What isn't Apple saying about CEO's health?

Steve Jobs, the chief executive of Apple (AAPL), is taking a six-month medical leave to recuperate, the company said Wednesday.

And just when we thought the prolonged Jobs health drama was settled. Last week, Jobs said he was getting treatment for a hormone deficiency that was blocking key proteins from his body. But those health issues are more complex than thought, he said in an e-mail to employees Wednesday.

The news will undoubtedly rattle investors who have been on edge about Jobs's health for months. Stock index futures dropped after the announcement, and I expect a lot of turmoil in the market Thursday. After-hours trading of Apple shares was halted Wednesday.

The news also raises big questions about what Apple isn't sharing with investors and employees. The company has bungled the Jobs health issue from the get-go, and investors remain skittish because Apple's secrecy and misleading statements give no confidence in its management.

One analyst, Brian Marshall of AmTech Research, thinks Jobs will step down as CEO this year but remain an adviser to the company. That could cut $10 to $15 from the stock price, he told the AP.

There are serious questions about Apple's future, not the least of which is the shape of the product pipeline. Apple's chief operating officer, Tim Cook, will take over for Jobs during the medical absence. But can Cook and other executives move the company forward, or is Apple headed to the sidelines for the next six months?

No CEO is more important to his company than Jobs. The company needs to do whatever it can this week to reassure investors and customers that it will remain an industry leader for the next six months, even without Jobs at the helm.

Here's what others are saying about the news:

Forbes: "But after months of shocking weight loss, and after weeks of a Kim-Jung Il style disappearance from public view, the notion that he is only now realizing the extent of his health issues defies all credulity. People might be disinclined to say so out loud, but on the subject of Jobs' health, no one believes these Victorian-like subterfuges."

Silicon Alley Insider: "Unless Jobs’ health suddenly deteriorated in the last week, Jobs misled investors when he addressed the issue. Perhaps he was himself misinformed. Nonetheless, issuing misleading statements to shareholders will certainly open Apple to potential liability."

Needham analyst Charles Wolf: "It is reasonable to expect, given the history of Steve’s illness, that the market is probably going to assume that he is not going to return to Apple."

Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster: "At the end of the day, investors need to come to grips with the reality of a post-Steve Jobs world. This is the most urgent wakeup call they have had.”

Jobs should be put in Jail with Madoff for running AAPL ALONE!!!! Not letting anyone else have any say in the company! What he did was criminal and he deserves his fate!

I'm not surprised. I'm guessing that Jobs is in a battle for his life. I wish him well as I am a cancer survivor. The hormone imbalance excuse just didn't make sense. Apple may need to make its way without Jobs for a long time. I'm sure that the talent there is the best but his micromanaging and leadership will be missed. Look for AAPL to keep dropping.

Remember, you buy a stock for its balance sheet, not for who is the ceo. Because ceo's come and go. Steve jobs is just a sign not the brains behind apple. There are many great people at apple computer including JOBS not just JOBS. Steve Jobs is not the visionary or the the brains behind their inventions. There are a whole lot of engineers behind apples success. This information is from a very good friend of mine who has been with apple since its inception in 1977. This man COOK has been running apple for the last three years that you will see the greatest buying opportunity at $75.00 per share for apple computer you will ever see. Remember, it is about balance sheet, market share, product growth, margin, earnings and the $28 BILLION they have in the bank. You don't buy a tech company for its CEO, because they DIE. This stock will be back at $90.00 within 2 weeks. THANKS STEVE FOR THE OPPORTUNITY TO BUY APPLE STOCK. I WOULD SAY YOUR COMPANY BUT IT ISN'T YOUR COMPANY AND YOU AREN'T THE COMPANY.

As an Apple shareholder I'm pretty upset with how apple has handled Steve Job's health situation.  Job's is an extremely important part of Apple and by not being straightforward with shareholders Apple did all of us a disservice.  We understand that people get sick and that Job's has health problems in the past, but we need to be informed when stuff like this happens.  After last weeks letter from Jobs saying his health problem was "Manageable" this announcment comes as a surprise.  It's clear apples management isn't shareholder friendly.  I'm seriously considering dumping my shares and investing somewhere else.   www.generationyinvestor.com

As a cancer survivor, and also an Apple fan, I can only wish Jobs the very best and hope for a good outcome to his situation.  Apple will survive as there are many, many, talented individuals at the company.  Jobs and his family are entitled to privacy and the time to cope with this most difficult situation.  Just remember, where there's life, there's hope!

C'mon you guys, Steve Jobs is just trying to hang on to the empire he has built.  He is not stupid and I suspect he has a plan in place for a variety of outcomes.  Now is not the time to sell stock, now is the time to buy!

Mr. Jobs has made a lot of people happy with his products, and many investors rich.  Give the man a break. Cancer is a horrible way to go, and he's no doubt doing the best he can do on all fronts.  I  indentify with him.  History will show him as one of the great ones of our time.

Mr SK who is an Apple shareholder, you are a very self-centered person.

I am just wondering:  1.  How many of us know the CEO of the companies we hold stocks in?    2.  Are we all taking our cues from the Enquirer/Star/Us  media circus?  Jobs is a smart guy; Gates is a smart guy; Buffett is a smart guy;  obviously there are lots of employees that will carry these companies while their top guys either retire or take a leave of absence for whatever reason or die....how shallow are we all getting.  How about some prayers for the man's health and for his family?  We have lost our minds in this country while chasing the almighty bottom line!

adam why would you say something like steve jobs deserves his fate. the man is sick and you say something like that, what if it was your mother or father and people said that she or he deserves their fate what would you do or say to them. you should watch what you say because something worse could happen to you or someone that you love and than i would like to see what you have to say than. be cool my friend and do not say things like that.
