The 'green' revolution in cars dies off

Up until now, the biggest obstacle to the sale of hybrid cars is that some Americans think the people who drive them are sissies. That may be true, but Toyota has sold more than one million of its Prius models worldwide. Honda is not far behind with its less expensive models. The Big Three could not fit all their electric and ethanol-powered cars onto the showroom floor at the Detroit Car Show.

Toyota now admits that the sales of its Prius are dying in the U.S. That is because of two things. One is that no cars are selling at all. The other is that hybrids are expensive. The price of all the extra technology gets passed on to the consumers.

U.S. auto firms are getting into the "green" car business at just the wrong time, which is consistent with the rest of their behavior over the last four decades. Oil prices are moving back toward $30 and many economists believe this that will be the new normal. China and India have cut imported oil as their economies slow. Americans would rather ride bikes that drive cars.

When Americans do look at a new car, their vision is likely to be short-sighted. Gasoline is back under $1.70 and if oil moves down further prices will fall more. If a hybrid runs $5,000 more than a traditional gas car, who is going to pay that difference to save the environment. No one, particularly when the cost of filling up is down by more than half what is was last summer. Who cares what happens in 2015?

The green car revolution was based on the premise that the average man could help the Amazon rain forests and save money on driving at the same time.

Send a memo to the monkeys. The trees are going away.

Bear! Could not agree more! A dried up DOA Peach!

Not to say we should not use commen sense in our daily life!  Looking for new and better ways is part of man's history!  But the radical extremisum is stupid! slow and steady saves the day Letting fools lead you in "Chiken Little" fashion is not the way to go!  Scientests whose income are tied to financial funding by the Government will say and do anything you tell them if it means thier jobs!  Having a free and un restrained scientific community is of the utmost importance!  Free discussion by scientists is a must! Proof of a theory is a must!  Reverification by other non-aligned scientists is of utmost importance!  What we are being fed is bilge-water!

Justin, I really don't care what the grennies drive out west. Just leave me alone and let me drive what I want (V8 Suburban with 6,000 lbs of towing power). I never whined about the gas being $4 but I would rather burn it at $1.75. Its my boat thats the real gas hog, only gets 2mpg. The jet skiis are much better so I run them all day, just keep filling em up. So spend your $ on the hybrid, Im spending mine on toys and gas.

Only someone as narrow minded as Humans, would belive we have such an impact on the temp. of the earth! I'd like to see some global warming, better than 30 below, as it was this morning!

LEROY... are you suggesting that the "experts" may be swayed by whoever may be sponsoring / supporting their research? Well, I'm just aghast...

LOL!!!

I'm all against pollution. I like to fish and hunt and eat what I kill. But the globaal warming is way over hyped.

Global Warming,..... er, I forget its now called Climate Change because the earth is now in a cooling period is a huge scam. Some people (think  big Al Gore) are in the process of becoming rich or have become rich peddling this crap and of course many new (useless) government jobs have been created  as a result of the scam and the new "hope and change" guy plans to add many more. I can't wait to fly on the new wind powered aircraft that these crazies will try to invent so that no fossil fuels are ever burned again. History is filled with "chicken littles" and our times are no different.

MATT... now you're gonna get the dang PETA people fired up... HOLY smokes...

If it's too late already, then who gives a darn about all this green stuff?  Ok, ok, not everyone says it's too late.  First, there has been climate change as long as this planet has existed in its present form.  That's over billions of years, folks, long before any cows farted or a tailpipe was even dreamed of.

Second, all of that "scientific" research "proving" global warming is based on computer modeling.  As someone who has done research with computer simulation before (not in climate, I admit), I'll tell you that what these models spit out is completely dependent on the assumptions built in.  All factors cannot be known and accounted for, so they are entered into the model as they are assumed to be.  Too much room there for someone to nudge the final outcome in one direction or the other.  No one can possibly know everything there is to make these models accurate, even if those who developed them were completely objective and dispassionate.  They are heavily prone to error.  Our interpretation of existing evidence of past climate is not perfect, but it is less prone to major error.  More often than not, this latter data suggests that the Earth's climate change has always been influence by factors that have long predated humanity, much less the industrial revolution.

Stop drinking the kool-aid.  Don't take things as gospel from every acronym foundation in this country.

How quickly Americans forget!!  Remember the 70's and the gas lines, odd/even days to buy gas, etc.?  Not that gas is down in price once again, Americans are ready to forget this past summer.  Gas will surely rise again and it won't take thirty plus years to do it.  The oil companies are playing games with the nation, backed by the oil lobby in government, as well as dubious politicians.  It is time that we demand that auto makers build more efficient cars, whether gas, electric, or some alternate fuel.  We now know that lack of demand for gas did lower the price, but how long will this last?  The oil companies can be beaten at their own game if we as citizens demand more fuel efficient and greener cars.  If done correctly, this time it might even be possible to win this round.

Well hell's bells... I'm pretty sure that the Amighty Obama is gonna save this too when he's done giving everyone jobs and doing his "Robin Hood" impersonation...

Then, his world "BIG HUG" to stop terrorism and make Iran be good little guys
