Could Indian outsourcing be in trouble?

One of the biggest outsourcing firms in India has been caught up in a huge accounting fraud -- and the scandal is big enough that American companies might think twice about who they outsource to in the future.

Executives at Satyam Computer Services (SAY) said the company has been cooking its books, grossly exaggerating profits and cash balances for years. In fact, $1 billion that the company says it had were nonexistent, according to The New York Times. Satyam has done work for a third of the Fortune 500, including General Electric (GE) and General Motors (GM).

The short-term impact? Customers will immediately switch to Satyam's competition. In the long term, U.S. companies may take a hard look at their outsourcing, particularly at the accounting practices and regulatory structure in other countries.

The scandal has “put a question mark on the entire corporate governance system in India,” one asset manager in New Delhi told Reuters.

Shares of Satyam fell nearly 80% in response to the news, and trading was halted on the New York Stock Exchange. The company's chairman and his brother, who was the managing director, have resigned.

Satyam had already been operating in shady territory. The company had planned to spend $1.6 billion on two construction firms -- both partly owned by the chairman and his family. Investors were incensed, and demanded that the sale be stopped.

And the World Bank said last month it would stop doing business with Satyam because of inappropriate business practices.

Here's what others are saying about Satyam's news:

ZDNet: "At this early stage, it is not possible to say exactly how Satyam engineered the fraud but regardless, it draws into question the general viability of the Indian outsourcing market."

Indian asset manager Jayesh Shroff: "“It’s a shocker. People will no longer be willing to take income statements at face value. This has also raised questions about cash holdings of other companies.”

Forrester executive Sudin Apte: "It's going to impact the Indian outsourcing industry. Customers are going to be concerned about offshoring firms in India."

The Wall Street Journal: "What (the chairman) failed to understand is the general intolerance for corporate opacity these days -- a byproduct of the global financial crisis. Still to be seen is just how well this degree of scrutiny sticks when Indian companies are back in a bull market."

Wake up people. None of these Corps are going to do a damn thing unless we the people STOP BUYING THEIR PRODUCT. We control our the money, American's need to stop sending our money oversea's. We can fix this problem by doing one thing. Pay alittle more and start to BUY AMERCIAN PRODUCT'S Hello people

John (at 7:34 PM) has it right. As Walt Kelly said in "Pogo" years ago: "We have met the enemy, and it is us."

Outsourcing has nothing to do with the crushed economy. Stop blaming India and PAKISTAN for the troubles cause in America.More than half the people leaving these comments are racists and naive to the economic conditions. If you have a skill then only you have job. Its not the fault of Indians if they are better doctors and engineers. The economy sucks right now because of the president that you guys chose twice and he drove this country into a meaningless war and on which we spend billions every day. SO stop blaming INDIA and take some responsibility for a dumb president that you all chose.

Even in the face of news such as this I bet there are still companies such as Caterpillar that will outsource to these criminals. It's all about the cheapest price you can get. It doesn't seem to matter if you are a criminal company or provide a valuable service... it's about cheap! It just amazes me that the boards of these companies let them piss away their companies for short term gains. You want to build the best product in the world and think you can do it with the cheapest labor... Sorry folks... you got your education and your degree can't you figure out it doesn't work that way!

Oh yeah buy American products because they are so reliable right ? I wonder why TOYOTA is the number one automobile company in America and around the globe!!

Oh please already with the education and outsourcing rants.... Of course it's cheaper to get an education outside the US. that is exactly why there are more doctors from India and Asia. There are also more store owners and about everything else you can think of. Because our all knowing government allows them to come to this country and set up their stores and not pay any taxes. They can send their money home to their countries without penalty. It just slays me that someone who doesn't pay our taxes can take our money and get better benefits than a citizen who works. This system needs torn apart and rebuilt. So yes Shawn go ahead and criticize our President... he has kept this country safe and yes he let's foreigners keep raping this country something I would think you would be applauding him for. If your from Mexico or India where else would you go other than to this country? The land of freebies for immigrants.

Nadia get with the times and get your facts straight. I think GM is still number 1... in fact it's been recently publicized as such. As far as reliability American vehicles have caught up with foreign and that has been well publicized also.

Let me ask you james that when was the last time you saw a white man standing outside someone's house and cutting grass or cleaning your house. People like you chose Bush and everyone knows that in his tenure this country was driven to garbage.yeah you are right a lot if Indians and other races own grocery stores and a lot if Indians are in NASA, medical field and engineers. IF you are so good at it go ahead and grab the job no body is stopping you. But you are one of those people who like to sit in their basement eating Cheetos and then whine about the economy. If you are not good enough then let someone else take the place. Narrow minded and ignorant people like you think that this is a white man's country only but i hate to break it you , the slavery age is over. Wake up and smell the coffee.

Oh i have my facts straight. May be you should listen and read the news. A company asking for bailout will be number one?!! LOL. Wow i thought you would know better

BILLIONS of dollars spent on a "stupid war"... Count the BILLIONS of dollars spent on a worthless welfare system. BILLIONS of dollars flushed through a medicare system.. BILLIONS of dollars pissed away on ILLEGAL people and "ancher babies" then the follow on abuse of the WELFARE system...

And, name ONE President that has done anything good or bad on his own? The President is a figure head and can do NOTHING without Congressional approval. No President does anything without a HUGE staff of advisors and underlings that have analyzed the problem to the slightest detail.. Good Lord..
