Obama swag stimulates economy

Some revered him as a savior long before he set foot in the Oval Office. Now that’s he’s ready for his White House close-up, President Barack Obama is looking to a multi-faceted approach to help resuscitate the American economy.

But the sheer brilliance of the president’s iconography, established over almost 2 years of nationwide campaigning, is already helping to build up certain industries. It’s a fascination that, for better or worse, has created its own unique cottage industry - and is starting to expand far beyond politics.

The fascination with Barack Obama was percolating long before November 4th. But the day after that historic election, the nation’s newspapers experienced a run on print issues not seen in ages.

On the morning of November 5th, people lined up to buy copies of the New York Times. In response, the paper printed 75,000 additional copies, which subsequently sold out; the company then printed an additional 150,000 copies of the November 5th paper to be sold through that weekend and via mail order. Commemorative Obama issues of Time and Newsweek also saw considerable spikes in sales. Sensing an opportunity, the country’s publishers dove headfirst into an Obama business that extended beyond political coverage.

In the weeks following Obama’s election, the Chicago Sun-Times began selling commemorative copies of their November 5th paper on eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY) for $350 a pop. Through the sale of Obama-related merchandise, the New York Times (which has been selling authentic Obama photos and assorted Obamabilia on their website for as much as $1,099] has sold close to $2 million in Obama-related merchandise; the Los Angeles Times has sold close to $1 million.

With Obama items ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous, Madison Avenue has also started deconstructing Obama’s marketing success. Take Pepsi’s (NYSE: PEP) new logo, for example, which drew immediate comparisons to the Obama campaign logo:

Of course, Pepsi's new "Yes You Can" slogan speaks for itself.

And these incredible similarities could just be the beginning: A great deal of attention has been paid to Obama’s official font, Gotham. Originally designed for GQ, Gotham has quickly become branding and marketing’s go-to typeface. Over the life of the Obama campaign, it’s been used by brands ranging from Banana Republic (NYSE:GPS) to Kia Motors to Saks Fifth Avenue (NYSE: SKS) to Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO) to Saturday Night Live.

And with Obama’s old Chrysler retailing for over $100,000 on eBay, there’s no telling how far the new president’s populist appeal may go.

He made promise after promise during the campaign. Once the election was in hand he started to back-pedal on those promises! Doesn't matter though, because he will receive a free pass (at least during his first term). Every failure that he encounters will be thrown back to the Bush Administration. For the sake of the Country, I hope he turns out to be a great President, but I fear that we might have only succumbed to the allure of a silver-tongued devil!

Amazing, this guy isn't even in the oval office yet and a horde of blogs talk about how he isn't this and he isn't that.  I will tell you one thing, this republican president leaving office inherited a $150 billiion dollar surplus from, as called "cigar man", and now leaves a $1.5 trilliion dollar deficit.  Remember, the republicans had the presidency and until two years ago congress.  An 8 year presidency that spent $11.5 trillion dollars so talk to me in 4 years and will see how we stand.

He hasn't done anything yet... SWAG don't you mean BOB and WEAVE...

Why is everyone falling all over him?? He is an impressive con man. Notice his um's disapear when reading speeches compared to answering a simple question.  For example: What is your name; "um my name is um Barak um Husein um Umbama I mean um Obama... Please..  His speach is just as bad as W's....

The nation has been asking for President-Elect Obama to produce a valid copy of his Hawaiian birth certificate which he has yet to do.  If there was nothing to that issue the document would have been brought out as soon as the question hit.

It won't come out until he's sworn in then watch out.  Who do you think may run in 2012.  How about "The Terminator"  as the presidence has been set for a non-citizen to run.

obama would not have gotten elected if bush had not done such a terrible job.republicans did this to them selves.bush chaney predicted that democrats would never control the whtehouse again,ha.tr

Hey Mike, Yes Bush came in with a 150B surplus, but Clinton didn't have 2 major hurricanes to clean up after, 9/11 to clean up after.  There goes the surplus.

What did Clinton do besides perjure himself to the Grand Jury?

I think what many of us forget is people are in awe of him.  They want a reason to believe in something, in someone - the only other option appears to be defeat adn complecency.  Having this support,  gives him a very large advantage over the past few presidents.  He is young, he has a great track record that shows he is there for the people, and I think he deserves the fair  opportunity to show what he can do. Savior, maybe not in the biblical sense, but he definately has a following and with that backing, who knows what can be acheived.

CMPTRWZRD: Didn't you mean perjure on Monica?? Oh wait that was purge...

anyone who reads the good book will understand that in the end times there will be false prophets proclaiming to be the one and only savior but in the  end thereis only one true savior and we all need to get back to the basics and stay with the basics. This country was founded on christianity the presidents based their decisions on what the Lord said. We have voted presidents in that have promoted baby killing and other abominations that the Lord would turn his back on. If we want the Lord to walk with us we need to walk with him. This is only the begining people

Michelle,  I live in Illinois, he was my Senator.  I've seen nothing come from his tenure in the Senate.  Now he's bringing Chicago style politics to the White House with his cabinet choices.
