GM shares too risky for own employees?

General Motors shares are so risky that even its own employees are discouraged from buying them.

Workers have been blocked from buying GM shares through company 401(k) plans. The reason? GM's "financial difficulty," a spokeswoman told the Pensions & Investments newspaper.

GM wanted to register more shares of stock for 401(k) participants to buy. But the bank in charge of 401(k) plans refused to approve the move.

A spokeswoman said the bank must "focus exclusively on the best interests" of the 401(k) participants.

"It is almost too surreal for words," said CNBC analyst Paul Kedrosky. "Next up, I'm guessing, is that American Airlines employees won't be allowed to fly on AA planes -- too damn dangerous."

GM shares are up 17% today to $4.17, even though Goldman Sachs cut its auto sales outlook today.

This blog post falls under the "some folks just don't get it" category.  Instead of "even its own employees are discouraged from buying them" the correct phrase is "ESPECIALLY its own employees are discouraged from buying them".  If you think about it, you'll see why...

well, maybe you won't, or you wouldn't have written this post in the first place.  It breaks down like this:  if *I* buy GM stocks and the company goes belly-up, that money is gone but, well, at least I still have my job.  If a GM employee buys GM stocks and the company goes belly-up... do you see where this is going?

No good company is going to put it's employees well being at risk with risky investments. GM is doing the right thing...for once.

Also, for all of you individuals out there who don't believe the government should involve itself in shoring up retirement accounts, you obviously did not learn much from your high school government classes.

One of the primary and arguably the most important role of the government is to protect it's citizenry from just such things as retirement failures, to preserve life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This along with military protection are what the US government is all about.

It's the governments micro managing of all the other things in your life that you should be concerned about.

Making sure that the people who live inside the boarders of this country are going to be financially capable of supporting themselves in their golden years is in the best intrests of everyone.

The portion of the population that is going to benefit (nothing wrong with benefiting) the most will be the people who supply the services to the (would have been) retirees. You can bet there is going to be a bunch of them (retirees) at some point.

You surely don't want all these people working into their middle 70's just to survive. Thats a lot of jobs that will be unavailable for the new blood comming out of college. The only jobs that are left out there are the lower paying service industry jobs. Is that what you really want for your kids?

From the onset, this nation has always been a light house to those in need . Are you going to change the rules in the middle of the game just because it doesn't suit you at this time? Trust me, it will suit you down the road whether you realize it or not. Just hang on to your hats for the crazy ride. Try to be a part of the solution, not just the complaining part of the problem.

well, I was beginning to think GM was just down right irresponsible about everything. Most responsible companies do not advocate or even allow employees holding any significant amounts, if any at all, in their 401K accounts. Remember the Enron mess? If an employee wants to buy it's employer's stock, go for it on the open market. If you hold stock in one company in your 401K, you desreve to lose all you money anyway.

lol,no shi$$

GM loses money on all its passenger cars sold in US why do they do it? To keep jobs here, to keep the economy going, because they have faith that the American people will buy their product, they could build cars any place on earth.  People wake up ......when GM and Ford stop building cars here they will build them someplace else....government will not get smaller, the trillions that leave our economy will be made up by whom? (hint tax payer) When Toyota and Nissan get the benefit of no competition they will probably drop prices  right?  Sorry dummy the price will rise and the profits will go back to Japan.  Ignorant people talk about the plants they build here  GM and Ford have 100 major plants Toyota,Nissan, and Honda have 8 each.  The consumers forget which manufacturer sells most cars with 30 mpg highway....GM.  Tahoe gets better fuel economy than Sequoia, Ranger #1 in fuel economy in segment,Silverado #1 in segment.....when they are not available we will be more dependent on foreign oil!!!!  Nissan,Toyota, and Honda recently announce billions in spending on plants in JAPAN maybe the workers in midwest will move there.  Who gets to bailout pensions for retired workers    US taxpayers!  The Japanese companies only build plants in states they can get huge tax concessions from ($160000 per job ) So if you people wish to purchase Camry that is not recommended  by consumer reports or other cars from the Japanese who are killing our economy please keep your mouth shut in the future when you see the the results of your decision.  How is the economy doing today with you choosing to send your money over seas!!!!!
