Is Dell PC 'best friend' material?

Dell describes its new mini PC, which debuts today, as "your new best friend." Sure, if I wanted a best friend that was shallow, can't remember much and dies after three hours. But I'm not the target market here.

Dell is casting the Inspiron Mini 9 as an on-the-road device for teens, tweens and travelers. The 2.28-pound computer is good for viewing Web sites, sending instant messages, blogging and uploading pictures, the company says. It costs $399 or $449, depending on the features you want.

That's a little pricey for what you get, or, rather, for what you don't get. The cheaper version only has an 8GB hard drive (16GB for the other one). And experts estimate battery life at just three hours. (A $349 version isn't available yet, but you can pre-order it).

Dell is careful to say that the computer is good for streaming content and enjoying online music, videos and games. In other words, you won't be able to put much in storage. This PC isn't meant to hold movies or music. It's an on-the-run, drop-in-and-chat device.

Which makes me wonder, who exactly would befriend the Inspiron Mini 9? Teens and tweens have a great chat/Web device: a cell phone. And a Dell PC, well, that's not the coolest thing to carry around anyway. Business travelers might use it, perhaps. I think the ideal audience here is college students who are comfortable with storing documents and pictures online (you get 2GB of free remote storage space).

Still, there is great potential for this class of mini-notebooks. Research firm Gartner estimates that 5.2 million units will be shipped by the end of this year and 8 million by the end of 2009. Shipments could reach 50 million by 2012.

Dell doesn't want to miss that boat. But in the bigger picture, this is another move by the company to reinvent itself. The company no longer wants to be the build-your-own-PC retailer of years past. Now, it's about getting into Wal-Mart and Best Buy with interesting and affordable products.

The problem is the Inspiron Mini 9 isn't very interesting or affordable.

I've recently had to deal with Dell to repair an old, out-of-warranty Dimension desktop.  They were very helpful and I had no problems acquiring the parts that I needed and returning what I didn't.

You will unfortunately find difficult people with any computer company (Don't get me started with Apple/iTunes.), the secret is to be very direct and calm when dealing with techs.

First of all the features dell offer , you can get there features and more with other brands at a cheaper price , in my opinion dell is more expensive than other pcs and the battery life sucks on its laptops.

No computer company has great customer service - all of them require patience and persistence on your part.  I'm on my second Dell in 1 year...my first one set a record for most techincal support calls in one year: 4 mother boards, two video cards, 4 mousepads, 2 adaptors, and a battery upgrade!  Fortunately, thanks to my patience, Dell replaced it with an upgrade, and no problems so far after 1 month.  I'm not a Dell hater, but you do need patience when dealing with them.  Your patience will pay off...they stand behind their product.  As for this new item: someone out there will want it in the spoiled US of A where we are constantly scrambling for the next cool gadget.  I wouldn't buy it.

I think this is a great product for the traveler / e-mailer. I have owned Dell computers for several years and still own them. I work on a Dell everyday and in an office full of Dell computers. I purchased a laptop and the keyboard quit working, I called technical support once, and they had it replaced within three days total including shipping. Five years running on my laptop, no problems, and still get three to four hours of battery life! Dell has always been a good customizable robust computer incorporating the latest in technology. Dell has always had a great price. Americans fat incomes, labor laws, and unions have pushed companies out of the country in order to compete to bring the user the best price. The US government allows this uneven-unjust trade to exist and we allow the government to do so. What do you expect, your technical support is probably a five year old worked fourteen hours a day for pennies on the dollar! Hey old guy, learn something new! If the user wasn’t so computer illiterate we wouldn’t even need a technical support. Users stupidity “Hello, my icon disappeared and I can’t log on to the Internet” has driven the cost of the product up. I’m personally tired of paying for technical support I don’t use. Keep in mind, most computers are made up of the same or similar components, packaged and sold with the different distributors name affixed on the front. Most of the time it’s not even a Dell component your having issues with it’s a drive, card, memory, operating system made by someone else. Give Dell a break; they do an awesome job competing in this tuff market.

I have had 3 Dell's and they start out great but within 6 months they are junk and for there customer service sucks. I think they have a bunch of morons working for them. No more dells for me

Moron user = lousy input = lousy output = moron user to assume its junk...

DELL ISNT TO FAR AWAY FROM HP !! USED TO BUY DELL BUT NOT NOMORE THEN I BOUGHT HP  LOTs Of PROdUCTS  NOW EVEN HP IS GETTING BAD  WERE DOES A PERSON GO FROM HERE????
