Some ideas on how to bail out GM

Congress is still debating if, not when, the government should bail out General Motors. Newsweek's Robert Samuelson offers a reasonable look at how to bail out Detroit with a tough love approach.

One study estimates that 2.5 million jobs would be lost in the first year if GM declared bankruptcy. In a booming economy, a bankruptcy might be tolerable, even useful, Samuelson writes. But in this economy, a bankrupt GM wouldn't be able to get the loans it needs to move forward. And a bankruptcy will only make the nation's 6.5%-and-growing unemployment rate worse.

GM has dug itself into a very difficult hole, and now it wants a bailout. Here's what needs to happen for a bailout to succeed, according to Samuelson:

1. Cut labor costs. GM paid employees $71 an hour in wages plus fringe benefits last year, Samuelson writes. That compares with $47 for Toyota. At this rate, the bailout is going to become union welfare.

2. Carmakers need to write down the debts on their books. GM has $48 billion of debt, and it will be overburdened and remain on a path to bankruptcy if it doesn't do something about it. GM will have to shut down some of its assembly plants as well.

3. Congress needs to raise gas taxes. That will encourage people to buy fuel-efficient vehicles. Wild swings in fuel prices have crippled the industry, Samuelson writes.  Some people want to buy an SUV, but then gas spikes and they can't dump them soon enough. Raising gas taxes will spur automakers to adopt a consistent energy policy.

Let them go broke...........see how it feels

Bill Cunningham of 700 WLW has a novel idea.  the big three need to be prepared to distribute vouchers in the amounts of up to $5000 apiece toward the purchase of a new vehicle.  This may help stimulate vehicle production and put a competive price tag on the big three products.

This would be in addition to a revised, realistic salary structure that has been too long in coming.

Does a Democrat supported union really expect assistance from the Republicans?

The unions fought for the situation they are in.

Not much sympathy for their plight out here.

lets face it auto mfg is sussidised welfare.

every town around the cities that make them are ghettos.

the dream sit on welfare until your number is called then bam 40$ hr is yours.

no learned skill just wait it out take a number.wait for the call.

until then collect food stamps, free med, free lodging

once in even if they shut your plant down you get 2 years pay.

if lucky enough to still work its the dream job. like working for gov. all perks.

soon well all be collecting food stamps then what.?

unions will not cut demands.

I wish that most of you knew what you were talking about.  Wages for hourly employees at GM are not $71.00 an hour.  They are $27.00 for assembly and $31.00 for trades.  Our health care is Blue cross traditional.  If you have never seen the assembly line you might be surprised at how much they work.  I would like for some of you to include your occupation and what you make.  God forbid any of you work on Wall Street or in any type of financial institution.  These are real people supporting families.  The wages can escalate when a lot of overtime is worked but do you think that is a good trade off being in a factory 60 hours a week.  Please think before you write garbage.

pelosi in 10 minutes could fix it.

maybe they just need more money thrown at them.

or maybe just someone to talk nice to them.

i know just threaten to put a tax on any new vehicles starting jan 1

or restrict who can buy a suv. only those who make 250,000 or more can own a suv.

look at gun sales they threaten to ban something they sell like hot cakes.

our leaders are not the smartest people in the room.

its amazing how fast they can make decisions. they must really be smart.

i mean they came up with ethanol in like 5 minutes

barney frank is a chicken choker. i mean really could it be testifying in congress about auto ind fate is just a front to meet more of his toe tappering fudge packering buddies. and paulson can anyone say conflict of interest.

FIRST of all its a average pay of $71 a hour, which includes all the white collar workers as well who make more than the $71 hour ave while union workers make less, yes they still get paid very well but its the benefits of this employees and the outrageous pay for the higher ups, it is easy to say the union this and the union that while 1 % of the company just like American still accounts for 15% of all wages so try to do the MATH it needs to come from the top down not the bottom up alone – Don’t forget some of the workers are skilled laborers, electricians, CAD operators etc.

ok honestly anyone who works for a car mfg co.

how many days paid holiday?,sick days?,etc do you get? vacation?

paid meetings? be honest now

BAIL OUT OF AUTO COMPANIES A NECCESSITY. THE AUTOMOBILE AS WE KNOW IT BUILT THIS COUNTRY.THE JOB LINKS TO THIS INDUSTRY ARE ENORMOUS. THE AMERICAN AUTO COMPANIES NEED TO RETOOL FOR THE FUTURE WITH THE FOCUS BEING CNG AUTOS HYBRIDS AND OTHER FORMS OF FUEL EFFICIENT CARS. SUVS AND TRUCKS WHICH ARE THE DINASOURS THAT THE AMERICAN PUBLIC WANTS TO DRIVE NEED TO BE FASED OU ECCEPT FOR COMMERCIAL

APPLICATIONS. SAFETY INSPECTION LAWS NEED TO BE IMPLEMENTED AND

CONSERVATION NEEDS TO BE THE RULE OF THE DAY.

I like the idea of vouchers toward new purchases.  That would be 5 million vouchers of $5000 each to get to $25 billion.  Maybe a percentage would work better, like20% of the vehicle price up to a max of $5000 per vehicle.  Still better than a bailout.

The $71/hr. number does include benefits.  The problem is that so much of that goes to healthcare.
