US car companies worth over $100 billion

The easy answer to the question of what U.S. operations of the Big Three are worth is that they are worth nothing. That assessment is entirely accurate based on the current encumbrances of union contracts, debt obligations, and supplier payables. Those are perfect calculations for a simpleton, but they don't take into account the fact that based on the earnings of all the companies which have done business in the United States over the last two decades, the market is profitable.

Based on the North American sales of Ford and GM and their share of the market, total vehicle sales in the U.S. will be about $350 billion in 2008. All of the U.S. car companies lose money on their piece of that. It is hard to say what the P&L for the market is for foreign car companies.

But, in a bankruptcy, with most of the unnecessary costs out of the Big Three, and most of their debt obligations gone, their piece of the American market, just shy of 50%, has tremendous value, which may be why companies like Toyota, Honda, VOW, and the Renault-Nissan operation could find the assets of the U.S. companies very attractive.

The American piece of U.S. car sales is about $175 billion now. Looking at the ratio of sales to market value at Honda, 56%, the operations of The Big Three, scrubbed of obligations, would be worth $100 billion. If the margin on the assets could be moved to 10%, or $17 billion, at a seven times operating income valuation, the assets are worth $120 billion.

In 1999, when American car companies were doing well, GM had a market cap of $53 billion. Ford's was $86 billion.

Bankruptcy may not be the ideal route for creditors, unions, or the current management, but it may be the only way to unlock over $100 billion in value.

In addition to a growing number of US Banks being bought out by foreign Banks maybe the US automakers can follow suit and have their remnants bought out by the foreign automakers, what a way to go, gets them off the hook.  Lets hope the US dooesn't get into any major war that would require manufacturing of anything in large numbers! Thank goodness for outsourcing, maybe China can mass produce our high tech weapons for us!

Bill I have the very same thoughts. But I'm sure  one of the sudoe experts will have an opinion, where and who could build Abrams Tanks

What's more certian than death and taxes? in the end we're all dead and China rules.

Again fo the US auto companies it comes back to poor management, overly powewrful unions and the associated costs now abd into the future, as well as bloated agrements with the dealers.  Granted the unions are becomig reasonable on pay scale issues for the future, but they are not willing to give on legacy costs associated with retirees and health care issues.  Health insurance issues need to be voided.  Who gets health insurance when they no longer are not working unless they are on Medicare or Medcaid.  The military you say, I agree, but I served in two wars, was wounded in combat, and served 24 years.  I did not as in some casesf union workers, work sometimes, collect sub-pay some time, and did not make shoddy cars as were made in the past from the Big 3.  I think all associated with this industry need to come together to save their industry and not the US Taxpayer, for the US Taxpayer will never reeive anything individaully for the dollars spent or wasted.  CAn someone tell me why I need to guarantee an auto worker more than $50,000 a year in earnings not counting benefits.

nothing is gong to change at the little 2 with the gov. involved, USSR style culturre and involvment, they delivered the Yugo and we will get the same, the unions do not need to change under Obama, so noting iwll change, we own them and no one i s going to invest money or their careers in them until the gov. gets OUT.  the good people will leave and new ones will not join, in the end we will get tariffs to portect GM and Ford, from compettioin, and the result will be inferior cars, high costs, low reliablity, and slow sales. welcome to socializim.

Mark how much ars you making with 24 yrs. in the service( thanks for your service by the way) I'am not saying the auto workers are worth what they make but all of us would be getting the same pay as the people of china makes if it wasn't  for the unions of long ago. I have bought Fords all my life and no complaints there. If Ford and Gm. go under see how much your toyota and honda ASSEMBLED  here will cost YOU !!!!!!!! There profits go back to japan.

Looks like Bill and Preston One are the only ones here with any sense.

And I agree with James, People are like sheep, who will build our war machines when war comes, and it will. Trust the Chinese who are poisining our animals, toys pills etc...A culture we were at war with 60 years ago??? (Pearl Harbor)

Work of US car companies is very useful and important.  I like these company work.
