Sign of the times: Restaurants going bankrupt

Confirming a trend we discussed last week, the corporate parent of Bennigan's and Steak & Ale restaurants filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection as consumers continue to shy away from dining establishments in favor of home-cooked meals.

The closures affect only 0.5% of the U.S. bar-and-grill sector -- but they're a warning of tough times ahead for the $43 billion casual dining industry.

The rapid plunge into oblivion shocked patron Donna Wimes, who noted that "the food was good; they always seemed to generate a crowd." Others are reminiscing about Bennigan's deep-fried mozzarella sticks, while also noting that locations "looked full" anytime they passed by.

But of course, the financial health of a restaurant is determined by much more than customer traffic. In early June, the Wall Street Journal reported the company was in talks with its lenders, GE Capital Solutions, "in an effort to stave off a possible bankruptcy filing." Unfortunately, a toxic combination of rising food and labor costs, declining pricing power, and massive leverage continued, ultimately leading to the demise of the popular restaurants.

The restaurants are owned, through a subsidiary, by the Metromedia Restaurant Group, part of the Metromedia conglomerate founded by 93-year-old billionaire John Kluge. While independently owned franchise locations remain open -- representing roughly 50% of the total footprint -- some 300 company-owned locations across the country have been permanently shuttered. Any assets of value will be liquidated to settle outstanding debts. The fate of the brands, and the franchised locations, remains uncertain.

(Disclosure: I don’t own shares in any of the companies mentioned)

Bennigan's & Steak & Ale open up next store to each other here in Jersey..Six month's later they were both gone.Ground Round  ( Jousha Huddies ) was one of the better fast food resturants & they sold out,but the new owners are jambed every night..Almost the same menu & same great prices--and great wait staff...Now we here , they sold out to Hollihans--sad if true

Maybe bennigans can give ge capital some beer and hamburgers or ribs and potatoes dinners as a settlement in bankruptcy court?

I worked at bennigans, and i lost my job of 12 years.  They gave us no warning whatsoever.  Both me and my coworkers are all devestated.  We literally went into work, were setting up for the day, and received a call telling us to lock the doors.

WHERE IS BUTTERS GOING TO GET HIS MOZZARELLA STICKS NOW!!!!!

I WAS SHOCKED TO HEAR THE THE BENNIGAN'S IN MY AREA WAS CLOSED. IT WAS ALWAYS A TREAT, FOOD WAS GOOD, EMPLOYEES ALWAYS HAD A SMILE AND SERVICE ALWAYS GREAT THEY HAD A WONDERFUL TEAM EFFORT. IT IS A TERRIBLE SHAME CORPORATE TREATED THEIR EMPLOYESS THE WAY THEYDID, LOCK THE DOORS SEE YA LATER!! I WILL SURELY MISS BENNIGAN'S AND I CAN ONLY HOPE GOOD THINGS WILL COME FOR ALL THE GOOD HARD WORKING EMPLOYEES. I AM A FIRM BELEIVER OF: "THINGS HAPPEN FOR A REASON"

ed19446 I agree with you 100%. There is no longet a middle class America. You have your rich and your poor. Middle class America kept this country going. Lets all hold on and see what happens.

The whole reason this all happened is because of BAD management from the owners. If companies would be allowed to do what they know how to do without meddling, unreasonable owners who constantly drove away many top executives and made the work environment untolerable, maybe this company would have had a chance. Bennigan's is a viable brand, with lots of signature menu items and great employees. Thanks for abandoning the ship. RIP baby. We all love you.

I think Joe's Crab Shack is far worse they are right there with Chili's and Applebees as there servers look horrible and talkabout forgetting to wait on you and the over charge, there managers are less than profeesional; when it takes 45 minutes for food to come out,and most all the time you asked to speak to a manager ,there is not a manager you get a supervisor, i visited both the Chesapeake and Norfolk location and asked to speak to a manager at Norfolk they were aitting at a booth, a month later my office decided to go to Chesapeake we sat for 20 min. before a server approached 45 min. for food asked for a manager supervisor came to the table. You try to get a hold of their corporate office then the General Manager calls you back and again very unproffesional

Haven't been to Benningans in a long time. In fact the last time I got sick. I have a condo in Fort. Meyers and visited the STEAK nad ALe there and the prices were no bargin and the resturant was run down with dirty rugs and torn chairs. Why would I go back? There are too many good clean resturants for the same money.

p.s. Olive Garden in Fort Meyers is not one of them.

will the employees get there pay or will they have to wait or not get paid at all since they filied chapter 7?
