Americans losing interest in eBay

EBay is making big changes to its business these days -- but apparently it's not going over well with customers. According to a recent MSN-Zogby poll, only 31% of Americans plan to buy or sell anything on the auction site in the next year. That's down from 40% who said they bought or sold something on eBay in the last year.

There are two ways to look at this data. On one hand, one out of three Americans who go online still plan to use eBay next year. That's an incredible penetration rate, one that other retailers would love to have.

On the other hand, the numbers show that people are losing interest in eBay. If people stick by their answers, eBay could see a significant drop in U.S. business this coming year.

MSN commissioned Zogby International to survey 6,500 people about eBay and other topics. The eBay questions were chosen this year because the company has rolled out several controversial policy changes that outraged a vocal group of users -- mostly eBay sellers unhappy with new fee rates and feedback rules. The survey set out to gauge how the general online population felt about using eBay.

The biggest caveat here is that the poll asked people what they plan to do in the next year. And plans can change, particularly if someone needs to unload a record collection or buy that rare Beanie Baby. And we can't directly tie the loss of interest in eBay to its policy changes. People may be planning to spend less in general, an understandable sentiment in today's economy.

But what we can take from the survey is this: People aren't as enthusiastic about using eBay these days. And winning back a ho-hum audience is a tough job.

I believe the shoppers that like E-bay will continue to shop and buy multiple items. So its possible that the # of sales can go up even if the # of shoppers decline. Polls dont always tell the truth, you ask the wrong question, you get the wrong answer. Stupid is as stupid does. And Americans are not getting brighter.

The reason they changed feed back where sellers could not leave any for buyers is because when there was a legit reason a seller SHOULD get negative feed back they would automatically leave negative feed back for the buyer no matter what. Every single solitary time I left negative feed back for a legit reason where the seller refused to respond to emails to try and work things out etc.. I got negative feed back for giving them negative feed back. Ebay even looked at the evidence and agreed the seller should get negative feed back but there reason for not removing my negative retalitory feed back was a lame. If a buyer pays on time theres no reason to get negative feed back period. I still use ebay and always make sure I know shipping charges.. people who charge $20.00 or more to ship something that cost you .99 is just getting value for the item do research and you'll see most deals like that on ebay are still way cheaper than a store..

I am a seller on e-bay. I do all custom work. Everything is made to order. I have found that buyers don't read. If they did, they would understand the seller's policy. As far as feedback, why should a buyer's be good feedback if they don't pay etc. The seller is taking all the hits. E-Bay was a place where you could find bargins, now it is a palce that is very hard to deal with. Every time the fee's go up prices have to be raised and it will get to the point that a seller has to raise the prices to make a little profit which will force the little guys out. They rather have Power Seller's.  A bank does not charge me a fee to make a deposit from someone paying me. E-bay does not get the Postal system as well. I charge flat rate shipping and I get messages all the time that the shipping it to high. I will ask the post office to lower the postage because e-bay says so. Wish there was another came in town. Seems they have the market cornered so where else do you sell your stuff. With the amount of fee's I pay each month, a web site may be cheaper. Go figure. E-bay has the power if they want to control shipping fees. They just choose not to. They don't care who plays fair and who does not as long as they get their money.

It does not matter what the seller's say, E-Bay will NOT change their ways. Nothing ever goes down and the almighty dollar rules. Money talks. The seller's will not be able to win this one. Not the little guys anyway.

I am an ebay Powerseller and although I don't like the new formats and changes either, it is still a place to find hard to locate items and also to gauge pricing. I also use eBay for education purposes-you can find out a lot about a product if you research through the auctions.  I have sold 2 expensive cars in the last week on eBay that I could not sell in my local market. Both sold 5 days short of the auction ending! Most seller are mad because they can't gouge on the shipping anymore without being rated. The new system really cleaned up eBay in my opinion. Most of the sellers that are leaving needed to go anyway...

ebay became way to commercial, people go to auctions for cheap buys, the stores and crooks ruined it for ebay in my opinion.   ebay should never have allowed the stores to take over, limit people to so many items per week, but of course the greedy sob's let the site get flooded for there own profits sake! as if they didnt make enough money to get by as it is.

one other thing ebay ruined is the value of once hard to find and sought after items, collectibles ect.   not worth as much if you can get what ever you want anytime you want no matter the rarity, or age of an item.

craigs list is the new way, you deal with average people and you can trade , or whatever.  ebay is a fading star and they only have there self, the stores and the scum of the earth crooks to thank. see ya ebay , everyone has figured out that dealing on ebay is a risk not a pleasure.

Ebay does not protect the buyer Bob!

I stopped using Ebay years ago when a clown like yourself didn't send my product a month after the auction ended. I left negative feedback and the seller contacted me telling me to remove the negative feedback, or he would not ship my product.

I contacted Ebay and they told me there is nothing they can do, they are merely the middle man and do not have control over the situation.

When i did finally receive the 12.00 CD i had purchased, the seller had opened it up and purposely took the booklets, and scrathced the cd.

He even had the guts to send me an email telling me he had done so.

Maybe it was you Bob?

Way to go Ebay. Good Riddance! Hello Craigslist.

I buy and sell guitars on ebay and really its the only place to do that becauase you can see every kind of guitar you would ever want to but you have to know your market. Some sellers do have high shipping but I can tell you that to ship a 20-30 lbs guitar can cost anywhere bettween 25-120 so it hard to gauge what to price it at. Sometimes it less some more. If you sell something for a grand, the selling fees are at lest 30 and paypal is the same so your out 60 bucks + listing 5 ish so you would lose 65 bucks right of the bat. I like ebay for guitars there is nowhere you can see or buy as many guitar as you can on ebay. Other items I cant vouch for but I can see where some items would not be good on ebay. So you have to check your sellers and know what you want to buy. I dont even half read the description if the seller has taked good pics of the item, and his shipping fees are fair and its something I can afford. I can see where ebay has upset and for good reason its sellers, I am one, but really I still make money and you cant sell something like a used guitar at the stores anymore they dont even take trade ins. So ebay is the only outlet for my kind of interest.

As a member of EBAY for 7 years, My opinion, for what it is worth is this,  It used to be a fun place to buy neat things and sell off your stuff. Yes there were crummy people on there, but you knew to watch their feedback and such.  Now the crooks are hijacking peoples entire accounts, selling fake classic cars, our morons at the Post Office have jacked up shipping charges so much that a person pays more for shipping than they did for their widget, and that is NOT the sellers fault. And to top it off EBAY has turned into Big Brother with things like forcing the use of PAYPAL and all there stupid new rules which haven't done a thing to stop the crooks, just make it not fun anymore for us average folks.  I'll continue to buy and sell once in a while but nothing like I did at first because it just isn't worth it.

I am a small seller and buyer on Ebay and I have also noticed that there just arent as many items for sale on Ebay lately.   The Ebay fees to sell have gotten so expensive that most sellers try and pad the shipping and handling costs a little to try and make up a little.   Ebay needs to back down and get real that they are causing the lack in demand on Ebay by gouging and limiting sellers, which limits the products sold on Ebay which limits buyers on Ebay.

Too Bad!  It was a great idea at first that has gone bad now.

Shill bidding, private bidders, not being allowed to view who you're bidding against....excessive shipping charges, high prices for non-quality pieces, no support from Ebay, no way of contacting Ebay, philshing from everybody about your Ebay account - just too many problems and hassles....sellers who put ridiculous prices on items that are either fake, broken, repaired, fake, etc.....a good thing gone bad....shame.
