Teens and cell phones: a saturated market

Talk about a saturated market: 91% of 17-year-old girls had cell phones last year. That compares to 78% of 17-year-old boys, according to a research study mentioned in the New York Times

The teen segment is hugely important to cell phone companies, but the study's author says growth is going to slow simply because 100% penetration isn't realistic. That could be problematic for companies zeroed in on this market.

Educational company LeapFrog gets 'em young with a phone called the TicTalk that lets parents control which numbers are called and when the phone can ring. By age 13, 57% of teens had cell phones, according to the study.

Saturation creeps in during the older years, and cell phone companies are fighting this by turning to a still-unexplored area for teens: the smartphone. Only about 20% of teens own a smartphone like Apple's iPhone, according to News.com, but the industry is betting on fast growth among the age group. More teens want an iPhone than a new car, according to a study out last year.

While mobile carriers are trying hard to lure teens with music, games and video features, experts say tech giants like Apple and Google will have more success at "side-loading" applications into cell phones.

My son has had a cell phone avaiible to him for him since he was 10, now 13. This was in case of an emergency while he was out playing or for me to reach him since he and his friends were at different locations hanging out throughout the day. He did need itone day when he was riding his bike in the neighborhood and was attacked by a dog. Not seriously injured thank goodness, and there was no one around to help so he called me. I feel as long as there is a cicumstance where a cell phone could be used as a safety device, a child should carry one. Especially when there are so many things that could happen to a child. Of course texting isn't neccessary.

I agree that kids and teens really do not need to have cell phones, and shame on the parents who purchase these for them. All of us adults got through life perfectly well with no cell phone. And if public schools do not require cell phones be turned off that is ridiculous. My 15 year old daughter will not be getting a phone until she gets her license, and only a prepaid phone to use in an emergency only. She agrees that kids spend entirely too much time texting, which by the way promotes poor spelling.

It may be a saturated market but teens always break their phones and need new ones or want the newest and latest.....

I can't help but wonder if adolescent traffic deaths have increased as cell phone useage has accelarated. If anyone knows, please indicate.

I am glad my children have cell phones, they are not old enough to drive (13&15), have different interests, and are at different places. One plays sports, one does not but takes extra classes to excell in school. They have different pickup times or can sometimes get a ride home with another parent, I am divorced and am the one doing it all and sometimes appreciate another parents help but I want to know what, when and where my child is at and what they are doing. They borrowed other peoples cell phones for a while, but I can't depend on the fact they would have one when needed.

i need girls msn

Well im 13 an i have a cell phone. Everyone has one so why dont you guys jus stop complaining your not changing any other adults reason to give them a cell phone, god.

CHILDREN SHOULD BE CHILDREN AND GET BACK TO READING BOOKS-THEIR SPELLING AND GRAMMAR IS HORRIFYING!

Hey, that`s a really good article. I think giving a child a cell phone is a smart idea. I mean you have to explain to them this is not only to keep closer with your friends but also has other benefits like security. I think your users find an article I wrote useful, it`s about Cell Phones for children and their busy parents. Thanks and keep up the good work!
