Some ideas on how to bail out GM

Congress is still debating if, not when, the government should bail out General Motors. Newsweek's Robert Samuelson offers a reasonable look at how to bail out Detroit with a tough love approach.

One study estimates that 2.5 million jobs would be lost in the first year if GM declared bankruptcy. In a booming economy, a bankruptcy might be tolerable, even useful, Samuelson writes. But in this economy, a bankrupt GM wouldn't be able to get the loans it needs to move forward. And a bankruptcy will only make the nation's 6.5%-and-growing unemployment rate worse.

GM has dug itself into a very difficult hole, and now it wants a bailout. Here's what needs to happen for a bailout to succeed, according to Samuelson:

1. Cut labor costs. GM paid employees $71 an hour in wages plus fringe benefits last year, Samuelson writes. That compares with $47 for Toyota. At this rate, the bailout is going to become union welfare.

2. Carmakers need to write down the debts on their books. GM has $48 billion of debt, and it will be overburdened and remain on a path to bankruptcy if it doesn't do something about it. GM will have to shut down some of its assembly plants as well.

3. Congress needs to raise gas taxes. That will encourage people to buy fuel-efficient vehicles. Wild swings in fuel prices have crippled the industry, Samuelson writes.  Some people want to buy an SUV, but then gas spikes and they can't dump them soon enough. Raising gas taxes will spur automakers to adopt a consistent energy policy.

It has taken years for American Enterprise and its citizen support to get into this mess and it's going to be long and painful for all of us in obtaining a solution.  We have been spoiled by our standard of living and the average person today does not really grasp the meaining of "Sacrifice" unless you happen to be unemployed.  The all Mighty Dollar has been the drving force--GREED has prevailed! Uncle Sam can not keep printing money for bailout when it is broke.  Are we forgetting about the National Debt and what that really means to our future generations of childeren and grandchildren?  Does the word "Enablement" mean anything to anyone?  We need a government to govern by the people and for the people but the people need to stewart Congress to 'geterdunn'.  It is time for Congress to do what we sent them there to do and stop its blank check attitude as a universal resolve.  Peole fund the government and not the other way around! Hello, anyone listening? America's desire for and catering to "Bigness" had to stop! I never thought I would live to see a true "Depression" but folks, it is here.  We can tighten our belts and with astute leadership and leadership accountability-get out of this mess.  Yes, it means sacrifice and hardship for many but America's history is in our favor. When the going gets tough, America gets going!  And as a believer I close with, " GOD WILL BLESS AMERICA PROVIDED WE ARE TRULY HONORING HIM."

Let the oil companies   bail them out.

Bailing out a private company which has been building horse buggies in the world of fuel efficient cars is NOT an option. The management of those companies lived high on the hog while contributing absolutely no constructive and innovative ideas for far too long. Yes, there will be a lot of unfortunate souls who will pay for the mistakes of management, but that is the rule of business. A bail out will not change the decline of an industry which builds far too many cars for a market that does not exist. As with forest fires, new healthy plants will take hold and prosper.

First off all, round up all members of congress and the senate. Send them all to jail. Second, replace them all with beer drinking americans, then sit down with these companies that want bail outs. The Big Three, have to get contract reductions from the union. If the unions don't want to, then, BOOM, your out of business. Tough love for corporate america. Most of us live this way, so it's time that business lives that way. I have no problem with folks making as much as they can. I don't believe in taking from the rich and giving to the lazy. But i do believe, if your company is a sinking ship, don't just sit there waiting for someone to save you.

First off I do not make 30 per hour, but I do not begrudge people who do.

How can you whine about auto workers making 70 bucks an hour...yet say nothing about a lawyer who makes over 500?

Anybody had their teeth worked on lately??

Let them follow the airlines; Bankruptcy,  Chap 11; re-organize with new, (and much more realistic) union contracts.   Airlines BK proved that it is not the end of the world.   Auto Industry is not the holy grail that it wants the US citizen to believe.  Honda/Toyota/Hyundai/MBZ and  VW proved that.  Any bailout is merely a bandaid and will only prolong the agony, (of defeat). It does not "cure" anything. GM/Ford are the only ones left anyway and they should not be allowed to prove that failure is still acceptable.

Yes, we do need smaller, fuel effeciant cars, in the meantime FREEZE gas prices where they are $1.50 per gallon....Big oil should work with the government before the whole world is bankrupt....Keep it there until we get repositioned!!

In reading through the comments posted, it appears that most of us understand what needs to be done. Why is it, our representatives and senators don't seem to get it? Mine told me most of his constituents were against the bailouts in the first place but he "HAD to vote with his colleagues!"  Wow! I didn't realize he was elected by them.

Maybe we should all wise up and in 2 years sweep out the House of Representatives and try it with some folks that have fresh ideas that aren't escewed with all of the lobby, party and all the other stuff that most of us would like to be legislated OUT of government.
