Gates and Seinfeld make ad debut

Microsoft is paying Jerry Seinfeld $10 million to help promote its Windows operating system. The first one is out (I've included a link below), and you can decide for yourself if it was worth it.

The ad has some cute moments, and it may be considered effective in that it has a lot of people talking today. Is it funny? No. Will it help sell Windows? No.

Microsoft calls it an "icebreaker" to reintroduce itself to viewers. This one wasn't intended to sell Windows. Future ads will use Seinfeld to get deeper into the Windows story.

I've seen plenty of laugh-out-loud videos from Microsoft, and I know the company is capable of more. Perhaps this was an intentionally soft beginning?

Here's what others are saying about the spot:

Between the Lines: "Maybe I’m off base here but I think if Microsoft is trying to engage people with this ad, it has failed miserably. I even watched it several times, just to make sure I didn’t miss something."

Kara Swisher: "It feels a lot like the frequent and excellent Microsoft internal spoof videos Gates does with various celebs. I have always liked them a lot and I like this one too, as it is quirkily charming (or is it charmingly quirky?)."

TechCrunch: "These ads can’t be all tech or they’ll lose the audience. But I can’t imagine this will sell software, either."

Silicon Alley Insider: "As commenters rightly point out, the brand ad is getting its primary job done -- getting people to talk about Microsoft. And since many people think it's "cute," even if not laugh-out-loud funny, hard to see that as a bad thing."

Disclosures: I don't own shares of any companies mentioned in this post. And while Microsoft owns this blog, Microsoft does not control, censor or otherwise have any editorial influence over what I write.

I was very disappointed with this attempt at advertisement.  It fell flat and I found it uninteresting.  Next time it comes on I will probably change the channel.

It is really too bad because I am a big Jerry Seinfeld fan.

seriously.  lame.  you will never meet a person who is passionate about a windows based operating system.. but meet a mac user and they'll talk about it like it's their child, they might even have photos.

I told ya - they shoulda used a real comedian: http://tinyurl.com/5c3r6y

I like this ad.  It is hilarious and I am looking forward to the next one!!  I would rather watch Bill and Jerry that 2 little microschips talk to each other and sleep.

I don't get the add at all...I was confused and had no idea how it would sell their product

a product is perfect not when there is nothing left to add but when there is nothing left to take away, I do beleive there is NOTHING left here to take away therefor PERFECTION.

This add is designed to replace the MICROSOFT = DARTH VADER belief with something more friendly by attempting to develop a close and personal relationship between the company and you...like a friend...who doesn't shop for shoes? It does work, but microsoft is still guilty, in my opinion, of stifling innovation although google is the real nemesis crushing (or buying) small start-ups into oblivion. But we can't fault the companies for taking every opportunity that is what good companies do. I hope for better regulation.

Wouldn't it be nice if they asked people what they like and don't like about their product instead? Nah! too easy, better to spend millions on an expensive yet opaque ad.

Remember when Windows cost less than $100, came in 2 flavors and an add-on if you needed it? Remember when Windows could be loaded and configured in 20 minutes?

Remember when you could get product support? You didn't have to fight through a Kafkaesque auto attendant?

That company needs to be broken into 2 or three pieces so they can feel competition again. So they can feel the fear of failure at their back if they don't keep asking and running hard to succeed.

They are lazy and complacent.

They take their advice from a mirror in an echo chamber.

They are following the well worn path of IBM and AT&T of the late 70's.

How sad.

Tedious

Long & TEDIUS

Boring & TEDIOUS !!!

Redundantly TEDIOUS

I think everyone that likes this commercial just likes rich individuals.  I thought it was lame and did nothing for advertising a product.  Confused.
