Obama swag stimulates economy

Some revered him as a savior long before he set foot in the Oval Office. Now that’s he’s ready for his White House close-up, President Barack Obama is looking to a multi-faceted approach to help resuscitate the American economy.

But the sheer brilliance of the president’s iconography, established over almost 2 years of nationwide campaigning, is already helping to build up certain industries. It’s a fascination that, for better or worse, has created its own unique cottage industry - and is starting to expand far beyond politics.

The fascination with Barack Obama was percolating long before November 4th. But the day after that historic election, the nation’s newspapers experienced a run on print issues not seen in ages.

On the morning of November 5th, people lined up to buy copies of the New York Times. In response, the paper printed 75,000 additional copies, which subsequently sold out; the company then printed an additional 150,000 copies of the November 5th paper to be sold through that weekend and via mail order. Commemorative Obama issues of Time and Newsweek also saw considerable spikes in sales. Sensing an opportunity, the country’s publishers dove headfirst into an Obama business that extended beyond political coverage.

In the weeks following Obama’s election, the Chicago Sun-Times began selling commemorative copies of their November 5th paper on eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY) for $350 a pop. Through the sale of Obama-related merchandise, the New York Times (which has been selling authentic Obama photos and assorted Obamabilia on their website for as much as $1,099] has sold close to $2 million in Obama-related merchandise; the Los Angeles Times has sold close to $1 million.

With Obama items ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous, Madison Avenue has also started deconstructing Obama’s marketing success. Take Pepsi’s (NYSE: PEP) new logo, for example, which drew immediate comparisons to the Obama campaign logo:

Of course, Pepsi's new "Yes You Can" slogan speaks for itself.

And these incredible similarities could just be the beginning: A great deal of attention has been paid to Obama’s official font, Gotham. Originally designed for GQ, Gotham has quickly become branding and marketing’s go-to typeface. Over the life of the Obama campaign, it’s been used by brands ranging from Banana Republic (NYSE:GPS) to Kia Motors to Saks Fifth Avenue (NYSE: SKS) to Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO) to Saturday Night Live.

And with Obama’s old Chrysler retailing for over $100,000 on eBay, there’s no telling how far the new president’s populist appeal may go.

This country can't get much worse than Bush has made it. Bush did NOTHING for our economy. He only funded this war, he had to lie about to start. Obama will be a much better president, than Bush ever was. Bush is worthless and we will be glad to see himout. Bush is a disgrace and he ought to be in prison for all the wrong he has done.

If you are a blogger this may be vary good news for you. There is a blog post that speaks directly to this trend in business.

The left wing wimps try to make the whole 8 years of the Bush administration look like a failure.  How many attcacks on US soil since 9/11? Just a  lucky coincidence? It's Bush's fault that the Community Re-investment Act signed by the cigar man finally burst the housing bubble? There's one thing that the media says that is true, America is getting dumber and dumber, and they vote democrat. 4 out of 5 non HS graduates vote democrat. Lebians, homos, felons, and union workers too. What a group.

I was laid off may 2006 after 36 years on the same job...no more unemployment benefits and no jobs...where is help for the people that their unemployment expired???

My daughter was born in the U.S.A. in 1961 and her birth certificate is the origional, it is not a typed out copy as barack obama's is ." IT IS HAND WRITTEN" , We needed a copy of our birth certificates a few years ago so I wrote to N.C. for mine and received a copy that looks exactly like obama's does except for the names and place I was born. back in 1961 all the BIRTH CERTIFICATES WERE HAND WRITTEN, NOT TYPED, so why doesn't obama display his origional birth certificate to the U.S.A., HE KNOWS HE WAS NOT BORN HERE IN THE U.S.A.,

then there would be absolutely no question as to where he was born. people

would respect him for being HONEST,  OPP'S  THAT'  IMPOSSIBLE,  isn't it???????

Being that I live in the state Governed by the Governator himself, Arnold isn't allowed, by law to sell any items with his likeness, as in movies, commercials, or swag after the date he was sworn into office.

How is it that Obama is allowed to do this????

What is everyone doing? Are we all blind??  The big"O" is ruining our country all by his lonesome!!!  He wants NEW health care standards but has NOT produced any plan explaining WHAT!??  I am a retired physician of 40 years of medical service and fought insurance companies as well as HMO services to provide care for my patients... It was exhausting!!! "O" hasn't a single iota of understanding what is necessary to give good care to all of us...including illegals...What the heck!, we are only here for 60-80 years so why not get along??!  What is going to happen when the Red Martians invade us!???  I bet Bush will be blamed for them,, too!!
