If Detroit goes down, so do 3 million jobs

Every industry has its blue-chip think tank. In the case of cars it is the Center for Automotive Research, which has come out with a new and disturbing study.

Based on forecasts which look at The Big Three, the foreign competition making cars in the U.S., auto parts companies, and other related industries, a collapse of the U.S. auto industry would cost three million jobs. U.S. personal income would drop almost $400 billion over three years.

If only half of Detroit's capacity was compromised, the number of jobs lost would still be over two million when the ripple effects to other parts of the economy are taken into account.

In the worst case, the government would lose over $150 billion in 2009, 2010 and 2011. If those numbers are right, it leaves Congress and the administration one question: how much are they willing to spend to keep all that tax income.

.I can,t believe how ignorant are goverment is. To even consider screwing Detroit and think things will just fix themselfs is scary. If Detroit goes down so will this country with the world to follow. Whats the big deal loaning money ? They want to pay it back unlike AIG and Fanny Mae. Lets gamble that this will not effect are ailing economy anymore. Do people really believe that Detroit has no ties to the rest of us. And why does everybody say there cars are crap, there not! JD Powers rates some as good or better than Toyota. I drive a cheapo Pontiac with 175000 miles. And by the way, try repairing a used Jap car you will pay up the ass. People cannot get the Big 3 past from there memories. They also produce more gas efficient vehicles tnan Honda and Toyota. Oh what about all thoses gas guzzle trucks? Yeah they have them but theres get better gas mileage than Japan trucks. What is wrong with Americans do we hate Detroit that much? If history repeats itself this should be a no brainer, how we all forget. In the past recessions Detroit is the first to go in and the first to come out, with the rest of country to follow. It should also be mention are manufacturing base is in this city,God forbid another world  war,I guess will just buy war machinary from Japan!!!!
