Starbucks: Real estate savvy gone bad

There are some street corners in America where you can stand and see two, even three, Starbucks stores competing for your business. It was obvious that that kind of saturation wouldn't last. Starbucks has named the 600 stores it plans to close, and some customers are taking the news particularly hard. You can see the full list of closures by clicking here.

Investors seemed indifferent to the news, and Starbucks shares dropped by less than 1% to close at $14.34. (The stock has dropped 45% in the past year.) That's because the specific list of locations isn't that important. Investors are paying more attention to how the closures fit into Starbucks' larger plan to improve its financials and its share price.

The closures are clear evidence that Starbucks made some sloppy real estate decisions. Why would you open one store a mile away from an existing location? Sure, those stores may have been bustling with business at the time, but as soon as the economy wilted people came to their senses about $5 lattes.

Starbucks had talked about opening 1,000 stores in Florida, for example, by the end of the decade, according to the New York Times. On that fast-tracked schedule, the company had to drop some of its selection standards for new sites. The result? Sixty Florida locations are now slated to close.

Even last year, when an economic slowdown was apparent to just about everyone, Starbucks continued its breakneck pace and opened three new stores a day. Next year, it plans just 200 total. I'll bet each of those 200 locations gets thoroughly vetted.

Starbucks made some arrogant real estate decisions that ultimately left it overextended as gas prices rose, as mortgages flopped and as bare necessities became harder to afford. Closing stores is an important step in turning the company around, but it's just one step in a broad transformation.

The bigger challenge? Figuring out how to sell drinks that cost as much as a gallon of gas.

I used to PUT DOWN Starbucks all the time by saying that it was too expensive and to 'fru-fru' of a coffee. That was until I tried their peppermint mocha during the christmas holidays and I was hooked (this was 3 years ago)...and now I am a regular at MY Starbucks down the street...fortunately it is NOT closing (WHOO HOO!). Yes, I still agree it is expensive...but I can't live without my cinnamon dulce grande Starbucks doubleshot! I work in the emergency room, and that drink does its job and it is SO delicious! With the little that I spend, Starbucks is my little indulgence I can enjoy.

This stinks all the starbucks that around my home and office are closing.  Oh well quess  I drink Seatle Drip now.  Flowood, Pearl, Madison, Jackson, MS

Good, shut them all down and open up Peet's everywhere.  For you people that enjoy REAL coffee, you will love Peet's.

actually it isn't $5 a cup for the coffee. The coffee is pretty cheap. It's the espresso that is expensive. Also, studies have shown that a cup of coffee a day isn't bad for you. It's the full-fat frappuccinos that are bad for you.

I love starbucks, and i hate to see that they are closing some of them down. I shall miss my lovely venti caramel frapps when i am visiting valley hills mall, i dont want to drive 2mins away to barnes and noble...thats just torture cause ide already be at the mall...so this sucks majorly!!!!

This seems pretty normal the way the whole economy is going, the car industry is going the same way. I love Starbucks and they have to do what they have to do. I feel price was has nothing to do. Maybe some of the locations just aren't doing as well, so they are closing down the ones that aren't as profitable. Some people are saying they won't waste their money on a $5 coffee, but they will waste their money somewhere else instead. It's quality coffee. I would put my money there before Dunkin Donuts any day of the week. It's quality service and coffee I go for.

All I can say is WHOOPIE, Say NO TO STARBUCKS. I'm a huge mocha and frap person, but I choose Dutch Bros. coffee over starbucks anyday. Just the right price, top customer service and the drinks are just awesome!

Peronsally I think the customer service at starbucks here in OR just plain sucks! Not to mention they don't know what the hell they are doing, half the time you get the wrong drink that you ordered. So I'm all for this huge close.

Go Dutch!!

I'm not sad to hear about this news because I seldom go to Starbucks. The only time I do is because of a convenience factor if I'm in a hurry. I can't stand their coffee because I have to put a cup of cream and sugar just to make it tolerable.  In this economy who wants to pay $5 for a drink and pay for wifi when most other places offer it for free? No wonder they had to offer free wifi (with a catch). Everybody is looking to cut corners these days and people are going to cut out these luxuries first.

What's funny is that the Starbucks that was just opened six months ago, and across from a big mall is the only one closing in our area. I'd rather support my LOCAL coffee shop anyway.

I used to like Starbuck occassionally - when you could taste the rich espresso - but somewhere along the way it became watered down crap!  Weren't they already making billions??? That wasn't enough - they had to get greedy and water down their product.  I am glad they are going down.

I'm an ex employee and I seen this coming years ago. I've worked for sbux for 7years and only the first 3 of them were great. They lost all interest in customer service and the quality of there products, I'm glad the evil empire has fallen!
