How much does a US Senate seat cost?

For sale: One U.S. Senate seat. Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich apparently thinks it's "a (expletive) valuable thing," according to federal officials.

If the complaint filed against the Democratic governor is true (link here), then Blagojevich is brazenly corrupt and delusional. He gets to pick the person to fill Barack Obama's now-empty Senate seat, and is charged with trying to sell that seat for hefty returns for himself and his wife.

He apparently got an offer of $500,000 for the seat. I expected the seat to cost more, but the economy is hitting everyone these days, I guess.

The delusional part? According to the complaint, Blagojevich thought he could start a non-profit group, and that Obama could get Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett and Microsoft founder Bill Gates to contribute millions of dollars. He also dreamed of running for president -- despite a lousy 13% approval rating -- and contemplated putting himself in the open Senate seat to further those ambitions.

Blagojevich also wanted to get his wife appointed to corporate boards, which could net her $150,000 a year in director's fees, according to the complaint.

And he allegedly tried to turn the screws on the Tribune Co., saying he wouldn't approve state assistance in the Chicago Cubs sale unless it fired editorial writers who were critical of him.

Blagojevich and his chief of staff were arrested this morning. The shocking story -- plus a slow news day -- has set commenters on fire. Here's what others are saying:

Wall Street Journal: "If prosecutors are right, Blagojevich, accused of looking for either lucre or favors in return for Obama’s Senate seat, made an oft-seen mistake: he believed he had more leverage than he did."

TheDeal.com: "What impact if any will the Blagojevich allegations have on Tribune's bankruptcy filing? In the end, it's doubtful that Blagojevich's alleged role in the Cubs auction, which may have slowed the sale, was directly material to its bankruptcy filing. The team, for instance, is not part of the filing. Nonetheless, it offers some colorful insight into the auction."

Talking Points Memo: "I never fail to be amazed at the brazenness and stupidity of some political crooks. I mean, I think everyone involved in politics or interested in political corruption in the country had to know that Blagojevich's phones were tapped and probably his offices were bugged, and that Pat Fitzgerald had him under the craziest level of scrutiny. And he tries to sell the senate seat with that hanging over his head? That's simply amazing."

Chicago Tribune's Eric Zorn: "If these allegations are true, Blagojevich is not just sleazy and venal, he's also recklessly compulsive.  But an allegedly recklessly compulsive sociopath cannot and does not act alone -- his abetters and enablers included his major donors and his advisers.  They, too, should be called to account."

Politico: "So just what is the problem with Illinois? It certainly seems like Illinois has a particular sweet spot for corruption: Blagojevich’s own predecessor as governor, George Ryan, went to jail in 2007 in a 6-1/2 year sentence for corruption of his own. And two other Illinois governors have faced legal trouble in modern times..."

How come the bidding parties haven't been busted too?  Or at least put their names public!

Just in the image of Bush (Carly Group) and Cheney (haliburton). The total political system is dishonest from thr top down. It is time we learn from the French.

So, it  never fails to amaze me how absolutely paranoid folks can be, or how they can twist things around to think there would be any tie to Obama at all. Is the right FULL of crazies that will do ANYTHING to try and detract from probably one of the smartest people in any political office today (yes, still talking about Obama).

Yes, this Governor Rod is clearly delusional...and clearly if he knew his phone line was tapped he may have laid low on the story telling, but trying to tie it into some broader conspiracy is like the nuts that think the world trade center was. You guys give too much credit for how deep the rabbit hole goes. Pork barrel spending shows you all by itself how simple and shallow the politics really go. It is all about trading...

Then you get some nutty Gov. like this here and there that somehow gets elected (hey, those people ELECTED HIM...)...that actually is delusional and you just have to fire him. :) In this case he's getting 1 better than fired...he's getting a wake up call that his duty isn't to himself but his constituents.

Did anyone see Bush caring about ALL his constituents or just the big corps, oil, and war profiteers?

What is Obama showing in the last few weeks? He's showing he is going to try and meet ALL needs for the greater good of the prosperity of his country. He's going to be probably the most open and fair president we've had in decades that may actually save your country from imploding.

Stop the bashing and start respecting what these public servants that ARE good are trying to do to make it so you have a roof over your head, food for your family, safety, etc. And maybe...if Obama can reverse the damage done by Bush and the financial industry the last 10 years....MAYBE keep your ability to retire someday and not have our country become the next russia with a fully imploded economy. The only reason Russia is relevant today is oil. We don't have that same resource to fall back upon.

Anyone that really educates themselves on the facts know this is true. If you are one of the bashing nuts, turn your brain back on.

Anyway, glad the Gov. is getting justice served. Looks like folks are doing their job in the legal oversight of those that are corrupt.

The Words of a Great American, In order to continue the assurance of a Free Republic That Republic may have to have a revolution to clean out the bad seed. When will you sit up Americans and realize you hold the power if only you can wield it with wisdom and morality. Will you clean your political house. You haven't look at the stage and who the actors and actresses are. Just new roles with the same faces. Just now you have one from Where? Who Knows?

Hmm Dr. Sick OPNWTBWO, sounds like you have been at the cool aide or maybe a very good blogger from the camp. I do not want my government taking care of me. Why because that is not what our political system was drafted on. It was drafted by the people for the people. The reason the USSR folded was due to a great American President such as Ronald W. Reagan who pushed for peace with military might. Who went to them and said " Bring Down this Wall".

They did not have a capitalist society at all with a competing business infrastructure. It was a broken down, falling apart infrastructure with people standing in food lines to get food. Due the Marxist society they had which was the government taking care of them.

Now look at them, they have many American and International companies who saw and oppertunity in a newly budding neo mix of capitalism and marxism. While the captial ventures made their ways to a place without EPA,DEQ,DOT,etc. Meeting a govenrment with open arms looking for capital investment into there country. So without the hamstringing of government like we have here they begin to bring their oil out of the ground with our equipment and are now doing financially very well.

Well you forget we sit on one of the largest oil shale finds called Bacca North Dakota where there is literally a new city arising out of that black gold area. So your words hold absolutley zero weight here. I will stick to having a Free Competing Market Society without taxpayer monies without their consent being given out to failing business.

Any one who believes that Mr Obama is not part of this are only fooling themseleves.

So what law did he break?  Politians spend millions to get elected to a Senate seat for 6 years...he was right in saying an appointment even for a couple of years with the opportunity to run as the incumbant in the next election is a vaulable commodity.

Jesus was tempted three times by satan - one was he showed Jesus the kingdoms of the world and told him He can have them if He would bow down and worship him.

Maybe the problem is people worshiping false god(s)... lust of the eyes, lust of the flesh, and the pride of life.

How much does a U. S. Senate seat cost? Clearly not as much as it costs to buy the presidency. There are reports of 605 million Dollars and then 651 million Dollars and then 541 million Dollars and the true amount will never be known. We should also be asking "How much does a ruling prevented by the U.S. Supreme court cost? As the U. S. Supreme court will not hear a lawsuit about the question of the qualifications to be President of The United Seates of America. it is surly a lot cheaper to buy silence than a ruling, when the taxpayers are footing the bill for the ruling and the silence can be bought behind closed doors.Just where did all of those Millions of Dollars go? Obama* ??
