How much does a US Senate seat cost?

For sale: One U.S. Senate seat. Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich apparently thinks it's "a (expletive) valuable thing," according to federal officials.

If the complaint filed against the Democratic governor is true (link here), then Blagojevich is brazenly corrupt and delusional. He gets to pick the person to fill Barack Obama's now-empty Senate seat, and is charged with trying to sell that seat for hefty returns for himself and his wife.

He apparently got an offer of $500,000 for the seat. I expected the seat to cost more, but the economy is hitting everyone these days, I guess.

The delusional part? According to the complaint, Blagojevich thought he could start a non-profit group, and that Obama could get Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett and Microsoft founder Bill Gates to contribute millions of dollars. He also dreamed of running for president -- despite a lousy 13% approval rating -- and contemplated putting himself in the open Senate seat to further those ambitions.

Blagojevich also wanted to get his wife appointed to corporate boards, which could net her $150,000 a year in director's fees, according to the complaint.

And he allegedly tried to turn the screws on the Tribune Co., saying he wouldn't approve state assistance in the Chicago Cubs sale unless it fired editorial writers who were critical of him.

Blagojevich and his chief of staff were arrested this morning. The shocking story -- plus a slow news day -- has set commenters on fire. Here's what others are saying:

Wall Street Journal: "If prosecutors are right, Blagojevich, accused of looking for either lucre or favors in return for Obama’s Senate seat, made an oft-seen mistake: he believed he had more leverage than he did."

TheDeal.com: "What impact if any will the Blagojevich allegations have on Tribune's bankruptcy filing? In the end, it's doubtful that Blagojevich's alleged role in the Cubs auction, which may have slowed the sale, was directly material to its bankruptcy filing. The team, for instance, is not part of the filing. Nonetheless, it offers some colorful insight into the auction."

Talking Points Memo: "I never fail to be amazed at the brazenness and stupidity of some political crooks. I mean, I think everyone involved in politics or interested in political corruption in the country had to know that Blagojevich's phones were tapped and probably his offices were bugged, and that Pat Fitzgerald had him under the craziest level of scrutiny. And he tries to sell the senate seat with that hanging over his head? That's simply amazing."

Chicago Tribune's Eric Zorn: "If these allegations are true, Blagojevich is not just sleazy and venal, he's also recklessly compulsive.  But an allegedly recklessly compulsive sociopath cannot and does not act alone -- his abetters and enablers included his major donors and his advisers.  They, too, should be called to account."

Politico: "So just what is the problem with Illinois? It certainly seems like Illinois has a particular sweet spot for corruption: Blagojevich’s own predecessor as governor, George Ryan, went to jail in 2007 in a 6-1/2 year sentence for corruption of his own. And two other Illinois governors have faced legal trouble in modern times..."

If the FBI were not "controlled" by the Pols in D.C. they would clean out the majority of the government. This started in the 50's when the Government was "Bought", both parties. Isn't it strange that they spend millions for a job that pays less than the corporate world! And, couple this with the fact that we don't have an honest method of voting, in the "Greatest" country in the world, why would we expect anything else. Even Jesus drove the merchants out of the Temple, I wonder why???

I'm just putting my bid for the seat right now in case our legal system decides that what Blagojevich did wasn't so bad after all.  $1.95

I know it's not much, but it's more than any of the current aholes politicians is worth!

Hell fire... I'm mortgaged, financed, indebted.. maybe I need to be a "public servant" so I can at least break even if not make a few dollars.. I'm in.

Before all of you ‘without sin begin casting stones’ — judging and condemning someone based only on their geographical beginnings and nothing more — let’s look at this from another perspective.

First, let us assume (as doubtful as that is) that every person commenting on this thread is a good, descent, law-abiding citizen who actually cares about others and really wants ‘Positive Change’ within our country and the world — therefore, they have some concept as to the amount of frustration involved when you are a ‘Good’ person living within a corrupt world.

Now, for one moment really think about being this ‘Good’ person sitting in a Senate seat surrounded by corruption — so much corruption that it spreads all the way down to ‘Sunday school teachers’ — you cannot do anything about it — total frustration — you can only sit there and watch everything ‘Go to hell in a hand-basket.’

What would you do?  Give up and move to another state?  Why bother, corruption is found throughout our country.  — Give up and move to another country?  Why bother, corruption is found all over the world.

Someone has to do something to put a stop to it — it must end — and you cannot depend on the other citizens of this country to actually get up off their posteriors and take action — for they are either corrupt themselves OR only capable of whining, moaning, groaning, complaining, and pointing the finger of blame and judgment; while stuffing their faces with alcohol & fast foods, driving gas-guzzling SUV’s and watching ‘Reality TV.’

What would you do if you were this good, descent, law-abiding Senator completely surrounded by corruption — tired and fed-up with the system — yet, you are a young, determined, head-strong individual, possessing the necessary financial resources, who will be damned if this will continue?

I know what I would do — if I were 20 years younger with enough financial resources to do so.

“As God as my witness, if I have to lie, steal, cheat, or kill [becoming temporarily corrupt myself; whatever I must do; I will position myself in the highest governmental office of this country where I will then have the power to implement ‘Positive Change’ and make a difference in the world]”

However, only ‘Good’ people who truly care about others — would understand that.

There is absolutely nothing that Obama could do or may have already done that even remotely compares to the extreme damages that President Bush has caused this country — Bush has done it all; there is nothing left to fear.

So what I wanna know is what is the big deal? Blogovich is just another of the gimme generation. Wait till Chicago politics really gets going in the White House, I give it 2 years. It's all about association, association, association.

By the way, how ya liking all the "change"?

President Bush has caused all these "Extreme damages" to this coountry... what a joke... President Bush can no more do any more damage than Obama can single handedly "save" this country... The President is barely more than a figure head. CONGRESS (unfortunately) is the problem. And, worse than that.. WE the PEOPLE are the ones that put them there...

Hey STOP IT,

Sounds like you're the one ranting here.  Just because someone with your obvious political affiliation got caught with his hand so far down in the cookie jar that if it was a human orifice it would be comming out the other end, it's no reason for you to get defensive.  Unless you approve of complete political corruption.

As for anyone else her being a "good person" that's not the point unless they're in public office as well.  The point is, this scumbag put himself in a position where public trust is essential and he handily torched that bridge.

As for Obama's affiliation, if this same scumbag was in the news for saving a puppy from a burning building you'd have seen Obama on the news telling everyone how he has been close to Blagojevich for years.

You think there's nothing left to fear because of Bush huh?  Just wait until our federal taxes eclipse 1/2 of our wages because the liberal redistribution of wealth machine doesn't have a lid anymore. D-U-M-B-A-S-S!

Hey 'Don't look now';

Thanks, you just proved my point -- you have judged and condemned Obama for the crimes of another.

FYI:  It is the Governor of ILL NOT the Senator who "got caught with his hand so far down in the cookie jar..."

Typical of an egotistical idiot.

DON"T LOOK NOW.... Whew.. are you all right?  LOL!!!

I agree with you but my blood pressure won't allow me to get too wound up.

Revolt is on the way. Just a matter of time. Corruption.. greed... our country needs an enema and DC is the place to start.

Hey STOP IT,

If you really think that Obama didn't know this guy you're delusional.  That he lied about it IS the point.
