Do auto workers really earn $73 an hour?

The New York Times debunks the claim that the Big Three auto workers earn $73 an hour. That number came from the car companies themselves during union negotiations, writes David Leonhardt.

But it isn't completely accurate. Yes, the companies do spend about $73 for every hour of unionized work, Leonhardt writes. Not all of that goes to the worker's pocket.

Here's how it breaks down:

Cash: All the basics -- wages, overtime and vacation pay -- add up to $40 an hour.

Extras: Health insurance and pension costs total about $15 an hour.

Retiree benefits: These are fixed costs, and the Big Three have a huge pool of retirees out there, Leonhardt writes. They add up to about $15 an hour.

So the true hourly salary for a union worker is about $55. That's about twice what the typical American worker makes. And it's about $10 more than what a nonunionized worker at Honda or Toyota makes, Leonhardt writes.

"There is good reason to keep GM and Chrysler from collapsing in 2009. (Ford is in slightly better shape.) The economy is in the worst recession in a generation. You can think of the Detroit bailout as a relatively cost-effective form of stimulus. It’s often cheaper to keep workers in their jobs than to create new jobs."

But, he adds, the Big Three will have to get smaller to survive.

There are good times and bad times.  The country is having a bad time now and needs to undergo some radical changes. Getting rid of teams like Mr. Wagoner'a is the first adjustment. Getting real with pay and benefits is on the table.  If not the bankruptcy court will make the adjustments for you and that is their job. Time to step up to the plate and see if it is going to be half full, half empty, or just bare. Major adjustments with head high is needed, its also called a stiff upper lip.  Much better than the old days of the soup lines.

I work for one of the Big 3 and I make $28.00 an hour. Overtime has been gone for a year. I wish I made over $70 an hour!

Soup lines are where we are headed with that mentality

it does not matter if the entire $73 goes into the worker's pocket! that is not the issue. however, $73 an hour no matter how you slice it, is THE COST! the bottom line...welcome to accounting 101! if that is what it cost them to maintain an emplyee then that is the number! stockholders do not want to hear excuses, exceptions, or what ifs!

The auto companies are adding direct and indirect labor together to come up with an incorrect figure. Most employees and supervisors do not understand the differwence between direct and indirect labor. In tghe long run a bailout is not going to work. Its only wasting our money and prolonging the inevitable. The american automakers have nothing to offer the american peiople. The other american automakers like Honda, Toyota, Nissan, Hyundai and BMW as well as others who have 19 US auto plants currently in operation in this country with more plants on the way do have cars americans will buy for reasons of quality and cost. I hope you will note the order in which i wrote that.

How can Detroit compete with Foriegn Automakers when US workers are getting paid more?  The UAW is going to have to make concessions or face the probability of no jobs at all.  The Auto Bailout plan will only extend the inevitable. Congress is throwing good money at bad businesses.  Let them go into bankruptcy and restructure.

I don't make $55.00 and hour so I can't afford a used let alone a new car, so let the automakers go bankrupt and restructure. K-Mart and Sears diid OK and I can afford K-Mart.

I wish I made $28.00 an hour!!

I notice that the non-union shop workers make about $10 less. Wonder how much of that $10 difference goes into the UAW's pocket? Bottom line, if anyone were to ask the workers (not management, the workers in the factories) at the Big Three if they'd take a 10% cut in pay to keep their jobs, I bet an overwhelming amount of them would. The problems are all with management and UAW greed.

good times ,bad times or anytime.....corporations love it when we start to pick apart everyones "work package",as we all race to the bottom. the autoworkers estimates in this article are still too high. why dont we start on the wonderful packages that are tax dollars are paying for? teachers? police? firemen? politicians? ceo's?....how about a major adjustment to mr.nummer adderton's pay package? and please dont tell me that they are not asking for any loans,....they dont have to.....they just raise your taxes. did i miss any?......lets bring'm all down!
