Why holiday may be 'Wal-Mart Christmas'

Don't tell Wal-Mart about the recession: the retailer just posted sales growth of 2.2% as it captured trade-down customer traffic. CEO H. Lee Scott Jr. is downright cocky, telling a recent meeting of investors and analysts that in his mind "there is no doubt this is Wal-Mart time."

The company plans to aggressively cut toy prices over the coming weeks, turning the upcoming holiday in what Deutsche Bank analyst Dill Dreher calls "a Wal-Mart Christmas."

Meanwhile other retailers are reporting some of the worst monthly sales figures in decades. What makes Wal-Mart so special?

With consumer confidence plunging to an all-time low, credit availability drying up, and unemployment on the rise, it's no surprise that even previously buoyant retailers like Costco are hurting. Same-store sales fell 1% at the warehouse club, its worst performance since tracking started in 1997. Discount retailer Target is also struggling to make its "cheap-chic" merchandising strategy work with embattled consumers looking for hard discounts. Same-store sales fell 4.8% versus an expected decrease of 2.8%.

For now, the retailing behemoth that Sam Walton built is perfectly positioned to steal market share in this environment. A survey of 1,000 shoppers by IRI found that people are dramatically changing their buying habits to stretch each dollar. For example, roughly half of the respondents are making a conscious effort to make cleaning and personal care products last longer. Many are also foregoing professional services from haircuts to doctor visits.

This, combined with what we've already learned about increased private label purchases, less eating out, and more dependence on the paycheck cycle, points to an increasingly desperate consumer. As the holiday approaches, Wal-Mart's ability to extend purchasing power will become more and more appreciated by both shoppers and investors.

I have worked at Wal-Mart for 18 years and all this stuff about low wages, non medical benifits, etc it a bunch of bunk. I am proud to work there and the benefits are better then most retail places. For those of you who are or have not worked in retail , you simply don't know anything.

I like Walmart. The other day I was at Staples looking at a Y cable to connect my mp3 player to my car stereo. They had 2, one was $12.96 and the other was $14.95. I said to my self, I'll check at Walmart, which had a Belkin cable for $4.95.

I've dealt with " Unionized Employees " at the Big Three for 20 yrs as a truck driver delivering parts to their auto plants. I could never understand why they treated us so badly and acted so lazy when it came time for them to do their job and get us unloaded / reloaded so we can do our jobs too. They make decent money and have good benefits and still act like " spoiled brats". I hate to admit it, but i am so glad that alot of them are losing their jobs ! They don't deserve the privilege to work and earn money. They forgot what they were hired as... WORKERS ! You don't sit around past break time, smoking, eating, reading the paper, chatting on cellphones and the like when your Company just paid big money for an expedite of SHUTDOWN PARTS to be unloaded that i drove all day and nite, only to make me wait hours to offload and we then in return charge your Company $ 100+  an hour in detention time ! YOU GUYS BANKRUPTED YOUR OWN JOBS WITH THE HELP OF YOUR UNIONS WHO BACKED UP YOUR CHILDISH ANTICS !!! I AM GLAD YOU WILL SEE WHAT IT MEANS TO BE OUT HERE WITHOUT THE UNIONS ANYMORE AND TO BE JUDGED BY THE MERITS OF YOUR LABOR !!! goodluck...you will need it !

B.T.W. Honda, Toyota and Nissan auto plants which are non-union, ALWAYS TREATS US WITH RESPECT,  HAVE VERY CLEAN BREAK ROOMS / BATHROOMS AND UNLOADED US WITHIN 15-30 MINUTES EVERYTIME !!! I HOLD THOSE COMPANIES IN HIGH REGARD AND WOULDN'T THINK TWICE ABOUT DOING BUSINESS WITH THEM ( BUYING A CAR ) !!! A COMPANY'S EMPLOYEES ARE IT'S " GOODWILL AMBASSADORS " TO EVERYONE THEY COME IN CONTACT WITH AT THE COMPANY... INCLUDING TRUCK DRIVERS !!! WE HAVE FRIENDS THAT WE RECOMMEND BASED ON OUR DEALINGS WITH A PARTICULAR MANUFACTURER !

Everyone here is avoiding the point, Wal Mart ia a cheap store hands down.  They suck the business away from other stores and don't stop to think about jobs lost.  They have the capability to shut down targets and other surrounding stores due to cheap prices.  Yes the are cheap but the Quality of the clothes suck.  I would spend the extra 5$ on a pair of jeans at the mall then buy clothes there.  I am sick of Wal Mart trying to build all over my town like we want getto people in our NEW neighborhood.  Wal Mart attracts the getto and tastless part of town.  My opinoin is be done with this trash of a store.  Going there is like going to a zoo to my tacky people and big mouths, and the employees are not helpful or nice tried the store once and never went back.

My thought is basic. If you do not like Walmart DON'T shop there. For those of us who do, there is nothing that can be said on the board that will alter that. I personally find Walmart to be an asset to anyone who is either on a budget or simply wishes to stretch their buying dollars. This article was not about Unions or Medical Benefits or Pay Wages. It is about Walmarts ability to offer same or comparable products at a reduced price in todays economy.

Wal Mart Special, Incomming...

Vickki (or should it be VicKKKi?)-

All your talk about 'getto' (the spelling is ghetto, by the way) and tasteless people is very telling.

I hope Obama's tax plan hits you where it hurts.

I believe that unions do serve a purpose in certain industries. As far as the few who made walmart out to be so great, I'd love to know what one you worked at. Here in upstate NY, the local walmarts treat their employees like crap. And the benefits are not nearly as generous as some on here have said. Prices? Forget about it! It took me a few years after I stopped working for them to realize that their  prices, especially in the last few years are higher than most local grocers or dept stores. The quality of the merchandise is not great either. I love a bargain, but theirs are NOT bargains anymore. As forthe snob who doesn't think someone with a high school education is worth $50,000- WHY NOT?!! If they are smart, and hard working, why the hell not? Part of the problem in this country  is that your everyday bluecollar worker is looked down upon, and underpaid, even though they are the backbone of this country. I have seen many dumb@sses over the years with degrees.  (And no, I no longer do retail, and yes, I am college educated.) The whole system is messed up.
