack Obama was percolating long before November 4th. But the day after that historic election, the nation’s newspapers experienced a run on print issues not seen in ages.

On the morning of November 5th, people lined up to buy copies of the New York Times. In response, the paper printed 75,000 additional copies, which subsequently sold out; the company then printed an additional 150,000 copies of the November 5th paper to be sold through that weekend and via mail order. Commemorative Obama issues of Time and Newsweek also saw considerable spikes in sales. Sensing an opportunity, the country’s publishers dove headfirst into an Obama business that extended beyond political coverage.

In the weeks following Obama’s election, the Chicago Sun-Times began selling commemorative copies of their November 5th paper on eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY) for $350 a pop. Through the sale of Obama-related merchandise, the New York Times (which has been selling authentic Obama photos and assorted Obamabilia on their website for as much as $1,099] has sold close to $2 million in Obama-related merchandise; the Los Angeles Times has sold close to $1 million.

With Obama items ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous, Madison Avenue has also started deconstructing Obama’s marketing success. Take Pepsi’s (NYSE: PEP) new logo, for example, which drew immediate comparisons to the Obama campaign logo:

Of course, Pepsi's new "Yes You Can" slogan speaks for itself.

And these incredible similarities could just be the beginning: A great deal of attention has been paid to Obama’s official font, Gotham. Originally designed for GQ, Gotham has quickly become branding and marketing’s go-to typeface. Over the life of the Obama campaign, it’s been used by brands ranging from Banana Republic (NYSE:GPS) to Kia Motors to Saks Fifth Avenue (NYSE: SKS) to Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO) to Saturday Night Live.

And with Obama’s old Chrysler retailing for over $100,000 on eBay, there’s no telling how far the new president’s populist appeal may go.

Michelle: He made his millions off the backs of those that are still suffering in his district.  He gets paid off by ACORN and people get his slum lord's houses that they couldn't even afford.  What jobs did he create in his district.  Community organizer what a joke he was playing Godfater...

I'm not looking for a savior. I just want someone smart enough to see through the bull and the self interest and self promotion to make the right call at least more than 50% of the time. Smart enough to tell when someone is not getting the job done and to cut through the swagger and call them on it. That's what I want from my President. The ability to see far enough down the road to tell we're headed in the right direction. I want a President who has vision, not a man who sees visions.

Cmptrwzrd, it wasn't Obama who has spent $3 trillion dollars in Iraq chasing those so call WMD.  Bush and his counterparts will go down in history as the worst ever, even his bailout money of $350 billiion was spent with no accounting and now the Repubs in congress are arguing over giving the other $350 billiion to Obama.  what a bunch of hypocritical SOB's.

Whomever wrote this drivel. is in for a rude , rude awakening.  Em, Em, Em;;;;;;;poor thing!

As for the bailout, if the Carter administration had not forced lenders into granting mortgages to people they knew could not afford the mortgages they were getting, we would not be spending 750 billion to bail out the financial industry.

No shortage of idiots in this nation.  That showed  on Nov. 4th.  The idiocy continues to show with the silliness of the inaugural waste of time.  Obama is a savior to no one.  He has no clue what he's doing! He's so dependent on incompetents to lead him around, and a nation of idiots who follow him around drooling.

This Savior is a fraud. Hopefully he'll be nailed to his political cross along with his arrogance and all of the other Chicago felons.

To "SANDI"

Yes...Yes....Yes , others and I WOULD Rather Have A Decent Republican leader, such as President Bush, in office now and in the future....instead of an Unexperienced "rock-star" with a Socialist agenda!!!!!!!!

Listening to far-left media such as Chris-I SPIT WHEN I TALK-Matthews or Rachel-Guess...Am I a Lesbian or not? But aren't I Glib??-Maddow...will mess with a weak-minded person's sense of good/bad...right/wrong, etc...

"WE'RE NEVER FORGET!" ....????....I guess you "forgot"

Is Obama a Savior? from what? Bush-Cherney? May be, but let us be careful how we use it, this whole world has only one Saviour Jesus Christ.

There is so much I'd like to say.   But it's not worth it.  People are only going to believe or see what they want.  Barack could go on to eliminate the deficit left to us in the next two years, and there will still be people downing his every move.  Eight years ago was the first time I voted.  Why?  Because I did NOT want Bush in office.  I felt he was not going to do this country any favors.  He did not disappoint.  Four years ago I voted against him again.  For some reason, the first 4 years wasn't enough damage for some people.  But this time, I didn't vote against someone.  I voted FOR someone.  Someone that I felt would at the very least try to get this country in better shape than it's been in.  Look around people.  Is this the type of country you can be proud of?  I'm sure those of you that are living off your multi-million dollar trust funds are the ones upset.  But for the average person out here, that works hard every day, and just may be worried about their job being around in the next 10, 15, 20 years, we need a change.  If you're one of the millions that have a regular job, bills, and trying to plan for retirement, and you wanted things to stay the same as they've been for the past 8 years, you need to seek psychiatric help.  You gave Bush a chance.  You see where that got you.  Now give Barack a chance.  I want my golden years to be just that.  Golden.  And yes, that was the edited version of what I wanted to say...lol
