3G iPhone rollout suffering glitches

Uh-oh. Apple's rollout of its highly-anticipated 3G iPhone is hitting some snags this morning. Looks like the "unknown error" message came out of its slumber in the seventh circle of hell and decided to wreak havoc on iPhone and iPod Touch owners. Here's the wording that they see when trying to sync the device in iTunes:

"We could not complete your iTunes store request. An unknown error occurred (-9838)."

I hate those number codes in error messages, because I know they mean something but have no idea what it is. Apple shares are down 2% to $172.66 this morning.

The general consensus is that Apple's activation servers have crashed -- a likely scenario (I think it happened last year?) and one that Apple should have been better prepared for. At News.com, Matt Asay bemoans the fact that he now has "a brick with no ability to call, no contacts, nothing."

IPod Touch owners are fuming trying to update their devices to the newest software. PCWorld details the problem.

The server issue is adding to frustration in lines at Apple and AT&T stores today. Darren Herman has pictures from a store in Soho, N.Y.

Gizmodo calls it the "iPocalypse," and says that AT&T is asking people to sync their new phones later at home. Shares of AT&T are down less than 1% today to $32.61. Reports of activation problems are coming in from Houston, New Jersey, Boston, Atlanta and even Canada.

Bloggers are understandably irate. "I find it astonishing that you have created an upgrade procedure that can fail in a way that leaves the phone useless," one writes to Apple on his blog. "You had 6+ months to prepare for this, so error messages like this are just inexcusable."

I'll update this post as I find out more details. Meanwhile, tell us your experiences with the iPhone and iPod Touch today. What are the lines like in stores? Are error messages driving you crazy?

Update: Several hours later, the activations seem to be up and running. Will everyone forget about this debacle by tomorrow, or has the drama cost Apple in the long term? Apple shares closed at $172.58, down about 2% from yesterday's close. By the way, the stumbles today didn't do anything for BlackBerry maker Research in Motion, whose shares declined more than 6% to $109.79.

Waited in line for 4 hours (7-11am) at an AT&T store in Durham, NC. I was #50 in line and they only received 40 phones!! This was the ONLY AT&T store selling i-phones within 30miles and they only had 40 to sell. Stupid. Then they were able to activate 1 phone every 15min + 4 customer service reps =16 customers every hour. When I finally got into the store to put my name on a list to receive a phone from the next shipment, the FIRST PERSON to enter the store at 800am was JUST ACTVATING their phone. I have to admit I've lost a lot of respect for APPLE and AT&T. Today was handled very poorly.

Go Canadian

Go Blackberry <3

i expect this kind off thing from sprint but not apple .... this really blows.

My business is SHUT DOWN FOR THE DAY since I use a cell phone like so many others as my business line. This is inexcusable to have happen, to completly render the phone useless like this. I did not purchase the new iPhone, this is also happening to customers who upgraded the software to 2.0 or should I say attempted to upgrade the software!!

I was planning to upgrade My iphone today but after I hooked up my old Iphone to do the software update and found that my phone did not work any more I have choosen to not buy a new Iphone after all

Thats what you people get for buying a new product the day it comes out.  You would think all you techie nerds would realize that the product will have bugs.  Stop complaining...you did it to yourselves!

if you take the new sim card from the 3g iphone it will work on any at&t phone or the old iphone as temp

so many rim users-losers! detracting the iphone and apple..... i have the same situation, this only means that there are millions of users trying to update or connect their phones, blackberry never had or will have this situation because they dont have the success as the iphone has!

i am going to wait until my iphone can update, i have my data back up so i have all my contacts in my computer..... you do back up your info???? i am happy with the iphone and apple rules!

sitting here typing  a comment on my sprint touch phone and watching my friend getting pissed because his new iphone dont work.

must be nice to have an iphone

Im sure Apple will get these problems fixed within a month or so... too bad for the suckers that always have to camp outside the store for the new product to come out...
