Slashing your annual profit forecast by 90%? Oh yeah, it's that bad for Panasonic.

The electronics company said it's being hurt by slow sales, a strong yen and the massive discounting taking place across the industry. Now, Panasonic is predicting it will only make a $316 million profit for the year ending in March -- down from its earlier estimate of $3.3 billion.

Panasonic lowered its sales forecast as well, saying that business conditions are deteriorating sharply. Analysts, after picking their jaws up from the floor, tore up their earlier ratings on the company.

"Even such a successful company as Panasonic can't weather this harsh economic environment," said one asset manager, according to Bloomberg.

Panasonic is trying to sell 11 million flat-panel televisions this year, but said it may miss that goal. The company is now in restructure mode, consolidating factories and closing money-losing operations, according to Reuters.

Well, duh...  NO ONE is safe AT ANY TIME.  The level of denial and greedy selfishness on this planet makes ME drop my jaw to the floor.

Whatever happened to "expect the unexpected?"  Whatever happened to using common sense and logic?!

Cody,

As a smal business owner it makes my blood boil when I here people say buy it at Wal-Mart or online it is cheaper. Good luck with getting any customer service if anything goes wrong with your flat screen. When something does and then you want to go visit your local specialty tv store for help,  I hope they tell you to go scratch and tell you to call TVland.com.

"Oh no, the sky is falling! we still made a huge profit just not a ridiculously huge profit like we thought. Quick, start firing everyone at the bottom of the company so we can make stock holders think we have a plan."  Downsizing is generally a cop out to addressing the real issues within a corporation.

"Panasonic misses profit goal by 90%"

When I first read the above headline — I thought, how on earth does a company miss its profit goal by 90% and still remain in business?  Then I read on and it hit me — free-enterprise; grossly over charging; — whatever the market will tolerate — and consumers seem to tolerate a lot these days.

Above, Rob, mentioned people purchasing items on-line and the difficulties with Customer Service — forget Consumer Service — what people do not realize is the amount of profit being made on-line.

For instance, Amazon.com charges as much as 3 times more than other places; yet the consumer continues shopping there.  Why?

I work for Amazon; they purchase a watch for $100 and then sell it for $500.  Amazon’s whole business began from making profit off of profit — the ultimate middle-middle man.

Amazon’s owner began the business from his garage — placing a web-page online offering books.  When some foolish consumer would order a book the owner would simply walk around the corner to his neighborhood “Barnes & Nobles” purchase the book at the normal everyday consumer retail price and then jack-up that price to sell to his customer — and the foolish consumers continue to buy it.  — What is Amazon really selling?  — Customer Service?  Bargain Prices?  Convenience?

Well their customer service is lousy; I have already disproved the bargain prices; that leaves convenience — and convenience can be found everywhere.

Who is to blame?  — Consumers for being so foolish as to allow a business to take gross advantage of them.  — It is time for the consumer to get up off their lazy as* and walk over to their own neighborhood ‘Barnes & Nobles’ and buy the book for themselves.

They missed profit goal.  But they still made a profit.  They did not LOSE 90%.

You have a job, completely Amazed poster??

The people of this nation are being robbed without a gun and it is unbelievable.

Federal,State & local govt. are in cahoots with developers and the small mum and

pop business are the ones being rung dry.Is it any wonder that the economy is

I can't even find a measly 10 per hour job and companies are crying because they didn't make billions of dollars?
