How much does a US Senate seat cost?

For sale: One U.S. Senate seat. Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich apparently thinks it's "a (expletive) valuable thing," according to federal officials.

If the complaint filed against the Democratic governor is true (link here), then Blagojevich is brazenly corrupt and delusional. He gets to pick the person to fill Barack Obama's now-empty Senate seat, and is charged with trying to sell that seat for hefty returns for himself and his wife.

He apparently got an offer of $500,000 for the seat. I expected the seat to cost more, but the economy is hitting everyone these days, I guess.

The delusional part? According to the complaint, Blagojevich thought he could start a non-profit group, and that Obama could get Berkshire Hathaway CEO Warren Buffett and Microsoft founder Bill Gates to contribute millions of dollars. He also dreamed of running for president -- despite a lousy 13% approval rating -- and contemplated putting himself in the open Senate seat to further those ambitions.

Blagojevich also wanted to get his wife appointed to corporate boards, which could net her $150,000 a year in director's fees, according to the complaint.

And he allegedly tried to turn the screws on the Tribune Co., saying he wouldn't approve state assistance in the Chicago Cubs sale unless it fired editorial writers who were critical of him.

Blagojevich and his chief of staff were arrested this morning. The shocking story -- plus a slow news day -- has set commenters on fire. Here's what others are saying:

Wall Street Journal: "If prosecutors are right, Blagojevich, accused of looking for either lucre or favors in return for Obama’s Senate seat, made an oft-seen mistake: he believed he had more leverage than he did."

TheDeal.com: "What impact if any will the Blagojevich allegations have on Tribune's bankruptcy filing? In the end, it's doubtful that Blagojevich's alleged role in the Cubs auction, which may have slowed the sale, was directly material to its bankruptcy filing. The team, for instance, is not part of the filing. Nonetheless, it offers some colorful insight into the auction."

Talking Points Memo: "I never fail to be amazed at the brazenness and stupidity of some political crooks. I mean, I think everyone involved in politics or interested in political corruption in the country had to know that Blagojevich's phones were tapped and probably his offices were bugged, and that Pat Fitzgerald had him under the craziest level of scrutiny. And he tries to sell the senate seat with that hanging over his head? That's simply amazing."

Chicago Tribune's Eric Zorn: "If these allegations are true, Blagojevich is not just sleazy and venal, he's also recklessly compulsive.  But an allegedly recklessly compulsive sociopath cannot and does not act alone -- his abetters and enablers included his major donors and his advisers.  They, too, should be called to account."

Politico: "So just what is the problem with Illinois? It certainly seems like Illinois has a particular sweet spot for corruption: Blagojevich’s own predecessor as governor, George Ryan, went to jail in 2007 in a 6-1/2 year sentence for corruption of his own. And two other Illinois governors have faced legal trouble in modern times..."

Don't Look now but,

I totally agree with you.  But you didn't anwser my question.  Why is it that there are so many that believe these things and do nothing about them.  Or is it just that we cannot do anything about it and are under the false belief that we have power in this country.  My question once again, is when will enough be enough.  When will the people take back this country from these crooks and thieves.  I have 2 children at home, and wonder every day what the future will look like for them, and when I think about it, it doesn't make me feel very comfortable.  How can we change this, I wish there was another idea in my head besides revolution.  What bothers me the most is not this governer that got caught, but all the politicians that are smart enough not to get caught, and they are the ones telling us what we can and cannot do.

Great words from a great man:

"It takes a revolution, to make a solution."

"Never make a politician grant you a favour;

They will always want to control you forever."  And finally

"Let righteousness cover the earth like the water cover the sea" -- Marley

The media and political pundits seem  in cohoots with the Illinois governor since their comments hint at what he needs to do next to rehabilitate his reputation - a public pronouncement that he is checking himself into a clinic to treat the hidden shameful disease of compulsive risk taking and reckless self endangerment. He will accomodate a short burst of misguided scorn and pity but it must be followed by gushing admiration for having the character and strength to go public  with such an embarrassing "affliction" which he has suffered in silence for so many years.

JedimasterQuan,

Now, you are an interesting person.  -- Bob or Ziggy?

STOP IT.. well, I had to be away for a bit but WTF? I never said anything about anybody associations. I never said anything about Obama or anythng else. BUT, the law of averages is surely pointing toward more and more corruption. And, yeah.. if my brother commits a crime and I'm involved in it.. hell yeah... maybe we can get adjoining cells...

And, "Egotistical Idiot".. I'm not idiot.. and my ego is long gone. I lost my pride in the divorce several years ago.

JEDI MASTER... why are you quoting someone else? Yoda had his own wisdom. GREAT.. now I'm starting to doubt my Jedi Masters... what IS this world coming to?

Bear,

Yeah, but if your brother commits a crime and you had nothing to do with it should you be jailed?

I will agree that the Gov. of ILL has committed a serious crime -- however, I will not immediately jump onto the band-wagon condemning Obama just because he is from the same state -- need a bit more than that to condemn someone.

Too bad everyone did not scream as loud back in 2000 when a president took office without the popular vote or a mandate -- sending someone to the office of president without directive or orders equates to telling Congress that we do not care; do whatever you want.  --  Now, we wake up 8-years later wondering what happened.  --  We hit the snooze and over-slept, that's what happened.

STOP IT. try to pay attention... I never said anything about the upcoming President... Yeah.. I guess it is too bad for some that the courts made the State of Florida uphold the law and Mr Bush was elected President... And, the President is not elected by popular vote...

Furthermore.. CONGRESS is the power.. and the CONGRESS has been under Democap control for the past couple of years.

I don't especially support a "party" type ordeal. I vote my concience. Just so happens that my ideals and beliefs lean to the right. Individual responsibility and stupid things like that.

And, the governor is being accused of committing CRIMES.. not just A crime.

Government is TOO big.. out of control... THEN one more "ear mark / pork spending" process pops up and it's all topped off by an arrogant criminal state Governor

UNIONS have caused an economic crisis in the auto and other big industry. Now OUR tax dollars have to "bail them out".

Illegal immigration has destroyed the rest of the economy... Supposedly, ILLEGAL workers do the work "nobody else wants to".. what a crock.

Thank God they caught this guy before he ran for President in 2016.

We've already got one like him that ran in 2008.

Obama says he hasn't had any contact with Blagojevich, but one of his top aides say they have communicated quite often and recently. I think we have a little problem here folks. And then there is also a crook named Rezko (Now in Prison).

If you think that Democrats in the same State don't communicate, especially in the State of ILL., then you got your head in the sand. And if you don't think our next President doesn't have any influence over Blagojevich with respect to who should fill that vacant seat left by Obama, then you are extremely ignorant.

As an Ex-cop and Investigator, I can assure you this has happened, just by the fact that both Obama & Blagojevich associated with Rezko, the great fund raiser, who raised funds for both. And went one step further with Obama - he sold him property well below the actual value of that property. When is the last time any one sold you or me property well below its market value - never. Only in Politics where favors are owed.

Why in the world has our Chairman of the Finance & Banking Committee received several sweet heart low interest mortgages? Poor guy (Chris Dodd) said he didn't know he was getting such a great deal. He either "STUPID" or "CROOKED". If he's "STUPID", why do we want him as the Chairman of the Finance & Banking Committee overseeing our Damn Tax Dollars. And if he's not "STUPID" and he's "CROOKED", than why is he still in office and not LOCKED UP with REZKO and Soon to be Jail Bird Blagojevich.

As an Ex-cop, I was an equal opportunist. I Gathered the evidence, and along with some common sense arrested both Democrats and Republicans. Thus the reason I'm a conservative not tied to any one party. Both Parties have crooks!

On a final note, as an Officer who had an assignment to gather background evidence on future hires, I can tell you that Obama because of his associations would never of been eligible for hire on our Cities 300 member Police Force. Nor would he qualify for hire on the very Secret Service detail which protects him and his family.

Folks that is damn scary! Soon he and his crooked croonies will be running this Country.
