How much does a US Senate seat cost?

For sale: One U.S. Senate seat. Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich apparently thinks it's "a (expletive) valuable thing," according to federal officials.

If the complaint filed against the Democratic governor is true (link here), then Blagojevich is brazenly corrupt and delusional. He gets to pick the person to fill Barack Obama's now-empty Senate seat, and is charged with trying to sell that seat for hefty returns for himself and his wife.

He apparently got an offer of $500,000 for the seat. I expected the seat to cost more, but the economy is hitting everyone these days, I guess.

The delusional part? According to the complaint, Blagojevich thought he could start a non-profit group, and that Obama could get Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett and Microsoft founder Bill Gates to contribute millions of dollars. He also dreamed of running for president -- despite a lousy 13% approval rating -- and contemplated putting himself in the open Senate seat to further those ambitions.

Blagojevich also wanted to get his wife appointed to corporate boards, which could net her $150,000 a year in director's fees, according to the complaint.

And he allegedly tried to turn the screws on the Tribune Co., saying he wouldn't approve state assistance in the Chicago Cubs sale unless it fired editorial writers who were critical of him.

Blagojevich and his chief of staff were arrested this morning. The shocking story -- plus a slow news day -- has set commenters on fire. Here's what others are saying:

Wall Street Journal: "If prosecutors are right, Blagojevich, accused of looking for either lucre or favors in return for Obama’s Senate seat, made an oft-seen mistake: he believed he had more leverage than he did."

TheDeal.com: "What impact if any will the Blagojevich allegations have on Tribune's bankruptcy filing? In the end, it's doubtful that Blagojevich's alleged role in the Cubs auction, which may have slowed the sale, was directly material to its bankruptcy filing. The team, for instance, is not part of the filing. Nonetheless, it offers some colorful insight into the auction."

Talking Points Memo: "I never fail to be amazed at the brazenness and stupidity of some political crooks. I mean, I think everyone involved in politics or interested in political corruption in the country had to know that Blagojevich's phones were tapped and probably his offices were bugged, and that Pat Fitzgerald had him under the craziest level of scrutiny. And he tries to sell the senate seat with that hanging over his head? That's simply amazing."

Chicago Tribune's Eric Zorn: "If these allegations are true, Blagojevich is not just sleazy and venal, he's also recklessly compulsive.  But an allegedly recklessly compulsive sociopath cannot and does not act alone -- his abetters and enablers included his major donors and his advisers.  They, too, should be called to account."

Politico: "So just what is the problem with Illinois? It certainly seems like Illinois has a particular sweet spot for corruption: Blagojevich’s own predecessor as governor, George Ryan, went to jail in 2007 in a 6-1/2 year sentence for corruption of his own. And two other Illinois governors have faced legal trouble in modern times..."

A given - politics and corruption go hand in hand.  So how does this change?  Can it change?

Our government is too big.  It is involved in things it was never intended to be involved in.  We need transparency in government.  The people don't know what's going on because the information is not made easily available.  Local government is on TV, why not federal government.  Example, all the pork that was added to the bailout bill.  Each item should be noted and which representative added it.  If the voters don't have the information how can they vote for change?

The United States has moved to a socialist government.  It must be what the people want.

Yes, it's still a wonderful country and most of its citizens love it.

Most people are good people.  The rest, well?

Politics is the biggest racket of them all.  I know all of you have to know this.  More favors are done and more dollars change hands.  All of them get their palms greased.  Party affiliation doesn't matter.  When it comes down to it...they are in the game of politics to benefit themselves.  Before the current governor, there was a Republican governor who now sits in jail for his misdeeds.  So, no matter if you are on the left, right or even the center...you have to know that one or more of your representatives are on the take.  Welcome to the real but sad world!

WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD... No doubt... Congress, state politics... has to be about the biggest "good ol' boy" group their is. Representing your people and asking "what can I do for you" has long turned into "What's in it for ME".. It's shameful..

If there's any doubt that Obama knows this scumbag, check this out: www.telegraph.co.uk/.../Illinois-governor-Rod-Blagojevich-arrested-over-Obama-senate-seat-sale.html

Then tell me Obama didn't lie when he said he didn't know Blagojevich!

Ain't capitalism grand!

When the wealth redistribution starts, I may have to quit working so I can collect Obama's checks and get ahead... Maybe this socialism thing will be ok after all.. Then I'll have money to buy my very own Senate seat

LOL!!!

LOL Bear.

But you'll have to set up some office space in a back alley, or somewhere more befitting a politician.  Hopefully you'll wait a while because I'm hoping that by that time Rome will have hopefully burned, and all the Senators will have been dispatched!

Bear,

Believe it or not, I agree with you -- "our country needs an enema and DC is the place to start."

It is no longer America the beautiful; land of the free -- it has now become America the corrupt; land of the greed. -- One Nation Under the God almighty dollar.

Remember it is "Innocent until proven guilty" -- just because a person is surrounded by corruption does not mean that person is corrupt.

You stated that you agree with "Don't look now" -- who has shown himself to be an egotistical idiot.  -- Therefore, is it okay for me to assume that you are also an egotistical idiot since you agree with him?  To judge you by the company you keep.

If your brother or sister commits a crime should you go to jail also, because you are related?

Everyone is so quick to judge Obama just because he is from ILL -- yet, if someone attempted to judge you for the crimes of another you would have an absolute fit.

Stop it has his head up Obama's rear oricfice as far as Bloggie has his hand in the cookie jar. Rezco, Obama, Blagojevich, the Dailys, all meet in the same circles, votes in exchange for money and favors. Isn't that what  community organiizer does? Get the poor and degenerates to vote for the liberals in exchange for promises of free stuff while they screw the middle class? I have 2 questions for stop it: 1) do you have children? 2nd) do you care what kind of friends they have? I assume you don't mind (if you have any) your kids hanging out with  dropouts, drug users, criminals, deviants, and other dirtbags. After all associations and who you are friends with don't matter. You are an idiot.

What's amazing to me is how many of you acknowlede that most of(and not all) of our politicians are corrupt, statements like "he was one of the few stupid enough to get caught".  If so many are aware of these things, why can we not do anything to change it.  Why do we all just sit by and allow these things to happen.  I know we are all very busy in our lives, work, family ect.. but enough is enough.  On a different note, why is it that we get charged gas/fuel recovery charges when gas is over $4, but now that it is back under $2, none of these companies have even reduced these fee's let alone get rid of them all together.  They would be smart to rename these fee's again.

dean-philly,

First of all, ALL of our politicians are corrupt in some fashion.  Whether that corruption aligns with their constituency is what brings the corruption to light or not.  Why else would someone take a c-r-a-p-p-y job where everyone compliains to them and where they get paid so relatively little?  They're trying to mold laws to their advantage.  Whether that means they're doing what their constituency wants or turning their backs on them and doing what big money wants, it's still a form of corruption unless they've done what they promised to do when they got elected, which is a rarity in politics.

Secondly, why rename the gas/fuel recovery charges?  I mean, they've already got inplicit approval to steal from us in another creative way, why would they have any reason to change that?
