Microsoft's new marketing weapon: Seinfeld

Microsoft has been pretty quiet while Apple waged war with its "I'm a Mac" ads. Now it's firing back by paying Jerry Seinfeld $10 million to star in its own ads. But is Seinfeld the right pitch man?

Microsoft would look silly if it tried to provide a young, hip counterattack to Apple's young, hip Mac guy (the actor Justin Long). But, as Silicon Alley Insider points out, being cool has never been part of Microsoft's success formula. Seinfeld appeals mainly to old fogies, says SAI. (Bill Gates is also appearing in the commercials.) Perhaps old fogies are the target audience here?

The market didn't respond much to the Seinfeld announcement; Microsoft shares are down just slightly to $27.07.

Update: Now I'm wondering, who would have been a better pitch man? I nominate Will Ferrell. Who would you pick?

Here's what others are saying about the news:

Mark Evans: "The $64,000 (or $10-million) question is whether Seinfeld can help make Microsoft cooler or, at least, less uncool than it is now compared with Apple. Maybe. At the very least, Microsoft has to be given points for trying something different."

Between the Lines: "Windows Vista has had some technical shortcomings and critics have not been kind. A good campaign will tackle that perception head-on. At the same time, Apple - which is now seeing its own black eyes over iPhone problems - has picked up slices of market share in recent quarters."

Engadget: "The combination of Seinfeld's pithy observations with a bit of that Bill Gates, self deprecating humor seen in 'Bill's Last Day' could be a winning combination. Whether that turns the slow moving boat of public opinion remains to be seen."

Digital Daily: "So Microsoft, in an effort to overhaul its image and upstage the cool kids down in Cupertino, seems to have done little but confirm the message of its rival’s ads: 'I’m a Mac, You’re a Dork,' or, in this case, a dated comedian. Really, the company might as well have hired Don Rickles for the job."

Disclosures: I don't own shares of any companies mentioned in this post. And while Microsoft owns this blog, Microsoft does not control, censor or otherwise have any editorial influence over what I write.

Sorry Mary- get over yourself!  YOu have no idea how much money  MSFT donates each year by matching the charitable donations of its employees!!! and that money does stay here in the USA!

I look forward to seeing Seinfeld in the ads---do you naysayers have a clue how many copies of the Seinfeld series on DVD were sold ? Any guess how much money Seinfeld's Bee movie made? He has a huge following!

The ads are for entertainment-we all know who makes the better product!

Love it, and yeh come on apple heads, If you really want to get anything done it is Microsoft and oh by the way how many Microsoft apps you have,. And one more thing How much did your last apple cost:)?

So, from a technician's standpoint, Vista is MORE user friendly when things go haywire - and machines running Windows are 30% to 60% less expensive than their Apple counterparts, and software is actually available through normal retail channels (IE Staples) for Windows... What makes Mac "cool?" I forgot. Mac lost it's graphics advantage n the late 90's. MacOS is based upo BSD Linux, one of the least user friendly Linux builds ever... Oh, right, the machines look sexy. Right. C'mon people, get on board! GoogleOS is the next big thing, get AFTER it!!!

It will take a lot more than Seinfeld to help Vista! Try makeing a better platform, and they will come. Oh ya Apple did that.

Which actors promote the products is truly irrelevant...The actor for the MAC commercials (Justin Long) actually owns 2 Dell laptops...there are photos all over the web proving his true preference.  And Jerry Seinfeld has been known to use his visa card, even though he promoted American Express in the past.  What does it matter!

Oh, please, guys - and gals.  Who cares about being 'hip'? If 'hip' equates to 'young' of Gen-Y or whatever, which making fun of Jerry Seinfeld as a pitchman assumes that it does, MicroSoft is pitching its product to the 50% (or soon to be) of the American population over 50 years old.  THEY control 80% of the economic wealth in the country, and THEY, still, control most of who buys what kind of computer.  The 'young' and 'hip' market may be flashy, but is, by far, the least economically powerful segment of the consumer economy and if MicroSoft manages to get the 'old foggies' on it's side, it's in clover.

Instead of using old comedians to tell us that Vista is actually good, Microsoft could try the novel approach of making sure it actually is good.

We have both at home. The wife uses Mac in her job. I use Windows in mine. She just bought a MacBook Pro. I just bought a new laptop also. Mine is more powerful than hers at half the price. Hers was a pain to add a networked printer. Mac has/had it's place. It's just a limited place. Heck, they Pixar doesn't even use a Mac to render the movies.  I just LOVE the way that people believe everything that they say in these stupid Mac commercials. There are a bunch of lies in them. Microsoft ought to address those issues while they're at it. The Mac commercials remind me of the circus. I keep hearing "You can fool some of the people......."

COOL!!

Go Seinfeld!

If its SEINFELD, then it is Cool and I gotta HAVE it

Way to go Jerry!

Always Hip,

Always With it!

Cooler than Cool.

About 90% of my friends who use a Mac have Windows running in their machines; none of my friends who use Windows need a Mac also.
