Obama swag stimulates economy

Some revered him as a savior long before he set foot in the Oval Office. Now that’s he’s ready for his White House close-up, President Barack Obama is looking to a multi-faceted approach to help resuscitate the American economy.

But the sheer brilliance of the president’s iconography, established over almost 2 years of nationwide campaigning, is already helping to build up certain industries. It’s a fascination that, for better or worse, has created its own unique cottage industry - and is starting to expand far beyond politics.

The fascination with Barack Obama was percolating long before November 4th. But the day after that historic election, the nation’s newspapers experienced a run on print issues not seen in ages.

On the morning of November 5th, people lined up to buy copies of the New York Times. In response, the paper printed 75,000 additional copies, which subsequently sold out; the company then printed an additional 150,000 copies of the November 5th paper to be sold through that weekend and via mail order. Commemorative Obama issues of Time and Newsweek also saw considerable spikes in sales. Sensing an opportunity, the country’s publishers dove headfirst into an Obama business that extended beyond political coverage.

In the weeks following Obama’s election, the Chicago Sun-Times began selling commemorative copies of their November 5th paper on eBay (Nasdaq: EBAY) for $350 a pop. Through the sale of Obama-related merchandise, the New York Times (which has been selling authentic Obama photos and assorted Obamabilia on their website for as much as $1,099] has sold close to $2 million in Obama-related merchandise; the Los Angeles Times has sold close to $1 million.

With Obama items ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous, Madison Avenue has also started deconstructing Obama’s marketing success. Take Pepsi’s (NYSE: PEP) new logo, for example, which drew immediate comparisons to the Obama campaign logo:

Of course, Pepsi's new "Yes You Can" slogan speaks for itself.

And these incredible similarities could just be the beginning: A great deal of attention has been paid to Obama’s official font, Gotham. Originally designed for GQ, Gotham has quickly become branding and marketing’s go-to typeface. Over the life of the Obama campaign, it’s been used by brands ranging from Banana Republic (NYSE:GPS) to Kia Motors to Saks Fifth Avenue (NYSE: SKS) to Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO) to Saturday Night Live.

And with Obama’s old Chrysler retailing for over $100,000 on eBay, there’s no telling how far the new president’s populist appeal may go.

This country was not founded as a democracy it was founded as a republic.  Does anyone remember the pledge of allegiance "and to the republic for which it stands".  Democracy is what allowed us to get in this position in the first place.  Popular opinion placed in the wrong direction and supported by the government.  What happened to honorable leaders that stand for what is right regardless of popular appeal and lobbyist groups?

I'm hoping that he doesn't crap his pants in fear during the first week in the oval office. His inexperience I'm afraid is going to show very early.

The best evidence of this is that his appointments have all been from the old boys club of the Clinton years. His doesn't know anyone inside the beltway and who he should pick - so he diverts to the past. Which is exactly what we don't need.

God is the only one who can help us. We just have to pray real

hard and have more faith. Obama is not our god, Jesus is!

I had hoped to make Obama the first Democrat I had ever voted for in my life and I would have in 4 to 8 years. However, I would not participate in leading to slaughter what might have been the greatest president in our countries history.  No one can change this country in 4 years from a policy and economic model that originated as the “New Deal” over a half century ago.

I assure you the same idiots who believe that Bush is responsible for this economic mess will surely find a way to pin it on this proven brilliant and potentially great young man when the economy does not improve fast enough.  We live in a time where life is gauged in seconds and blaming past administrations fades faster than the paint on in a new Chevy.

Obaaaaaama will do nothing as president just as he did as a senator. He and his chicago goons and liberal washington sidekicks will sink us in 2-3 years tops. do whatever you can to shed any debt by then and brace yourself for double digit inflation.

All I have to say is I hope Obama is a AMERICAN and not a Africian? Amierican. Born in the USA, American, born in Africa AFRICAN. What the hell is a African American???? Kinda like a Russian American?  Good luck Mr. President Obama and God bless you and all of your appointees cause we in America I meen the AMERICAN AMERICANS Need good leadership

Who is worse the fool or the fool that follows the fool?

OBAMA CAMPAIGNED ON THE 'CHANGE' PLATFORM.  SINCE HE NEVER ARTICULATED WHAT CHANGE MEANT TO HIM, PEOPLE INTERPRETED IT TO MEAN WHAT THEY WANTED CHANGE TO BE.  THAT MEANS, OBAMA IS GOING DISAPPOINT A GREAT MANY PEOPLE.  THE ONLY REAL CHANGE I SEE, IS THAT THE BUSH ADMINISTRATION WAS REPLACED BY THE CLINTON ADMINISTRATION, NOT THE OBAMA ADMINISTRATION.  I WISH HIM WELL NOT BECAUSE I LIKE HIM, NOT BECAUSE I THINK HE CAN MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE AND NOT BECAUSE I APPROVE OF HIS POLICIES, BUT BECAUSE IF HE FAILS BIG TIME, SO DOES THE COUNTRY.  OBAMA'S BIGGEST PROBLEM ISN'T THE MIDDLE CLASS OR THE WHITES, IT IS THE FAR LEFT LOONS AND THE INNER-CITY BLACKS WHO HAVE BEEN PROMISED A FREE RIDE UNDER OBAMA (CHECK THE ACORN PROMISES MADE TO GET POOR BLACKS TO VOTE FOR HIM) AND OUTRAGEOUS PROMISED MADE TO THE LEFT WING LOONS WHO WANT TO CHANGE THIS COUNTRY INTO ZIMBABWE WEST.  I WILL BE UPSET AND DEMAND THE CONGRESS AND THE REPUBLICANS PUSH BACK HIS LIBERAL AGENDA, BUT THE LOONS AND THE POOR BLACKS WIL BE MUCH MORE MILITANT.  IT WILL GET VERY UGLY REAL FAST IF HE DOESN'T DELIVER ON THE 'FORTY ACRES AND A MULE' THAT ACORN PROMISED THESE PEOPLE.

Quit whining conservatives!  At least Obama has started addressing the problem while Bush has been sitting around slashing environmental regulations and doing nothing to help the economy.  He isn't even president yet, give him a break.
