Delta becomes the world's largest airline

Say goodbye to another airline, now that the Justice Department has approved Delta's $2.6 billion purchase of Northwest Airlines. And that's not a bad thing, given the miserable state of the airline industry these days.

The merger will produce the world's largest airline, which will continue to be called Delta. Northwest shareholders will get 1.25 Delta shares for each share they own in the all-stock deal.

Even though the companies have been meticulously planning the marriage, it'll still take up to three years to integrate them. There will be a bit of culture clash at first, particularly since Delta is mostly non-union (except for its pilots) and Northwest is unionized.

Former Delta workers bemoaned what's happened to their company, [readmore] telling one paper that Delta used to be a family-oriented place that people stayed at forever. "It took an act of Congress to get hired and an act of God to get fired," said one former executive.

But the world's largest airline will have to be more disciplined than that, particularly with the spiraling economy. Oil prices have skyrocketed, and consumers and businesses are cutting back on travel expenses. Even with the best of planning, merging two giants in these tough times will be a major challenge.

The combined company will have $35 billion in sales, 800 planes and 75,000 employees, according to the Wall Street Journal.

The merger was widely expected. The airlines didn't overlap many routes, so there weren't huge antitrust concerns.

The share prices of both companies didn't move much today. Delta dropped 2% to close at $7.99, and Northwest rose 1% to close at $9.90. Northwest shares are up 3% in after-hours trading, however.

Now we get the under- maintained planes of Delta to fly. I liked Northwest as maintance was good. Never flew Delta because I felt the planes did not always

have proper maintance, esp the older ones.

GREAT FOR MEMPHIS ALSO, WE HAVE A N.W. HUB HERE, NOW SOUTHWEST CAN MOVE IN AND WE CAN FLY A LITTLE CHEAPER. BUT LIKE BILL I PERFER TO DRIVE OR TAKE A TRAIN. THESE AIRLINES PACK THEIR CUSTOMERS IN LIKE SARDINES!!!

This is all well and good for the public but the only employees that have been spoken about is the pilots. As a northwest flight attendant i just want to know where that leaves me and my job. With no union i think i am about to get screwed out of a job.

to the delta fa's, old delta took care of you this is not the old delta.it's the old nwa mangement.so if you think they will take care of you keep thinking that as they screw you over and over again.they only think of one person and it's not you.we need a union to protect us from them.

Oh boy, Mr. Ingraham before you go shooting your mouth off get your facts straight. We do not charge for the first bag only the second bag and we are not bankrupt.  I have been a proud DL employee for 15 yrs, if you want the best, you pay for the best. Wait and see, DL and NW will take this airline not only being the biggest in the world but the best as well. I have no doubts in my company!

Ron, your hype about MAINTENANCE lacks little merit when you can't even spell the word correct. You must be one of those replacement workers Northworst hired during the strike in 2005.

Lose-Lose situation for customers.  These two airlines are the worst in the industry, and now they can join forces to make sure that customers are treated even worse.  The bigger they are, the harder they fall, is the best thing that can happen out of this merger.  Have the airlines thouight that maybe if they raised prices and offered improved service, they might actually increase their business??  That would be too simple.

What's new, big business getting all the breaks. Lost luggage, late flights, changing flights after tix purchas with no options, poor customer service along with high ticket prices!! Welcome Northwest, I supppose that's a step up for your company!! Thank God the stock and the stability of SOUTHWEST AIRLINES still fly's high.

DON'T ANYONE OUT THERE OWN SIRI/XM STOCK?????????????  COME ON NOW, SPEAK UP.  ALL MERGES TAKE 18 MONTHS, DON'T THEY????????????????  DON'T ALL COMPANY'S HAVE TO BE TREATED ALIKE???????????????  LET'S BE FAIR ABOUT IT.

Simple note to Delta,

Please incorporate Northwest's policy of not providing peanut products on all flights.  I have never heard of anyone canceling a flight on the other carriers because they no longer serve peanut products, but I know the minimum reaction for my son will be throwing up even with just a sniff of a peanut.  Worse, if he stops breathing his life could be in danger and you know everyone's schedule on that flight will be severely impacted.  It just doesn't make sense to serve peanut products.
