Is Dell PC 'best friend' material?

Dell describes its new mini PC, which debuts today, as "your new best friend." Sure, if I wanted a best friend that was shallow, can't remember much and dies after three hours. But I'm not the target market here.

Dell is casting the Inspiron Mini 9 as an on-the-road device for teens, tweens and travelers. The 2.28-pound computer is good for viewing Web sites, sending instant messages, blogging and uploading pictures, the company says. It costs $399 or $449, depending on the features you want.

That's a little pricey for what you get, or, rather, for what you don't get. The cheaper version only has an 8GB hard drive (16GB for the other one). And experts estimate battery life at just three hours. (A $349 version isn't available yet, but you can pre-order it).

Dell is careful to say that the computer is good for streaming content and enjoying online music, videos and games. In other words, you won't be able to put much in storage. This PC isn't meant to hold movies or music. It's an on-the-run, drop-in-and-chat device.

Which makes me wonder, who exactly would befriend the Inspiron Mini 9? Teens and tweens have a great chat/Web device: a cell phone. And a Dell PC, well, that's not the coolest thing to carry around anyway. Business travelers might use it, perhaps. I think the ideal audience here is college students who are comfortable with storing documents and pictures online (you get 2GB of free remote storage space).

Still, there is great potential for this class of mini-notebooks. Research firm Gartner estimates that 5.2 million units will be shipped by the end of this year and 8 million by the end of 2009. Shipments could reach 50 million by 2012.

Dell doesn't want to miss that boat. But in the bigger picture, this is another move by the company to reinvent itself. The company no longer wants to be the build-your-own-PC retailer of years past. Now, it's about getting into Wal-Mart and Best Buy with interesting and affordable products.

The problem is the Inspiron Mini 9 isn't very interesting or affordable.

just a note.. this kind of machine is actually been sold under asus as the eeepc for a while now and the price is about the same.. 16GB isn't much but it is solid state.. for those that don't get that it means no moving parts.. hence the number one reason why hdd are replaced in laptops.. moving parts cause problems. if you are the kind who wants to lug around something to the cottage or to a friends or frankly anywhere you can get a internet signal, am the chatter or want to ensure the tween isn't downloading too much pirated stuff then hey this is your machine. xp home with 1GB is more than suitable for the surfing experience and what this machine is designed to do.. it isn't designed to be your desktop replacement.. just your coffee shop tablemate. I have owned one of these as a eeepc for a while and at 2 lbs it may not be able to call my friend like an iphone but i got skype for that anyways.. i need something small enough to get my email and to travel with so that I am not using the friends machine when I am sleeping over.. yeah the battery isn't great but if you tweak down the features of xp you can get a lot more juice out of it.

So if you want more of a companion then this isn't such a bad buy.. it isn't your primary toy but it sure beats the 286SX I lugged around many years ago.

why would "not a ell" buy 4 dells in the last 3 years...must be a retard

Dell has improved?- Dell hates the people who use its PCs.  The absolutely worse customer service around.  I bought a Dell on the reseller market and it is now a doorstop because I could not get any help at all  -   I could prove I had a valid COA, but I in effect would have to prove that the guy I bought the Dell from did not steal it - ridiculous! The experience convinced me to never buy a Dell and I have told my husband to convert our PCs (doorstop included)  to Linux.

$449 for a mini-notebook with 16GB of HDD?? I bought an Acer Aspire 3680 from CircuitCity less than a year ago for $499 with a $50 rebate ($449 net) and a FREE printer and FREE wireless router (after rebates, which I had no issues claiming) - all for $449. I have a 80GB HDD, 512MB RAM (which I upgraded to 2GB for less than $60) so why the heck should I buy this thing from Dell??

I am now running Windows Vista Ultimate and it works like a charm. Any one who does a little bit of research before buying a laptop will find many reasons to not buy the very 'affordable' Inspiron Mini. The author is absolutely right: it is neither interesting nor affordable.

To touch on what another poster said... Dell Enterprise is excellent, us based tech support immeidate (well almost) replacement of parts...

Home support... Not so good, All india based... When did it become ok to not speak english, yet you deal with almost all english speaking clients...

I wonder if india water and power employes people that dont speak the correct language?

forget dell, get an HP and move on

Dell is dead

Great! I just bought a Dell home pc.  I had an off-brand before and have trouble after trouble. I've got QWEST for Internet and none of them can speak english. Now I'm really scared and I don't even have the laptop yet!

Dell is certainly thinking a bit out of the box these days. I am a Dell warranty technician and as far as everyone who complains about Dell and their support, wake up HP isn't much better. I actually do work for both and on site service isnt standard with HP's like it is with Dell. NONE OF THEM SPEAK ENGLISH! Also, one advantage as a shop owner is I can offer to troubleshoot and take care of any warranty repairs on your Dell at a $15 per instance. Not a bad rate to not have to worry about it eh? Very popular with my regulars...

I got to say that I love dell

HP and Compaq have given me nothing but problems. 3 Compaq's , all died/ need to be reformatted/ were crap. One Dell running XP, and no problems ever!

Yay Dell! Yay XP!

Dell is a completely crappy company.

1. They no longer offer XP

2.  They help no one who tries to switch to it

3.  Their customer service is absolutely terrible

4.  The PC's do not last long.

I'd go with Toshiba for laptop's and HP for Desktops
