Chrysler gives bonuses, asks for bailout

Chrysler is asking the government for a bailout. It's laying off employees and cutting salaries. It's a company in trouble.

Oh yeah, it's also paying $30 million in bonuses to dozens of top executives.

That's the end result of a poorly-timed plan to keep Chrysler together as it was being sold. The company didn't want top executives to leave during the transition, so it promised big money for people who stuck around. Now, Chrysler is asking the government for billions of dollars in aid while it writes million-dollar bonus checks out to A-list employees. How's that for awkward?

In Chrysler's defense, this bonus plan was created in April of 2007. The company had no idea that its industry was headed for collapse, or that the executives it was desperate to keep might have a hard time finding employment at a Jiffy Lube at this point.

The bonuses are going to be another sticking point in Chrysler's request for government aid. The industry is asking for $25 billion in low-cost government loans. Chrysler is a private company, and may be asked to hand over a lot of information about its finances and how it handles its money. That includes information on those controversial bonuses.

Bonuses are under fire at other carmakers. Ford has cut some merit raises and bonuses for next year. The company is quickly running out of money, and is slashing its spending.

Executives from Chrysler, Ford and GM are headed to Congress next week to make their case for $25 billion in aid. The bonus numbers will quickly become a central point of the conversation, and deservedly so.

As a private company, Chrysler can do whatever it wants when it comes to compensating its executives. But a private company asking for a government bailout cannot. Better brush up on those resumes, boys, because the good times are coming to an end.

Obviously the bonus was not earned as they are in a "mess"....but the rich get richer and the poor get poorer and we the middle class pay for it all....

Slap in the face to taxpayers! Let them sink!

I dont't think we should bail out any company. When the local mom&pop stores run out of money, they just close the doors.  These major companies should do the same.

I agree with Jerry & Vern.  Instead of given the top execs bonuses, give the buyer a discount and that would allow them to stay working and the company would become more stable.

Don't give them a penny! If they'd have left without the bonus plan then it shows they don't care about the company - only themselves! Plus why are they worth keeping or paying bonuses to? If they were any good and worth keeping, the company wouldn't be in trouble...

No bailout unless those bonus's are retracted.   This is getting ridiculous already saying they will lose these people unless they pay them bonus's.  Where are they gonna go - to the two competitors who are in the same sinking boat??

I just don't get it.  Are not bonus's given if you do a good job vrs the company tanking??

Fire them and put some people in charge who are loyal to the company..

I agree with Jerry. How irresponsible can the Goverment be? How about also giving money to millions of responsible and by the book citizens? I worked hard and saved my money, cut corners when I had to, to be debt free while more than half the country was living beyond their means including these big corporations and now my tax money is going to pay for their lavishness. Something is wrong with the picture here guys! CREATE JOBS RATHER THAN HANDOUTS!

They can't be paid these dollars. If the company goes bankrupt then that is a function of management---not reacting. Bob Nardelli was a failure at  Home Depot, who thinks he'll do better at Chrysler. Let them sink or swim with the rest of the market.

oh yeah. no one realized in april 2007 that there might be a slight problem here. or better yet the problem only began to landslide after april 2007 and big bonuses

This is the same company that hired Nardell (who was fired by Home depot) to turn this company around. Now that is real foreward thinking.
