Steve Jobs' demise greatly exaggerated

It's a well-known secret that news organizations write obituaries of famous people before they're dead. Better to have a well-written and thorough obituary ready to go instead of rushing something together at the last moment.

But every so often, someone along the chain screws up and hits the "publish" button early. It happened with writeups about Mark Twain, Bob Hope and Pope John Paul II. And Wednesday, it happened to Apple CEO Steve Jobs.

Jobs "helped make personal computers as easy to use as telephones, changed the way animated films are made, persuaded consumers to tune into digital music and refashioned the mobile phone," according to a premature obituary published by Bloomberg News.

Bloomberg deleted the article, saying that it was accidentally published after a reporter had made a routine update. A little embarrassing for Bloomberg, but really no big deal. And it should have blown over quickly.

But for some reason, the-obit-that-wasn't has become a hot topic of conversation in the tech world today. Perhaps that's because of recent concerns over Jobs' health, which erupted after he appeared publicly looking quite thin, on the verge of looking gaunt. Or Apple's history of secrecy, even over the performance of the new version of the iPhone.

Maybe seeing the obituary is reviving an Apple investor's worst fear: That this man, one of the most famous and most valuable CEOs in history, is not going to be around forever.

Luckily, Apple shares seemed unaffected Thursday. The stock closed down 0.5% to $173.74.

Steve Jobs is alive. Now can we all move on?

Comments

Jobs only want to affect few people in his life time. Why can he think of puting his inventions into every home just like Bill Gate is doing? I don't pray for him to die now, but he should try to affect the lives of more people. Can he still change?

Who is Steve Jobs anyway?

Acctually thin is not always a good sign.  Drinking too much or making yourself throw up can make you thin.

To each man has been given a span of life by the Almighty.  Let every man fulfill the purposes of God while on this earth.  Have you?  Steve did the best with what he had been given, bless him for that.

I worked for Steve when he was running NeXT Software in Redwood City.  The guy has always been intense.  He works hard, maybe too hard.  He's had his hand in just about everything and, yes, maybe he's involved himself in too much.  Steve, time for you to retire, for good.  Why aren't you mentoring the next generation of Phenoms?  I've never owned a Mac (sorry, Steve) and never will, but I'm glad there's something out there to keep Microsoft, Dell, IBM, and the like, on it's toes.

Fredo is dead to me.....

I think people should come into the light. what exactly has steve jobs done for me? other than making 300 dollar ipods and 500 dollar phones that i have to buy in order to keep up with the jones'. when jobs hands me a check for a million or helps to build the foundations of a third world country then he can be a 'great guy'.

Shutup and get back to work.

Get Well Soon,

Many people in the Public do not realize the fact that within the Civilian world, Leaders are very rare, and Managers (paper pushers, bean counters, lawyers) are the norm and many Civilians do not even know the difference.

Which would make it almost impossible to find and train a replacement.  Having experience as both US Military Officer and as a Apple Representative (built one of the first Apple Stores within a Store, Computer City, 1993, and later CompUSA, 1998.) this is very clear to me, that you are irreplaceable as a Leader (the norm in the US Military).  It is also clear the you do know that there are many "I"s in real Teams: Innovation, Ingenuity, Intelligence, Iniative, Involvement, Individuality, etc. unlike that non realistic example of a Sports Team that the most expensive player makes or breaks the Sports Team.

Some may see you and Steven Wozinak as creative driving force behind Apple Computers, you are, with your creative vision of the future of what Apple and Personal Computers must become.  I have seen this since the 1970s.

Again Get Well Soon, enjoy being with your family.

Sincerly,

David K. Nakamura
